The new Dacia Spring A segment city hatch with a bigger boot is cheaper at less than £15k. After sitting in traffic listening to my friend complain about her manual Alfa I can't help but think that the more fit for purpose Dacia beats this hands down. Most city car drivers wouldn't appreciate the engine sound either, although I personally enjoyed my last 3 cylinder cars engine note. What about emissions zones? So for many people there is very good reason to go EV and this Kia would be a bit of a pain.
@brummiesalteno-816 ай бұрын
Actually BEV would be perfect for this car. Think about it BEV's are more efficient in the city, you're unlikely to use this car outside the city often and will likely be a second car and would be much cheaper to run. Just a shame most car manufacturers don't want to make cheap BEV's.

Small, simple and back to basics. Can’t fault Kia for that. Ford made a big mistake ditching the fiesta, because I think there’s still a market for small city cars that are cheap to run and just have the essentials you need. This is ideal for nipping to town or busy built up areas. Small wheels and a nice simple non turbo petrol engine. Other manufacturers are missing a trick here I think.

Perfectly proves the point that, if you just want straightforward transport to get you from A-B, you don’t have to spend ridiculous amounts of money. Credit to you for featuring this and I’m sure Kia will shift loads of them to the motoring masses. 8yrs ago my daughter was fed up with her older cars always having problems, so I suggested she looked at a new Kia Rio as it came with a 7yr warranty so, if she had it serviced regularly, she wouldn’t have any worries for 7yrs basically. It cost her a similar amount and here we are 8yrs later and 100k miles and it’s still running perfectly. Apart from servicing costs it hasn’t needed anything spent on it so what’s not to like? This is motoring for the masses and until they produce an EV for a similar amount this is what people will buy.

I’m about to take delivery of my 4th brand new Picanto, 1st one was a ‘62’ plate in 2013. It was the ‘3’ version in flat white and manual. 2nd was a ‘4’ model ‘65’ plate in metallic red and automatic. 3rd was the ‘18’ plate GT Line S, manual in flat powder blue. A brief visit to a Stonic hybrid in ‘71’ plate, and now back to the Picanto, this time another GT Line S in the new green outfit with the automated 5 speed DCT transmission. I am male but I don’t care much about speed and power, but the level of equipment is more important. I do like my luxury as a former Jaguar XJ6 (I owned two of them) owner can testify. As mentioned in the video even the ’2’ trim being tested had lots of toys as you put it, the GT Line S has more toys and luxury than was ever in my old Jags!! These are brilliant little cars, great for all ages of drivers and both genders. I hope Kia continue with this car or if they discontinued it, I hope they replace it with the next gen city car type, whatever its new name would be. 3 cheers for the Picanto 🙂

7 year warranty so cost of parts isn't much of an issue. Servicing cost at UK main dealers is a bit pricey like most dealerships are but 3 or 4 year plans make it cheaper, besides you're free to get it serviced and MOTd anywhere you like without invalidating the warranty. I've owed my Picanto for 8 years and it's had no work done on it other than replenishables.

One of the many great things about most Hyundai and Kia cars is that their fuel consumption claims are very honest. I drove the Hyundai i20 and it would often do 50-55 mpg. I am currently driving a Kia XCeed (great car by the way) 1.5T-GDI which the manufacturers claim will do 44 MPG. I usually get 47-48 mpg, and have seen it go as high as 58 mpg on one trip. Add to that great quality and a very nice driving experience and It’s no wonder that they rank No.3 in the world today. I’m sold!

Love these little beasties. Puts the driving experience back into driving and the level of kit is surprising for the cost. Ideal for zipping around town or the twisty windy country roads, and ideal for driving around the old towns in Italy and the Amalfi where a tiny car is an advantage. Park the thing anywhere and if push comes to shove can take 4 adult passengers. Back seats folded and two large suit cases are easily accommodated. More economical than an EV and probably in true environmental impact is less polluting than a Pure EV , because most EV are charged on coal or gas fired power and the true cost and Environmental impact of Battery manufacture take into account. lighter so less damage to roads etc.

I had a 2014 Picanto that came after a Jaguar XF Portfolio with a twin turbo V6 diesel and a lot of kit. As nice as the Jaguar was I loved the Picanto for it's lightness and fun drive. The ride comfort was amazingly sorted and the gearchange was like knife though butter. It even felt capable on the motorway. It's remarkable that this class of car isn't common now but suggests to me that legacy marques are compromised by the transition to electric cars and are losing money on each EV they build so they have axed low profit small cars. Thanks for the video. 👍🏼

