Speaking of shipping costs of heavy items; It's absolutely crazy how international shipping progressed in affordability and speed over the years. I remember waiting for three months for an online purchase to reach me (from the other side of the planet) with crazy shipping prices (usually more costly than the product itself) to now shipping costing free or next to nothing, and the waiting time is only a week. Heck, I recently bought a large bag of flour (a little over 20 pounds) that was shipped to me from over 600 miles away with free shipping. The item was cheaper than in stores (by a large margin), _and_ it arrived in 2 or 3 days! What a time to be alive.
@volvo095 ай бұрын
Yeah shipping is crazy cheap these days! It was nothing like it is now "back then". Nobody would ship something you can get from the grocery store or the local pet store, it was just stupidly expensive, and weight mattered much more than it does now.
@humb1s3rvant5 ай бұрын
It depends highly on the country and their import taxes, commonality of the product and not necessarily weight. For example I wanted a Radio Flyer wagon for my boys in Morocco. It would cost twice as much to ship it here from the US as to buy it there. It all depends on location and product.

I remember them, and remember thinking how cool of an idea it seemed at the time. But as a consumer it just never really made any sense to use them. As far as I remember, they just offered the same sort of stock that you could get from a 5 minute drive to Walmart. And, at that time, Walmart's prices were still fairly low; so paying for shipping and waiting 2-3 weeks for the same pet supplies you could just buy at a store didn't make sense. As for the high cost of technology- If you look at how much money Amazon has invested into their logistics technology; that's the kind of pricetag that Pets was looking at. Not just the cost of hosting a website and managing orders; but the technology cost of doing inventory digitally and sorting things for shipping everywhere in the US to a large marketshare was insanely high for that time period. Could you imagine running a company like modern day Amazon on something akin to a Windows 98 machine?

I think what Chewy's doing right is offering a wider variety of products than you can find in a pet store. I have a pet hamster, as you can tell by my username. If you go to a pet store, small animals products are treated like an afterthought. There will just be a small section, and a very small selection. You'll have just a couple choices if you're looking for food or toys. Chewy, meanwhile, has hundreds of small animal products available.

I get to see bunnies, chinchillas, hampter, even fish, etc. I would guess many pet owners also enjoy this element - getting to see these cute animals when you pop in for a new toy or bag of specialist food. Back when I did own a bird, my parents would often pick up some bells/ring toys, or seed treats while checking in on the bunnies on display. Can't get this same experience online.

I recall those early days of e-commerce going back decades ago . . . Venture capitalists were pouring millions into web startup companies, where the mentality was: _Set up a company website, and watch the money roll in on the return of investment._ Even the people running the web startups thought that having a website equated to financial gains. But, they lacked business sensibilities of supply chains, logistics, distribution, and customer support. The *smoke and mirrors* business models of web businesses, or e-commerce, came crashing down in 2001; often referred to as the _bubble burst._

I agree people were apprehensive of online shopping, but I don't see any logic to your reason. What kind of tech and media were people buying online in 2000? Online shopping also took a while to perfect to the point it got easy and wasn't a hassle.

I'm in IT: it was an interesting era because multi-core processors weren't yet a thing and multiprocessor was both server only and very expensive; tech that is relatively inexpensive desktop level today was at least hundreds of thousands of dollars in specialized server hardware then. Further, a lot of the Dot-Com companies were far more about marketing and not really interested in the tech their presence depended on, cutting corners as much as possible on that end.
