Those who are wondering, some sharks does have to move constantly to keep air goes through their gills but most of the sharks, like reef sharks, which is the shark we see in the video, they could stay in the ocean floor and rest because of their pumping motion of their pharynx

For everyone wondering why she's wearing chainmail, it's to protect her from their teeth while she removes fishing hooks and other things that get stuck and caught. She has formed lots of bonds with sharks because of this and "word" seems to get around since many come to visit her for it. There are plenty of lovely videos here on KZbin with people not wearing chainmail and interacting with sharks as she does :)

Khelgar Ironfist sharks don’t have hands or paws, and they are curious, so the only way they have to “investigate” something is by biting, even if they don’t want to hurt us with these bites our body’s are too soft and we end up getting hurt, it’s for protection. They are wild animals after all

Besides shark bite protection mail is apparently also sometimes worn by electricians in case of mishaps with live current - being wreathed in conductive metal creates a Faraday cage that keeps you from getting fried. Apparently also sometimes used as "socks" to protect from snakebites IIRC.

@@magekarp4531 exactly. They are very inquisitive and curious creatures, it's just a shame that it's results are so dire. It's a behaviour called mouthing for those who don't know, there's videos of them chopping down and biting on shark cages and rubber boats etc. They don't mean harm and it's not an act of aggression, they just want to figure out things.

All pleasure derived from petting ultimately comes from grooming. This is even true for humans. You'll also find that animals who do not participate in any kind of grooming are kind of "meh" about petting. So, it's really quite the same as petting a dog or someone gently stroking your own head or back. Sharks normally gain this grooming pleasure from feeder fish, so I believe with reason that they still get the same pleasure from being pet even if not being actively cleaned. The sensation feels nice to them either way or they would not do it.

@@hoppinggnomethe4154 wha- this is one of the most confusing things I’ve heard on the internet. If people doesn’t believe in something as simple as human decency then those aren’t people we should listen to. I’m talking about pushing your religion onto another person who might not even believe in any god, not pushing someone to be gay. What you’re talking about is in our society displayed. This would be a completely different reply if it was about stuff that could be debated as real or not. Yes we are human but there is definitely a difference to a god and real living people or problems in our world. If someone is confused about these topics do a bit of research. I’m not sure if you actually picked these topics because you yourself think these or are just putting down the first ideas that came to mind, these are terrible examples when talking about some possible deity. I’m not going to go into these topics because this isn’t the video to do it on. This is a video about a woman petting some sharks. If you want to learn more about these topics go do the research, if you’re not willing to do that then you aren’t a person who I should care about.

It’s amazing that sharks are seen as these brainless eating machines, but we have to remember, they can’t tell the difference between humans and their usual food that they eat. Yes it’s sad that people can get eaten by sharks, but it’s not like the shark does it with malicious intent. Sharks are really cool creatures, and it’s amazing to how well they can bond with a human being.
@justbrowsing4925
@justbrowsing4925 11 ай бұрын
They actually can. Most shark attacks happen in murky or dark water. During such they more heavily rely on the organ in their nose for detecting electricity. Infact usually shark attacks end on their own after they start, when the sharks get a bite and decide it doesn’t taste right. Again keynote is Usually. They still are dangerous.
@gyppygirl2021
@gyppygirl2021 7 ай бұрын

*For everyone who wonders:* These sharks also have prominent spiracles, or respiratory openings behind the eyes that allow the fish to pull in water while buried under sand. Other sharks use ram ventilation; that is, they ventilate their gills by swimming very fast with their mouths open. Some sharks, such as the tiger shark, can switch between buccal pumping and ram ventilation depending on quickly they're swimming. "Obligate ram ventilators" are sharks that have lost the ability, and the necessary anatomy, for buccal pumping, and instead can only respire using ram ventilation. Sharks from this group (which includes great white, mako and whale sharks) would indeed die from lack of oxygen if they stopped swimming.

Most shark species can't digest humans because we're often not fatty enough for them, tigers and bulls might be able to but most can't. When they bite they're often repulsed by our blood. But I do agree with you, as their habitats and prey items are being destroyed and overfished they do become more desperate. Some even go after fishers catches who dive and stab fish (can't remember the name) and go after the caught fish. Sharks are essential to our ecosystems and health of our ocean, we really do need them! And while some can't overlook the terrible work of Spielberg and Hollywood of their successful demonisation of sharks and that they perceive them as bloodlusting monsters, they're predators like any other who want to survive, eat and so on. Hollywood has done such a disservice to these magnificent creatures.

Dolphins actually tend to be more aggressive than sharks. They also tend to do... well, to put it lightly, some really nasty stuff. Like chewing on puffer fish to get high (and the fish probably doesn't survive that encounter). Dolphins have a good rep in media because they have human-like intelligence and are "cuter", while sharks have been demonized for no good reason. (Of course, I'm not saying that we should kill dolphins, they're also an important part of the ecosystem. I'm also not saying that we shouldn't have a healthy respect for sharks - they can still be dangerous.)

Sharks behave this way near 'cleaning stations' of the ocean where other crustations and fish remove parasites growing on them. Maybe by stroking and petting them you are stimulating that natural instinct not to attack those who are removing parasites off them.

Thank you for posting this. The sharks' behavior seemed extremely odd, and instead of jumping to "see they just want to be hugged" as most viewers assume, this explanation makes a lot more sense. Social bonding, altruism, and emotional affection would pose very little advantage for a shark, so I doubt they feel these things.

MANY years ago I was surfing on a remarkably good water clarity day for southern California. Between sets I was admiring the fact that I could see the bottom (we usually can't). As I looked down, a very big shark swam, slowly and calmly, under me along the bottom. I inhaled sharply to start screaming, but realized before I started yelling that he was already past me and ignoring the surfers. Definitely got some looks, but decided not to say anything. The shark wasn't even the tiniest bit interested in us and I would have just freaked everyone out. I have had many days where the water was super murky and I got one of those creepy vibes that makes you paddle over to be in the middle of the surfer pack. Makes me wonder how many times over the years sharks have been right below me. Probably lots.
