It does amaze me that we got this theft issue sorted in the late 90's / early 2000's with keys that have a chip embedded. And then for very little extra convenience we regressed straight back to the 1980's when a kid with a teaspoon could steal your car in 45 seconds.

I have the previous gen( not sure about current) the first thing I did was turn off the keyless entry. Pressing the buttons on the gob in a sequence tells car and key not to do so. Its a simple thing, pressing a button to unlock your car. Also - l494 that I have put 54k miles on over 3yrs.now at 95k. In that time I have had one issue car went into limp home mode due to a turbo sensor £10 fix. Lots of people buy these cars and skimp on servicing / maintenance. I change oil earlier than JLR say. I have changed gearbox oil 2x. Prevention servicing through a good independent.

Personally insurance has not been a problem. I love them.😊

Thank you Peds for another first class video. I own a 2023 Range Rover Sport d350, Insurance for me is at an acceptable level. When you buy new you have a free Tracker for 12 months, however at the time of building you can opt for a 3 year upgrade. I can't recall the cost but it was cheap enough and represented a huge saving over annual upgrades. My point is: 1. Your insurance quote will be considerably cheaper with tracker. 2. If buying second hand try and find one with remainder of the 3 year tracker package.

I had a vouge SE 4.6 did 9 mpg. Yes it was the best car I have owned 5:21 and made me feel like king of the road, but I got to know every RAC recovery bloke. I couldn’t use it for long trips , due to its unreliability, I was putting my family at risk. In the end it was a money pit - no matter how much I spent there was always something that needed more money. In the end I felt like the thing had taken me hostage- no amount of silky smooth and effortless waffling could disguise it’s unreliable to the point of being dangerous if you have a young family.

Don’t forget that JLR’s atrocious supply chain management - and the resulting critical parts shortages - have significantly contributed to theft rates (spare parts are in huge demand) and thus insurance premiums. I think JLR have been lulled into a false sense of security over the past decade; their products are so desirable that buyers were willing to overlook iffy quality control and reliability so there was little incentive to tackle these problems….but customers being literally unable to insure their cars might make management wake up. Some people will jump ship to other brands and never come back

The issue is as soon as the thieves know which areas are hotspots (as in where these updates are being concentrated on) they will just move to the next area. Land Rover/RR are also refusing insurance to owners. The situation is serious and hope it gets on too of. The other issue is for the OCG is selling the cars on and the lack of police action. We all know how much the police forces have been cut. Also sentencing is so lenient that it makes it worth it for the thieves.

But to be honest if you look after them properly they will look after you and be a fairly reliable car for what it is. I think it’s one of those special cars if you get it you will love it and miss it and dose become part of the family. But if you don’t get it or cheap out or don’t maintain it you will hate it. Really enjoyable and informative review as always. Picking up on the comment below, do we really need keyless entry systems? Surely the lock/unlock plipper key that you slot into a receptor slot to start the car would get round the problem of cloning. It would also avoid inadvertently leaving the key in the car - or am I missing something?

I would like to get a four door Classic Rangerover at some point, and by changing the bushes, A frame, fuel pump ect, create a good driver. For the current model they should create an option without keyless entry if that would satisfy the insurance industry.

The RangeRover has always been the top of the tree when it comes to a luxury car that can do it all, whether arriving in style at the Ritz or driving across your country estate, if you can afford one there’s nothing better to drive in consummate luxury and style and, although I haven’t owned one for some years now, I still have fond memories of the pleasure of driving it. However,…. if JLR can’t sort out the insurance/theft issue then they will be losing customers in massive numbers. If you’re about to purchase or order one and then hear of owners being either refused cover or being quoted ridiculously high premiums, you are going to start looking elsewhere. Reliability is another matter but, in fairness any large complex car by any manufacturer is going to be expensive to run and have potential for issues. What is important is to provide excellent customer service if that happens and prompt rectification of any faults. Unfortunately the general opinion seems to be that currently JLR are failing in this as well which is surely a failure of senior management?

Hey Ped! Greetings from Vancouver Island, BC Canada…. As you state all OEMs of luxury vehicles suffer from theft from organized crime gangs. I work for a General Motors retailer have done for nearly 20 years now. When GM issued the new C8 Corvette they changed the fob to a “sleeping Fob” so if the fob is in your pocket/bag and not being used the fob shuts down and stops transmissions of the data needed to clone it. When you press the button the fob stays active for up to 30 seconds, then shuts down again…. Downside, well there is a delay from pressing the button to the command happening, but that’s a small price to pay if it means your pride and joy is still in your garage! These fobs are now being rolled out to other GM product.

You can, of course, turn off the keyless entry if that's the main problem, I've turned mine off. There are videos on here that show you how to do that, you can hide smart tags, or air tags also to help find it if it is stolen and use other security like stirring locks or pedal locks. I know that that seems a bit inconvenient but i'd rather keep it than loose it.

