The first time I heard this song I was 4 years old, and it has been with me ever since. My mother told me I was toddling around the house singing it after hearing it on the radio. I think patula sounded just as good maybe better in 2013 than she did in 1964. Wow.

I think that Jools 'got it in one' when he prepared for Petula Clark to appear on his Hootenanny show. Quite simpley this is the best ever *'live'* version of 'Downtown' out there. And his band is on top form here as they backed up such an iconic figure as Petula Clark. His band really show that they want to 'give it their all' for her. *And what a performance from Petua!* She is amazing. Well done to everyone!

The song was written - both lyrics and music - by Tony Hatch who also produced the track with many of Petula's other tracks. He also co-composed many others of Petula's other track along with his wife of the time, Jackie Trent and Petula herself.

That's amazing. My mother always tells a story about my Dad, who passed away a few years ago. Back in the sixties, his party piece was to get on the microphone in a pub and do a rendition of this song. He was so bad...one night they gave him the prize - a bottle of Champagne - just to get off the stage. Growing up, my dad always used to play this song. And to this day, I continue the tradition ... my karaoke is awful, I cannot sing a note. But I love it.

Comparisons are inevitable. Pet Clark was the original artist who performed this song, so when someone else does it, it's going to be compared to the original. Pet Clark's voice is strong and resonant. When Baby Spice performs it, you're going to hear right away that she has the weaker voice. She performs this song in a half-whisper. If you actually prefer it that way, that's your preference, but it's objectively true that Pet Clark has the much stronger voice.

The only one who's being immature is you. People are going to have their preferences. It's not the end of the world. Grow up. Do you go around to videos of every remake of every song and chide people for having their preferences? "Oh, how DARE you prefer one version over another??? How DARE you recognize that one singer has a stronger voice than another???" And by the way, I fail to see how the fact that Bunton was performing for a charity in any way diminishes my comment. Bunton also made a video of this song. And I will continue to say that Clark did a much better job and has a much stronger voice. Get over it.

I KNOW! Sure, when she starts off, she seems a bit wobbly, but she really does stick the hard notes very well, and she pulls out plenty of power when she needs it and for the finish. It really warmed my heart to see how she could ramp it up at the end.
