Petting a Greater Roadrunner

I was surprised how close this roadrunner allowed me to get to her because they usually run away when they see people. I just sat down next to her to take pictures and then I decided to try to pet her. I thought she was going to fly away but she stayed. After I finished petting her she jumped on the saguaro next to the palo Verde and went to sleep. She allowed me to dok this several times. / pachucos_art

She was actually an adult. They had babies last year and now the young ones won't let me near them. You can watch some of my videos when they had the babies and when they were feeding then until they left the nest.

I do landscaping for a living and had one of them come right up to me the other day even with a backpack blower going full throttle. Followed us around eating all of the scraps we found. I thought he was in distress but not at all

I have two that follow my car through the neighborhood so me and the kids can feed them.They are still pretty shy.thier lovely creatures and you cant really appreciate how pretty they are until you see one up close.thier comb always gets me when they raise it curiously.

Roadrunners seem to be very curious about humans, I had one that would walk right up to me when I was out on the porch. It would walk into my house if I left the door open for it. I kind of wanted to pet it but didn't want to scare it.

Petting technique could use improvement. Continuous use of back of hand instead of palm and tips of fingers. Overall, this pet nets you a good 6/10. Solid performance.

I know but I was so nervous I didn't know how to pet it. They became my friends and I followed them until their 6 babies left the nest last year.

Where is this at? I live in Globe and the road runner has grown on me. I saw on about a month or so ago hunting butterflies. Only females can be petted?

This is cute but not sure it is good for the Roadrunner. Not having fear of people could make it where it could be hurt or killed because it doesn't run when it should.

The birds are in TorPor when roosting. Think temporary hibernation, or "trance". So ... not special.

Any chance of transferring human germs to bird, that could harm it? I'm asking because I'd love to be able to pet wild birds, but I'm afraid not to harm them.

it's possible, but more than likely the other way around. long as you wash your hands before and after, I'm sure you'll be fine. just stay away from the nestlings and fledglings. it can cause the parents and the young unnecessary stress. good luck! :)

that's amazing you were able to have the patience to gain their trust. most people in that situation would'nt be so cautious and would just charge right in. the only thing i'd be worried about is alerting predators to the location of the nest. but it seems everyone survived. i had a mated pair near where i used to live in AZ. i never found a nest. the male and female would come to my water station i had for birds and drink. occasionally taking a sparrow or two for a meal. i really enjoyed watching the birds there. the hummingbirds were some of my favorites. i had quite the set up in my front yard. a feeder for every palette. i sure miss it.
