The cost of those comprehensive long range fast charge conversion is too insane to mention. In the area of a new EV like a Tesla. But the huge advantage is that it is build for your needs and desires and very importantly: You own the design. Repairs and upgrades are easily and cheaply done.

It's good to hear that cobalt is coming out of battery technology. It's not really the case that many people "wave the banner" on cobalt are doing that to rile against the electric car industry and ignore others such as mobile phones, though, as you appear to be hinting at here. Surely it's simply that if all people in the UK who have cars now want to have electric cars in the future, the total quantity of cobalt required would be simply /massive/ whilst that required for mobile phones would remain relatively insignificant against that. We have the luxury of not being the ones who live next to the cobalt mines, nor the mines for rare earth metals used in many technologies too. All of these things are, conveniently mined thousands of miles away from us and it's quite right that people flag this up. Most of us are blind to the damage done. So, it's a great relief to hear that reliance on at least one of the 'nasties' is being massively reduced in EV technology.

Brilliant explanation, alot of people are scared of range when it comes to EV cars, but what people must understand like any technology it only gets better over time. And I wont be surprised in 10 years time a EV will do over 1000 km on a single charge. And charge full in under 10min.

I think is really important to add / extract engine efficiency in your equation. Even petrol has the highest energy density, using it in the ice engine drops that efficiency accordingly to the engine efficiency. The irony is If all cars were scrapped at 20k miles petrol would be greener. Note, the numbers above may not be perfectly correct but they're not that far off. Many years ago I was walking down an old back lane near Blunsdon, Swindon with my girlfriend, when I spotted a MKIIA long wheelbase Land Rover languishing in an old wooden shed. A couple of enquiries later I’d bought it and proceeded to rebuild the engine, which was in bits. I then went on to strip the gearbox and rebuilt it with salvaged parts; rewired the electrics; fitted some custom electronics; added side windows a Fairey overdrive and reconditioned the front wheel hubs, UJ’s and topped it off with free-wheeling front hubs and an economy carburettor. A great first barn-find rebuild. I can remember lifting out the gearbox by straddling the centre chassis members and lifting it out using the web seatbelt’s strapped over my shoulders. Back then I was as strong as an Ox and could pull off a stunt like that. Best time of my life. That’s what I like the most about your show. You give it a go and nothing much will stop you. 7 hours ago a Dutch commercial radio station started a discussion about this exact subject, so your video came in as very handy as reference material so that I could discuss several frivolous arguments that were used by several people who joined the conversation with their comments. And I shared a link to this video as well 👍 And yes, cobalt was one of their arguments. When it comes to renewable energy and electric cars people always bring up arguments that weren't a problem when the same materials were used for something else. Take for example composite materials. It is not a problem when it is used for boats and cars, but when it is used for wind turbine blades it all the sudden becomes a problem for those people. Luckily a Dutch company solved that problem too, because they can recycle composite materials so that they can produce 100% recyclable tiles with it. But it is another example of a frivolous argument against renewable energy and technology. Thank you for your excellent work !!👍✌ (P.S. made a small typo so I fixed my error after reading it a few days later)

@@bertilhatt Another striking example of the double moral, the lack of knowledge, and/or the hypocrisy from people who actually do know better. It is a big reason why I love this channel and the work from the people from Electric Classic cars so much. Honest information is a rarity these days. And since it is a 100% commercial operation people can't use the so called "government subsidies" argument and their usual conspiracy theories either. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, I think that is exactly how we can make steps forward as a society.
@svenvanwesterloo173

I think that to those people it doesn't feel like an improvement when your still mining finite minerals and resources for a green alternative. I'm struggling with that as well. When you say cobalt is being used to refine petrol, it feels strange to be very enthusiastic about is when it's being used for a zero emission alternative. The mining remains, the exploitation remains, the resource does not remain as it's a finite one which makes it feel like a temporary solution and more of the same as with for instance the fossil fuel industry. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against electrical cars but a lot of things are happily forgotten when we're talking about zero emission solutions. They're mostly zero emission and/or green when actually in use, not yet in production or when their commercial life has ended. Fortunately developments are quick, and I'm confident that there will be solutions for all those problems.

Thats the principle behind most skate board chassis designs. In something like an e type swap the rear axel for the Tesla set up...and put the batteries and gubbins where the old straight six bell housing and gearbox all went.. which way more than the rest of the body assembly. They are seriously heavy engines....let alone the V 12 versions.

Great presentation! How does a w201 Mercedes look as a potential conversion candidate. Curb weight was around 1200 kg. They are numerous still, handle great and well built. Drag coefficient was very low for the time. I love mine but feel guilty about the diesel.

Really enjoying these tech videos. Would be interesting to see how you solve issues around heating/cooling cabin, brake servo, power steering, auxiliary power etc. that would have come off feeds from an engine in the past.

electric or take heat from battery, electric assist for brake and steering (as on a lot of current ice vehicles).

What a great video! Just discovered your channel and I'm thrilled, really good stuff. You can tell that you thoroughly know what you are talking about but your are not using complex details to impress the audience, keeping it to essentials to get the message across, very good approach, much appreciated.

You are such a good teacher, Richard. Can't wait to see the mystery car. My guess is, (oh, gawd, I'm probably miles out), a Renault 4.

I am very curious about hub motors. Super nice to eliminate a lot of components, but I understand the unsprung weight penalty. Does seem like an easier conversion option.

Brilliant video. I would really like to see more detail on the comparison between electric & petrol/diesel in terms of overall weight vs power output

23:43 you forgot about regen. this is the reason EVs work or makes sense, especially in the city or stop and go traffic. this is also the reason why more luxury EVs keeps getting heavier with little consequence, except for faster tire wear

Can you cover DC fast charging with EV conversions? It seems like most conversions only have level 2 charging capabilities

Look forward to how the DC gets converted to AC, and how controlled. ie , more info on the Inverters, how they are rated and paired to the Battery Pack and Motor. Thanx, and keep up the great presentations.

Would also be interested in the battery pack unit you had on the floor next to the 20ltr Jerry can. Can these be sourced second hand and what kind of cost would be involved ??

Q&A ev conversions seem to mostly retain original gearbox, are there other options for a cleaner look inside?

Hello, thank you very much for the very detailed explanation of the different battery types. Your videos are very entertaining and inspiring. I am already looking forward to the next topic. Recently, I talked to a friend about transmissions in an electrical conversion. When would you use the original gearbox and when would you not? Does it make sense, for example, to continue using the automatic transmission in a Mercedes SL?