My first car was a 2nd-hand 1960 2-door Morris Minor 1000 in mint condition, which my dad lent me AU$300 to buy. It was the ultimate in simplicity & super reliable. Its 37bhp motor took 30+ seconds to reach 60mph when mashing through the 4sp gearbox. Every weekend, I took four of my mates down to the coast to check out the beaches, and we had so much fun. It got up to 80mph & 85 downhill, but the drum brakes were inadequate over 65mph. The 15X3" rims were shod with 5" cross plies & it never got out of control at the speed limit. The steering wheel was fixed, and the front windows were manual wind-ups while the rears pivoted. It had quarter vents, and that was it for air circulation. It did not have a fan or a heater, but it had a full-sized spare and a crank to start the motor if the battery ran flat. Seats were vinyl with only for & aft adjustment. We're talking mid- to late '60s, and if I could catch up with my mates from then, I'm sure they'd remember the fun we had in the little Morrie. Oops, I just remembered. The door handles were loops of vinyl & the dash was metal. The base Picanto is a supercar considering all the performance, air comforts, entertainment, and safety features. If I were a teenager looking for my first car, I'd be sucking up to Dad to lend me the funds for a 2nd-hand one in excellent condition. Spare parts would be cheap & readily available from the wreckers. Come to think of it, the world would be a better place if people forgot about EVs, plug-in hybrids, and novated leases and gave up gym memberships and smoking. Picantos are capable of doing 95% of what families need and renting a bigger vehicle for holidays would cover the remaining 5%.

The little 3-cyl engine giving a wonderful noise, the fact it does not creak and rattle meaning it is well made, and puts back the real FUN of driving at low speeds. Yes, it does not have the space for four up and long distance, but as a day to day car for commutes, the fact your big smile on you face, makes it for me, a bit of a winner. Mind you I have had several superminis over the years and it is that low(er) speed fun when you are driving to work, or a quick weekend away makes it so much more fun! I genuinely thought that the sound of the car was another joke was thinking ohh he's put a different engine sound over the top.... It actually sounds like that! A map and a Halford wing and you got half a rice box there... Love it

We have a 2017 Sportage, and in the past have owned a Sedona 2.9 td (rebadged Mercedes diesel engine) from new for 13 yrs, and a Carens. All have been utterly reliable. I run a Suzuki Baleno 2016 with a 1 ltr 3 cylinder engine and am getting 58 mpg.

Love these little cars. I’ve always had cars of this size as it is only me in the car and I don’t need some massive suv thing for one person just to go to work and back. Also, for insurance purposes too because of my age. I currently have a 1 litre vw up top spec and it’s just £660 a year full comp. This is my 3rd year of driving and I was also in a collision too. Yeah, the one litre does struggle at times, but at the end of the day the mpg is brilliant and it is just what I need. I glad that a car manufacturer is still making these city cars as most have stopped making them. The design on the picanto looks pretty cool to me. I’m someone who likes something quirky. Most people my age want Audi or BMW, but I think economical and want my money to go as far as possible don’t need nothing flashy at my age.

My daughter has a 55 reg one which was given to her by my mum. It had original tyres on the rear (mileage only 34K) and the aircon still works. A bit gutless but a great first car.

Firstly, if the base model of a range is good, the rest will be very good. Second, modest power with a proper manual means the driver has *think* about what they're doing, and hurray! for that. I like these things.

Good review Pete, should keep the naysayers quiet for a bit “you are reviewing too many unobtainium cars” etc….as for the Kia, obviously when a lot of manufacturers have dumped smaller models, they still feel there is a market, so all kudos to them. Also, I always read that the big touch screens in most modern (and more expensive cars) are all about cost saving, so the lack of switches and knobs, so how come it’s not the case here!!

Nice to see it at that price, but I would go for the Dacia Spring. As it will be even cheaper to run.

Bought my daughter one of these 18 months ago as her first car, higher spec than this, but otherwise very similar. This really is a great little car, a bit more poke would be nice, but we’ve been to London twice to get some experience in more challenging conditions absolutely no problems. Will happily buzz along at 70/80, super easy to drive, all the toys a teen needs, comfortable and quiet enough and handles really rather well, it has character and isn’t dull/unresponsive. A relative bargain in a world of stupidly expensive cars, would throughly recommend

We are a 2 car family with 2 grown up boys, well young men 24 and 25 and both 6 foot. When we all go out we go in the main car, a 2017 Kia Optima GT Line S, one that I would l like to replace but sadly Kia don't do them anymore. Our other car is a 2011 Kia Picanto 1.2 Automatic and I actually quite like driving it. My dad bought it new but when he got to the age when he shouldn't be driving we bought it off him and apart from a spring cracking a few years ago we haven't really had any problems with it. I had three other Kias before the Optima and they have been very reliable and both the spring problem with the Picanto and any problems I have had with the Optima have all been covered under their great warranty.

Id say the Niro is the best size compromise; a proper family car, plenty of boot capacity, fairly small and easy to park. If you dont need that space, the Sttonic 3 cylinder turbo DCT is a hoot

One comment, Pete seven years warranty and all the new safety tec. The satellite navigation is great and the speed limiter is ok. I've ever got used to the Bings & Bongs after a while. 😂 Great presentation mate.
