Last weekend´s Montée des Legendes in France was a Hillclimb Festival with some amazing guests, but what caught our attention was the possibility of watching back to back Two Peugeot Monsters: the 600+Hp/930Kg Group B 205 T16 Evo II and Loeb´s 875Hp/875Kg 208 T16 Pikes Peak.
Although never a fair comparison when it comes to pure Speed, it was a unique opportunity to watch these 2 Legends that at different points in time were the most extreme cars ever created by Peugeot Sport. Also they both share interesting connections to Pikes Peak, as obviously, Loeb´s car was a former Overall recordist of the event, but Jean Duby´s 205 also uses the engine that Peugeot Sport fitted on the Pikes Peak versions of the 205 T16 that competed on the 1987 edition of Pikes Peak.

208 is absolutely mentally quick and as much as i like it its still just a very good machine, if i had to choose would still take the 205, its got soul, like a wild animal that u have to take by the scruff and try to tame..

+john smith To each their own.But i don't agree with you saying only 205 has soul.208 has it as well in my opinion. You can see how it sounds,how it goes.That car is a true animal.I'd rather dare to slam the pedal in 205 than 208 because 208 seems like it's just too much to handle when compared to 205.

205 has a soul? Maybe, but it's for sure the most souless beast of Gr. B. Literally nothing special, except winning the championship. Metro 6R4 was a N/A V6. 037 was supercharged. Audi Quattro S1 E2 has the inline 5 turbo. The Delta S4 was super- and turbo- charged. Cappable of a lot of HP. Citröen BX was a tryhard Group B wannabe. Ford RS200 had its own shape, and was builted only for rallying. Opel Manta was that guy nobady even thought it was a Group B car.

+Ryan Rivero Santana i never said it had the most soul of all the group b cars all though was still a good car just not compared to the mighty quattro or the beautiful rs200, was merely comparing the old and new peugeots.. (the manta 400 has a place in my heart too as i had the joy to ride in one 4yrs ago and was a truely special experiance!)

Don't forget the 208 is made for the new 100% asphalt Pikes Peak, whilst the 205 had to cope with the dirt part. The lower ride height helps 208's pace a lot..

@@samwisehuluberlu2210 and?? It is proven the pikes peak 205 t16 can deal with both gravel AND tarmac aswell. Where the pikes peak 208 t16 didnt. Besides, the 205t16 have better and more lovely memorable engine sound

I know the 208 is much faster but I like the 205 way more. The older cars just have something the newer cars don't in my opinion.

I liked the era when rally cars were based on street cars. Nowadays it's only a shell that looks a bit like the street version.

@@DragoneerThe Lancia 037, Stratos, the Renault 5 Turbo, Peugeot 205 T16, Audi Quattro, and a lot more are related to road legal versions of the normal cars. At least much closer than modern WRC.

The 205 is a car build for rallying and is a lot older the 208 is probably purposely build for hillclimb racing so it would make sense

oui mais la 208 reste et restera une legende car il n y en a qu une et que loeb a l epoque a exploser le record de pikes peak de 1min30 et il a aussi l un des meilleurs temps a la monte de goodwood et il a gagner en 2014 quand il y etait

Incomparable, la 205 et la 406 t16 . Loeb dit lui même qu’il ne pourrait pas faire se qu’ils ont fait. La seul différence c’est l’époque . Aujourd’hui les jeune ne savent même plus régler une carbu . Leur voiture sont branchés à un pc pour gagner 40 ch a l’époque t’ouvrait ton moteur et tu savait se qu’il a été fait . Maintenant c’est que du Jacky. Et navrée mais pikes peak , c’est la 405 , route en terre , des couille , la main pour esquiver le soleil . Ça c’est l’histoire .

@VY A.L.M c'est vrai, et on reprochait déjà aux voitures des années 1980 d'être "trop technologiques" en comparaison de celles des années 1960. On verra en 2030 ce qu'on dira ! En tout cas je fais pas le hipster, les voitures d'avant, c'est cool, les voitures actuelles, aussi ! Tant que ça va vite ça me branche !

The Peugeot 208 Pikes Peak was the best tarmac rally car ever created. It was driven by the best rally driver ever created. That record-setting lap was peak motorsport history. I don’t think things get any better than that.

@@Kennypce thats wrong comparing 205 and 208 in a linear way...One was built purely for pikes peak, that means "smooth" tarmac only and alone...205 for rally. Place the 208 in a rally course vs 205...Youll see all that 208´s "speed in corners" wont help much in fact will be a disaster...thats also like comparing the audi S1 E2 to the AUDI S1 PP...