On the subject of large wheels, my older (l405) car has twenty-inch wheels. I recently swapped the space-saver spare for a full sized wheel after a puncture a long way from home. I turned seventy last year, and am average size and still reasonably healthy, but hoicking the spare out of the boot well is absolutely at my limit of lifting, especially considering that you have to do the lift at arm's length across the lower tailgate. I doubt I could manage a bigger wheel now, never mind in five years' time.

I got into the 2014 Range Rover Vogue SE 3.0 diesel about 2 years ago and that’s one of the best decisions I made. Before I got the car there’s this perception about RR being unreliable but it’s not the case with me, im now at about 140k and the car still drives like new, never stopped anywhere, always start. The way the car drives is so impressive like there’s nothing out there that can give you everything you look for in different cars in one package. My dad has a 2016 Land Cruiser 200 series and trust me it doesn’t drive as good as the RR and before getting into the RR I could have sworn that the LC is the best off roader. Had a 1984 RR Vogue, I think you have to drive them to see the appeal. The steering was light as a feather but a pain as had to keep constantly correcting. I did have Poly bushes on mine so could throw it around a bit. It was actually the longest I'd owned a car but broke me. I had a problem with the cam followers on mine but fixed it. The fuel consumption was 12MPG round town or 26MPG on a long run but I could get better fuel consumption when off-roading because mostly it was jus idling and did not need a lot of revs. Bonus was it was the carb 3.5 V8 version and could mend it with a set of spanners and screwdrivers, no computers 🙂

An anecdote worth quoting concerns a Land Rover Defender. Said vehicle was bought secondhand as an accident repair. However, the new owner had difficulty in determining which corner of the vehicle had been damaged, largely due to the extremely poor original build quality. Because some of the parts used were non-standard it was finally realised that the vehicle had been stolen and partly stripped before it was recovered. Then due to a dearth of original parts available, it was rebuilt with whatever was available, including a third row of seats.

When I started driving in the mid 1960's most of the insurance quotes were based around 10% of the cars value, such was the premium for a new driver. Now as a greyhair my insurance premiums are starting to increase, due to perceived risk by Insurance companies. I wonder if much of the 'noise' from the media is down to selective reporting of a few people who are basically uninsurable!

I was in a market for one as my wife and myself too like them. Had a hire car a few times. But I just had no trust and maybe no courage to buy one. As you admit it at the end of the video that the reliability is a real issue and topping all the unreliability car surveys. Also had close friends and even my direct manager having multiple issues and problems with it. But they are like biased towards the Range Rover like many British people are, and they don't want to admit or even realise that they car is more at the dealer then at home. I needed a car for a long journeys and do a lot of cross Europe trips so I needed a reliable car. And I had no other car (or two in a garage) which I would be able to use while my Range Rover is (again) at the dealers for (trying to fix a leaking panoramic sunroof, central locking not working etc.) So I decided to go with a safer option and bought a German SUV and done 40k in the UK and In Europe without any issues for the 3 years I had it. This is what Land Rover needs to achieve, being reliable at least in the first few years of the cars lifetime, but they still failing with that unfortunately. And I was very relived that I didn't go with a Range Rover when the theft scandal came out as my insurance would have sky rocketed and also would be in such a negative equity on the PCP that my outstanding balance would be triple what the cars market value would be.

Hi Ped Fair and balanced overview. Range Rover should be a Top Brand. The product in so many ways is excellent, and world class, But let down by reliability and quality issues that should have been sorted years ago. Also management should have seen the insurance issue which has been creeping up on the brand for a considerable time, and whilst major sums have now been spent, the financial hit to their reputation and sales I bet has been even greater. Also greater attention to the dealer network would be a worthwhile move.

This latest RR is head and shoulders above all past models, fantastic driving, completely luxurious, and not too flashy. My insurance on my 2018 autobiography was £800 , this latest RR was difficult to find insurance in March 2023 and painful at £2400, I’m dreading my renewal. Will I have to sell this beautiful car? I tried JLR insurance in November and they refused to quote. In my opinion JLR should guarantee everyone if they believe in their security. I’ve turned off the keyless function, I use a steering wheel lock, I rarely park it anywhere I don’t know and use the security app . Come on insurance companies, very few of the latest models are getting stolen, look again at normalising the premiums.

@@eastwood978a friend told me that JLR do not accept the Ghost security system and it therefore invalidates the manufacturer’s warranty! Would be interested to know if this is in fact true or not.

Get one of those locks, which lock the steering wheel to be of the pedals , and faraday pouch your key .

According to the Land Rover security people, all the LR keys from 2018 are now using Ultra wide band so are now immune to the relay theft /code capture.

It also causes knock on effects to older Range Rover models with Insurance companies taking the **** and charging a lot more for the ones that are not getting stolen under the excuse of it being a Range Rover.

