There are two values. The value at home and the value when you have to exchange or buy outside the country. The first one has to do with business cost. If the business cost goes up than prices go up. The second has to do with how it compares to the other currency. So our currency is fairly good against 95% of the outside currencies. So our buying power is stronger than the other countries.

There is no replacement. If the USD ends, so does the entire global economy system and most global trade. Globalization is only possible due to the US controlling the trading lanes and ensuring free trade. If the US wanted to, it could blockade the Strait of Hormuz, Red Sea, and strait of Malacca and strangle the entire global oil trade and there isn't a single country or collection of countries on Earth that could stop it.

I thought the agreement dated to the Establishment of the Oil Company Saudi ARAMCO in 1941, and Saudi drilling even earlier, which would be Franklin Roosevelt and American Oil companies. The Petro-Dollar being an unwritten handshake agreement, maintained in the same way! As long as the dollar was strong, it worked well for both countries, but now, with the US 34 Trillion in debt and printing, gold, Bitcoin, wheat, copper, land, anything might be better for Saudi Arabia than dollars, but it doesn't pay to harm your biggest customer so the Saudi's will dump the dollar slowly.

If we're backed to gold standard, then economy can only grow if you can increase the supply of your gold. This is unsustainable. It also makes it very hard to implement monetary policies in times of stress. For example, it'll be hard for feds to stop bail out the banks and stop the bank run (Great Depression). It'd be hard to stimulate the economy using monetary policy.

People blame politicians for their reckless spending. However, people should blame themselves for putting those politicians in the office. Any politicians who runs on getting our debt under control will not get enough votes to win because taxes need to be raised or spending needs to be cut. Politicians who want to cut taxes or hand out free money are the ones most likely to win which puts us farther into debt.
