It's good to hear that cobalt is coming out of battery technology. It's not really the case that many people "wave the banner" on cobalt are doing that to rile against the electric car industry and ignore others such as mobile phones, though, as you appear to be hinting at here. Surely it's simply that if all people in the UK who have cars now want to have electric cars in the future, the total quantity of cobalt required would be simply /massive/ whilst that required for mobile phones would remain relatively insignificant against that. We have the luxury of not being the ones who live next to the cobalt mines, nor the mines for rare earth metals used in many technologies too. All of these things are, conveniently mined thousands of miles away from us and it's quite right that people flag this up. Most of us are blind to the damage done. So, it's a great relief to hear that reliance on at least one of the 'nasties' is being massively reduced in EV technology.

Brilliant explanation, alot of people are scared of range when it comes to EV cars, but what people must understand like any technology it only gets better over time. And I wont be surprised in 10 years time a EV will do over 1000 km on a single charge. And charge full in under 10min.

Many years ago I was walking down an old back lane near Blunsdon, Swindon with my girlfriend, when I spotted a MKIIA long wheelbase Land Rover languishing in an old wooden shed. A couple of enquiries later I’d bought it and proceeded to rebuild the engine, which was in bits. I then went on to strip the gearbox and rebuilt it with salvaged parts; rewired the electrics; fitted some custom electronics; added side windows a Fairey overdrive and reconditioned the front wheel hubs, UJ’s and topped it off with free-wheeling front hubs and an economy carburettor. A great first barn-find rebuild. I can remember lifting out the gearbox by straddling the centre chassis members and lifting it out using the web seatbelt’s strapped over my shoulders. Back then I was as strong as an Ox and could pull off a stunt like that. Best time of my life. That’s what I like the most about your show. You give it a go and nothing much will stop you. 7 hours ago a Dutch commercial radio station started a discussion about this exact subject, so your video came in as very handy as reference material so that I could discuss several frivolous arguments that were used by several people who joined the conversation with their comments. And I shared a link to this video as well 👍 And yes, cobalt was one of their arguments. When it comes to renewable energy and electric cars people always bring up arguments that weren't a problem when the same materials were used for something else. Take for example composite materials. It is not a problem when it is used for boats and cars, but when it is used for wind turbine blades it all the sudden becomes a problem for those people. Luckily a Dutch company solved that problem too, because they can recycle composite materials so that they can produce 100% recyclable tiles with it. But it is another example of a frivolous argument against renewable energy and technology. Thank you for your excellent work !!👍✌ (P.S. made a small typo so I fixed my error after reading it a few days later)

@@bertilhatt Another striking example of the double moral, the lack of knowledge, and/or the hypocrisy from people who actually do know better. It is a big reason why I love this channel and the work from the people from Electric Classic cars so much. Honest information is a rarity these days. And since it is a 100% commercial operation people can't use the so called "government subsidies" argument and their usual conspiracy theories either. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, I think that is exactly how we can make steps forward as a society.
@svenvanwesterloo1732 жыл бұрын
I think that to those people it doesn't feel like an improvement when your still mining finite minerals and resources for a green alternative. I'm struggling with that as well. When you say cobalt is being used to refine petrol, it feels strange to be very enthusiastic about is when it's being used for a zero emission alternative. The mining remains, the exploitation remains, the resource does not remain as it's a finite one which makes it feel like a temporary solution and more of the same as with for instance the fossil fuel industry. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against electrical cars but a lot of things are happily forgotten when we're talking about zero emission solutions. They're mostly zero emission and/or green when actually in use, not yet in production or when their commercial life has ended. Fortunately developments are quick, and I'm confident that there will be solutions for all those problems.