Hi I have been looking to buy a 6 month old Defender or Range Rover D300 MHEV to replace by C8 RS6 (superb vehicle but too powerful for every day use). Obviously, insurance will always be an issue with any performance vehicle but with LR thefts postcode is paramount. For example, with a Kent postcode my current 3 year fixed deal for the RS6 with S5 monitored tracker £955. Defender £745 and Range Rover £1450 all with £500 excess, 10000 miles and social only. Overall, the Defender is the most suitable vehicle but as finished with purchasing new vehicles finding the right options is problematic and still looking after 4 months. Great content.

When I had a velar I turned the keyless entry off, for me the keyless entry is just lazy.

An amazing car. I've never driven one but I'm sure they are great. Fantastic review Pedro. The car security does seem a bit of an own goal though. Surely if it is a risk they need to change the technology. Like a key and a lock!

Sorry, but I had a SDV8 Autobiography, and it was a nightmare from beginning to end. To many issues to list, and the LR dealer was the worst.

I'd love one But as you say theft and insurance and not forgetting reliability and the fact any engine work normally results in body removal hence I bought a 5.0 sc xkr which I love but would love a range rovers along side

Damn you. I was looking at big LWB saloons and now you have reignited my RR itch... checked insurance and it's not the barrier I thought it might be either. Help.

I’ve owned two Vogues and when they started they were great. Problem was start/non-start ratio grew to circa 50%. But that’s not why I moved away from Landrover. The reason was the customer service was the worst I had ever encountered by a mile. 🙁

Why didn’t Land Rover use a rolling code method for the keyless entry as other manufacturers use?
@robholland1937 Жыл бұрын
They have a lot to do in order to pull back from this issue. I’ve driven Range Rovers for years but Porsche for me next. I’ll keep my 2011 4.4 TDV8 Range Rover and 1974 Series 3 Lightweight Land Rover though 😊Happy to chat anytime. I’m over the hill in Petersfield 👍😎

Is the current increase in thefts specific to the UK market? I’ve not heard if other markets have the same problem to the same level?

just use the old and trusted metal steer lock... or install a fuel cut off device... you disable the fuel pump when you park...

I know this video is now 2 months old, however I've just had my renewal advice from Admiral. £764.. Car is a 2023 D350 Range Rover Sport. Living in West Wales. I also have a BMW X1 23. M Sport, 2023 model. Renewal cost £652. So in comparison the Range Rover is acceptable.

We took an original (modified) 2 door through the back of inland Queensland at the end of 1970 or 1971. It went everywhere. Up and down sand dunes, through flooded land (3 kilometres wide). The mods were larger fuel tank and suspension mods. Oh and a winch front and rear. No problems. My friends tried the same thing in 2015. It cost $6000 to get a flat bed out to pick it up. Gearbox failure. Now, the reliability can be lived with if when you claim for justified repairs, the Land Rover people will fight you every item on the list. They didn't have to go to court to get their money back as in the same year another person had taken them to court and they lost the case. It cost them about $750,000. The friends got a Landcruiser V8 and completed the research project they were doing. Peter they were good. But the support is terrible. They are not now built for Australian conditions. Want to drive to the centre of Australia? Get a Land Rover. Want to drive back? Get a Toyota. Sure they break too, but support is not a death fight. You and Matt from High Peak must be great friends.

Lots of love for LR & RR in the comments. Personally, I'd never have one. I've got friends that have had them over the last 25 years and every one has had issues with theft or suffered a catastrophic electrical or engine failure. There must be something about them though because they keep buying them....!

Hi, as already mentioned earlier put an on/off switch on the remote or get the car makers to stop putting keyless entry on cars It's not exactly hard to press the unlock/lock buttons. On my previous 2016Jaguar XFS there was a combination of fob presses to turn off the keyless entry which I did I wonder if other Jag/Landrover cars are the same. Check with your dealer or the forums.

For some reason no one reads an owners manual anymore, it takes about 5 seconds to turn keyless off on most landrover vehicles (done it on my defender)

I spec'd up a P400 SE in 2022 for GBP113K (base price was 102,500). That was with every optional extra and accessory you could possibly need or want, with the exception of the off-roading cameras. IMO, you can't get a more luxurious and utilitarian vehicle for the money. However, the London problem is, well, a problem.

Love the Range Rover, especially the 3.0TDi. Car manufacturers generally could/should do a lot more to make their cars far more secure and less attractive to thieves. Deterrents such as more sophisticated immobilisers / tracking systems and parts security markings could be improved significantly and every relevant security detail saved to an international register.

When is this Land Rover insurance being released in London?

I don't know why manufacturers don't put a simple switch on the key. switch it on when you're about to go out and switch it off for the night. the RF pouch and faraday cages are overkill. it'll save battery on the keys too
