@@RichardNellAuthor this is my first year trying it out, and it's helping me so far. Who knows if I'll stick to it. I'm trying to tackle a number of big series (malazan, osten ard, banished lands, dresden, realm of the elderlings, suneater) and breaking them all into month by month seemed like it prove helpful. So far, I've read 15 books, or at least finished the ones I was partway thru (which I'm totally counting to my year end goal of 100 books) I've already read ahead in other series and not started others. Having a vague outline seems like it is helpful for me. I know others meticulously plan their reading out, but that's not me.

I just started First Law with The Blade Itself, about 200 pages into it right now. The part where a character throws his sword down intending for the blade to stick in the ground, only for it to topple over instead made me laugh so hard. "It was that sort of day." Abercrombie is very good at making little things like that hilarious, similar to Mark Lawrence. It's so English, I love it.

I find myself torn between loving and hating Joe Abercrombie for delivering such an entertaining yet heart-wrenching story. I devoured the first two books of The First Law series within a week, unable to stop. But when I reached Last Argument of Kings, I found myself slowing down, especially in the first half. My expectations-that things would improve, especially for Logan Ninefingers-were completely shattered. Instead, I was left in a state of utter devastation, realizing that the story would not turn out as I had hoped. Eventually, I even resorted to looking up the ending online, which led me to stop reading the book at about two and a half books into the series. Despite my frustration, I have to acknowledge that I’ve never encountered such unique and complex character development in any other series, except perhaps The Realm of the Elderlings. Superior Glokta stands out as the best character overall-his depth, internal struggles, and dark humor made him unforgettable. Thank you for recommending this series; even though it didn’t meet all my expectations, it was a worthwhile experience for the brilliant character work alone.

You're so welcome! I think your reaction toward the series is a fair one. I'm just more accepting of it. Hi Petrik! I am currently on the Royal Assassin (Book 2 of the Farseer Trilogy). I really love Fitz's POV and could read a hundred books just for his voice. I was curious, do you think it would be fine to skip the Rain Wilds series? From your reviews it seems this sub-series is quite bad, and from what else I've garnered of it it wouldn't really seem to interest me (I hate teenage romance stories tbh, especially if it's the main focus of a story).
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo Жыл бұрын
I recommend you to still try the first book of Rain Wild. Who knows, you might like it. The second book is the worst of the quartet, and I honestly think you don't need to read that. The rest are still okay. But imo, no, you don't have to read Rainwild Chronicles. Some key characters from Rainwild appeared in the final book, but not a big deal.

Just finished the series! Thoroughly enjoyed it although I have my gripes, I think they should make this series into a show. I think it’d be successful as a mafia gangster/fantasy show on HBO. I guess your right about WoT fans not liking Licanius. I thought it was a PALE imitation of much much better work myself. I haven't read the last book yet and I definitely didn't follow your recommendation that I read all 3 back to back to back so I might change my mind some whenever I get around to reading that last book. But to be honest I keep putting it off. It took me forever to power through the first two. The characters were ok and the plot was actually pretty good; I feel like I should have liked it more. If I hadn't have felt that so much was lifted straight from WoT I think I would have liked it more. As it was I kept comparing the two and WoT did everything so much better.
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo Жыл бұрын
That's the thing. I've read 7 books in The Wheel of Time and although I enjoyed it, especially Fires of Heaven and Lord of Chaos, but I still think The Licanius trilogy is still better than the series. Tons better. Again, this is differing opinions, though. As I said, it seems like those who absolutely love Wheel of Time hate the series. xD

@@PetrikLeo I didn't hate it. But it was mediocre at best. It took too much from WoT and didn't do any of those things nearly as well in my opinion. As you said it's a difference of opinion; but for me WoT is hands down better in every way. WoT us my #1 all time favorite and Licanius wouldn't even rank in the top 15. Probably top 25. Might change when I read that last book and I will since I bought the whole trilogy already. But it will probably be next year before I get around to it.

The last chapters of Jade Legacy were so good. SPOILERS BELOW! One of my most DESPISED tropes is when a character goes through a story killing left and right, then allows their arch nemesis to live at the end because “it wouldn’t be what *dead character* wanted” or “I’d be just as evil as you!”. I think it started when I read The Chronicles of Vladimir Todd, a YA series about a teenage boy vampire, where his enemy throughout is an older, violent and DESPICABLE vampire. After finding out his history with Todd’s dad, Todd gets a a chance to kill him in the third book, avenging everyone he’s lost and more importantly, SAVING those still alive from future harm, but despite this perfect opportunity and being encouraged by his mentor to take him out, he lets the evil vampire go because he was close with his dad at one point (when he was good) and because killing him isn’t the way. Words can’t describe how much I hate this trope, but in Jade Legacy, there actually GREAT reasons for the main characters not killing their life long enemies, and I really appreciate Lee for this.
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo Жыл бұрын
HEAR HEAR, Jorden! That's one of my most despised tropes, too. It almost felt like a way to just prolong the conflict as much as possible. It happened recently in Echoes Saga, and it dropped the series from entering the top 15 list for me even though I still enjoyed it. :)
