Well, what a machine. In 1971 I noticed a Series 1 Land Rover abandoned in a field. After some investigation, I managed to purchase the vehicle for £65.50 and spent some weeks getting it driveable and having a new tilt fitted. We then drove it to North Wales from SW England for a camping holiday. What memories. It is still in use, at least taxed and MOT. Wish I still had it now ! Dream on.

This brings back memories of my dad working for EMEB, East Mids Electricity Board and he had a much bigger one with crew seats behind the front 3. My dad only brought it home when he was on 'stand by' and may have to go at a moment's notice and he wasn't allowed to take anyone in it but he'd occasionally pop out for some pipe tobacco or cigars and being Daddies girl, I'd go too but would have to sit low. It was so basic but I bloody loved it. Another time whilst at EMEB he had a 'forward control' Land Rover 101 which reminded me of an army lorry. It had a huge metal back on it and on the near side, had a separate side door into the crew bench seats which were partitioned off from the front seats. Fantastic machines. I was into so many vehicles from being a pre-school child. I was destined to be a Petrol/diesel head over anything with 2+ wheels & an engine 😂

1st to second and 3rd to 2nd should be done by doubling the clutch as it won’t have any synchros. Also, the series 1 went from 1948 until 1958 but changed wheelbase a few times, the one you have is an 80inch, then it went to 86 and then right at the end it was 88inch which is what Land Rover stuck with for the SWB until the end of the series 3! The series 1 also had a LWB in 107 and 109, again the 109 was what Land Rover stuck with in the LWB Wonderful vehicle and a beautiful restoration.

Drum brakes, no synchromesh, inlet over exhaust engine, takes skill to drive, try driving off road or towing a horse trailer. Oh there was 110 before Defender! As for reliability they are rubbish that why in Australia Toyota and Nissan destroyed their market share! Rose tinted glasses LR are shite! Oh and I’m an ex LR service Manager.

Wish you had driven her off road sir, not doing so was like driving the McLaren down a farm track, and commenting on the rubbish suspension, and impractical ground clearance as her skirts scraped over potholes and large rocks 😂 Lovely car, the later series 1's got a bigger engine too, so they were even less slow. I think all the old Land Rovers are very engaging to drive, unlike contemporary cars which, although easy, are boring; nothing like as engaging. Thus the huge grin on your face when you drive her, every journey an adventure. The cars just lovely, and should be driven every week, not locked away, imho. Once you go off road, she will become a different animal, and be awesome with unbelievable abilities, and in my experience, really comfortable over the worst terrain In an unhurried, that's what I was built for, kind of way. Back in the 70’s a mate had a series 1 Land Rover and a Dolomite Sprint. The Dolly was in a body shop in Earlswood and needed collecting. We went over in the Landy and I said I’d drive it back to his place. It’s only about 6 miles from Earlswood to Solihull but it was the longest drive I’ve ever done 🤣. Chasing the steering box to keep straight along country roads was very scary 😵‍💫

The look on your face spoke legions, like a big kid. You'd have loved my pre-war MG PB (1936), with crash box, (but it was actually as smooth as anything), fly off handbrake, double declutch etc etc. She'd cruise all day at 60, top speed however 86 and I did it on the M25 once, passing everything, exhaust note she roared just like a Spitfire which it lit up the High Street where I lived. An utter delight to drive, like your Land Rover, so much character you could have cut it with a knife. She'd been rebuilt in the 70's by a chap to concours condition, if she'd been any smaller I'd have put her on the mantlepiece instead of the garage but she wasn't alone as she had my other cars for company at night. I just loved her to bits. When she passed 2 or 3 modern cars (in one bite) I'd pat her and tell her how well she'd done! Its the sheer delight every time you drive such vehicles isn't it, you just can't describe it. Your brilliant video brought it all back, thank you so much.