Quand on voit ce dont les constructeurs généralistes français sont capables de faire en sport auto, j ai juste envie de leur dire: « ayez le même niveau d exigence pour la voiture de Mr Tout le Monde... ça élèvera votre crédibilité Vs autres marques internationales. Le marché automobile ne s arrête pas à la France ( pays autophobe ne voulant que de l électrique / monospace / ludospace...). Les autres nations aiment nos marques, ils attendent qu une chose de nos 3 marques nationales : l audace ! Osez bordel !

El 205 es un 205 lo mires desde el angulo que lo mires, se basa en un 205, el 208 ..... tiene 4 ruedas y ahí acaba el parecido por lo demas es un formula 1 con puertas, habria que compararlo con un formula 1 de la epoca del 205 y a ver que pasaba.

La competencia Pikes Peak, era mucho mejor, al menos para el público, cuando el camino era de tierra. Con el asfalto perdió mucha "espectacularidad". Hay un video de Ari Vatanen subiendolo ( en un Peugeot 405, creo) antes de ser asfaltado que es espectacular.

the 205 is a real rally car, made in the time when all those powerful group b machines were fighting all over the world, with proffesional pilots and no electric help from nowhere, it was all turbo and two great hands to control the beast, besides, peugeot wan the 1986 year ....

I think the 205 would or could be made to go a lot lot faster if he crashed his 205 getting parts is near on impossible where as the 208 parts even though its a special would be easier to make or get hold of. The 205 t16 is a priceless artifact and must be treated as such. Long live the greatest era in motorsports history even if its in books videos or just in our minds the 80s where the greatest time in history music cars and life in general.

208 is driven by a different driver who obviously has much better control over the car, he isn’t afraid to enter the corners at higher speeds as we see in the video 208 also has a huge-ass spoiler and body kit that provides unbelieveable amount of downforce 205 is much lighter and would be a monster in the hands of a good driver

would take both of them for a ride, completaly different mentallity on those, the 208 is a reccord breaker machine, the 205 is a rally legend with a proper manual gearbox, just perfect vehicles!

Seen both of these luckily enough. Saw Loeb throught the 208T16 up Goodwood its difficult to think of a more vivid representation of sheer acceleration than thay thing

Proud to own a 1991 1.9gti that now lives in Charente Maritime with us and our husky Odin.Had the car for 16years up till now and have no plans to part with it any time soon. Will go with the 205 over it’s younger brother mainly because back in the 80s group B was the panicle of rallying. Here in France our “pug” turns more than it’s fair share of heads as we tour around the area.If you find one,buy it,without hesitation.Then you will know what it’s all about.

To me it doesn't make sense: two very different categories, two different eras. Rally B vs Pikes Peak Unlimited... to me it's not a fair debate. I think with 405 T16 would be more reasonable...

Entre la 208 et la 205, je crois que je me retrouverai coincé comme l'âne de Buridan: d'un côté la technologie, la vitesse, la puissance et de l'autre l'histoire, la légende, le plaisir. Aaaah quel dilemme ....

La 205 pouvait être encore plus puissante que la 208, en baissant la régulation de la wasegate et en jouant sur l'avance, la 205 peut plafonner à 800/900ch. Et la vitesse aussi, la 208 ne va pas à plus de 250km/h, et certaines boîtes de rallye pour des rallye à grande vitesse était assez longues, et ça poussait à 230/240kmh à fond.

i like the 205 as a collector item and for a Goodwood event to show the car. However if i am competing in the timed shootout, 208 all day.

205 t16 in rally spec v 208 t16 in road race spec(with aero package)! Not really fair, but I'd still take a 205! BTW I had a 180hp MI16 powered 205 once - drove like a motocrosser on 4 wheels, but did 45mpg+!!!!! :)

Even the 205 1.9 diesel is a Legend 😂 If you come to Gorges du Verdon, you'll see and feel why I say that ... Even if we are not very welcoming You're welcome ✌ (may to june .. august to october 🤫)

205 is probably driven with more restraint due to a healthy respect for it being irreplaceable if destroyed. Watch Group B WRC. The car is brutally rinsed back in the day. They just can't afford to do that with a 30 year old car now...

100kg weight difference and over 200hp difference makes it while interesting not really exciting. :/ 205 is still awesome to look at, good old days. Looks like an actual car, not a tube cage with plastic bodyworks.
