I am 14 years old and I absolutely love petula Clark’s music. She has a wonderful singing voice and I love listening to her music when I’m drawing in school. I really wish I could talk about her music to people but everyone around me likes different music :(

Even the “positive” comments here are really lame. This is MIRACULOUS singing. Absolutely miraculous. She had been singing in public, at this level, for almost 80 years when this was recorded. Her voice is still STEADY, dead-center on pitch, and youthfully beautiful . She sounds like she’s 35. What a great, great career she’s having!

@JuliaVanVreeStatenVl4 жыл бұрын
You are so right. As I understand it she had to sing for hours (sometimes twice) each day in live musicals during the 50s. So she learned how to preserve her voice. As you probably know many vocalists sing their voice to pieces in a couple of years. And nowadays...there isn't a voice in the beginning to destroy. Whoopy, the progress we made!

I can remember singing this song as a very young child. My mother always had the radio on while cleaning house and this song was huge, must have been around 1965.
@theblytonian39065 жыл бұрын
Pet was "huge" in the mid through late 1960s. Good memory. Downtown was released just before Christmas 1964 and played unmercifully on the radio what seemed like at least every hour in early '65. It could be heard regularly through the second half of that decade as she streamed out hit after hit written for her by Tony Hatch. Although she was and is a trooper and a star long beforehand, that she not only survived the Beatles and guitar group era is testament to her talent, and arguably when her stardom shone brightest in the memory of many of us still living. I'm going to see her in concert in May. I don't get excited about much any more, but I'll admit to an exception for Pet.

Makes me remember the radio commercial about Downtown Portland, Oregon that was done at least 20 years ago now. I still remember it because they used this song in the radio commercial. Unfortunately they stopped running that radio commercial in the mid 2000's. I believe the last time they ran that radio commercial was in early 2008, right at the beginnings of the recession then. Since then, downtown Portland, Oregon is trying to recapture how it was once world renowned for being a bustling city center. So much has changed here since then. I don't know if Portland will ever recover from a series of economic blows from 2008 onward. Portland needs so much revitalization. It's certainly not the Portland I remember while growing up here, and that's sad coming from a longtime Portland native. There is a lot of hope that Portland will once again someday rebuild it's reputation.

Who can ever forget?! So interesting in history when in big cities with their landmark downtowns, was actually an EVENT when you go there, during the golden age. Of course nowadays, it has progressed to malls, the word 'Downtown' has evolved into various meanings & connotations. However, it's nice to reminisce that the time capsule when this song first came out, was the wholesome, innocent period of a special place we call: Downtown!
Mega Mega RESPECT TO A MEGA LADY. I was two when this song was out.