Hi nice video, the car your driving has a 2L in it and not the early 1.6 engine. Regarding the dates of the landrover series 1 there where 3 models The 80 inch dating from 48 to 53 The 86 inch dating from 54 to 56 The 88 inch dating from 57 to 59

Drove dozens of these (later series) since the mid-sixties in the RAF. This brings back memories....some even reasonably good. A trick we learned when the beast was cold was to put it into second gear THEN into first. Goes in smoother. The ones we had had the fuel tanks under the seats. Health and safety fooey. Driving along, sat on umpteen gallons of go-juice under your backside with only a seat pad between you. Steering was a bit , how shall we put it, loose? Wallowy? Vague? Memories..............

Brilliant car, I was in the fire service back in the 80’s and we had a 1949 series 1 fire tender (L4P) on station which I drove regularly to rural fires, no synchro gear box so double declutch, loved it, when I left in 1989 it had 14000 miles on the clock.

First car I owned was a Morris Minor Traveller (garden shed on wheels)no cissy stuff like automatic choke, just the pull out/push in variety. It was also blessed with a starting handle which I used once in the depths of winter in Dundee - fired first time. This one had a very familiar (good)) old car smell. Anyway back to LR my wife and I did an off road course in a 110 LR diesel which amazingly we passed, or was the instructor just keen to get back for lunch. Highlight was learning to engage low ratio first gear and let it go down a very steep icy rutted track at Glentarkie in Fife. We thought our last moment had arrived but the 110 just gently cruised downhill. Amazing very capable vehicle. I bought a LR Discovery not long after - the BMW 5-cyl version. It was bullet-proof very reliable. Only a pheasant managed to KO the nearside fog lamp. Other than that - no problem and very capable in off-road and icy or snow conditions.

Good to see..I have been driving my 1951 for 50 years..even before I owned it. Steering is supposed to be good.so that 52 has problems to fix. The top speed is 72 mph, or faster with the windscreen on the bonnet..rev limit to watch. Cornering is excellent with slight understeer. Power into corner,gives excellent results. The one you tested was a 2 litre not the 1.6 litre.

I had a long wheel base Land Rover toy car made by Britain, I think. It had sprung suspension, rubber tyres, opening doors and bonnet. Iconic British engineering.

Fantastic trip down memory lane! I learnt to drive at around 13 years of age on a series 1 109 landie, well that and a ford dexter! One thing that land rovers got right where modern day utility off roaders quite often dont is install pedals that can be operated when wearing a heavy pair of wellies covered in mud. All too often I find wellies jam between the pedals on modern cars! Anyway thank you, now I feel really old!😂

In 75 our head of sports at school got a brand spanker hardtop 7seater 88 with the bonnet spare. Used to take us the 5miles to local sailing club on Wednesdays. I'm sure the boneshaker ride gave us all bad backs. Remember the smell and the noise, especially when he put the heater on, was either freezing or sauna hot.

That land rover is an absolute peach. I have been around them most of my life, growing up in Derbyshire they were and are more common than cows. One of my first memories of a series 1 was one of my teachers buying one for a £5 and ragging it round the playing field . I've owned a series 3 and discoveries but would donate limbs and organs to own that beauty.( p.s.) congratulations on the 100k subs ,well done mate....

Concerning your comment about driving position, I can not drive a pre 1993 Dodge standard - single cab. I am only 6 feet tall. However, my femurs are long and in all Dodge trucks prior to 1993 my knees are on the dash and I can not work the pedals. I learned this when one winter day I rode my motorcycle to Van Dyke Dodge. The salesman joked that there vehicles had heat. I had my Aerostitch and was fine with the weather. I needed to carry more than in my courier bag. They had one 1992 W-200 left on the lot. The 1993s had not yet been delivered. It was just what I would specify - Cummins, manual trans, and 4 wheel drive. I was sad when I realized that I could not drive it.

I restored no. 146 which started with a broken chassis held together by the propshaft!. I had to completely fabricate the complete bulkhead section because it was all folded steel not pressed

A good friend has a last off the line Defender in brand new condition..just 100 miles. From my forces days the series II, lightweight, 110 forward control to the modern Wolf (dry & waterproofing for beach landings) to the Snatch in various guises in different countries in different specs. Rough & ready but did the job ( apart from the snatch in Iraq) cracking upload as per 👍🏻
