Hi James. Thought you'd like to know that I went out and tracked one of these down, all due to your epic journey. Very much a hidden treasure, as like you I didn't even know they existed! Real world range from a rapid in mine is 60-70 miles on the motorway, but from 100% on a home charge driving around Cumbria 90 miles is easy and I've seen 110. Sits on the drive next to the wifes Zoe. Go and have a look at what I'm doing with it - facebook @LakesElectricDelivery and twitter @lakes_eco_van. Keep up the good work.

Peter (Alloam) has pointed out Forfar many times, Dundee Ice Arena is usually the best bet, but you have to eek the miles out a little more. Quite a lot of 43kW AC are only running at 17-22kW. Kinda glad to see, apart from the inconvenience it caused you, that even DC is having an issue. As it was infuriating being the only ones getting a slow speed, especially when they convert the AC to DC. I believe Peter is from Aberdeen.

Might well see the van next time I'm down in Lerwick. I certainly enjoy the journey to/from Aberdeen down to the Midlands, but not done it in anything other than a petrol or diesel car. Don't think I could cope with stopping every 60 miles or so, as I usually aim for 180 mile stops.I'm waiting for EVs with a 200+mile range. Greetings from the Shetland Islands.
@Jamesandkate7 жыл бұрын
Crash Box I think this van will be perfect on Shetland and reports from the new owner suggest he's more than happy. Sadly for that range it's still a Tesla, but next year that will change, also in optimum conditions the Zoe is near that figure. Thanks for commenting 😊👍🏻
@crashbox71307 жыл бұрын
Even though I have a post-war classic and a pre-war vintage car, my modern hack is a 2013 Golf TSI with the DSG 'box and adaptive cruise with autonomous emergency braking. An EV would have to have the ability to 'self drive' in stop/go traffic, like the Golf, to sway me, even though we don't get jams in Shetland. I'm getting lazy behind the wheel of a 21st-century car. LOL! I was very surprised by the fact the van is a 2yr old vehicle and only had delivery mileage. The next-gen Leaf looks promising. All the best.

Lerwick, that's half way to Norway. Looks like the perfect van/vehicle for a Shetland Island. Did the 2015 have a smaller battery than the 2017 which has a 22.5kWh battery and a claimed NHTSA range of 106 miles (170km). Comparing the notoriously optimistic NHTSA estimate and your 83% for 55 miles (equates to 66 miles range for 100%) the difference seems extreme (but still plenty for a Shetland island). Perhaps I misunderstood.
@Jamesandkate7 жыл бұрын
Dogphlap I think the battery size is the same, just some quote usable and others quote full capacity. I did manage 70 on one charge of 85% so the difference is vast depending on landscape, but as you said, Shetland is perfect for this van 😊👍🏻

I think the initial readings of the 50 or so miles was due to the newness of the van. Needed time to calibrate is my guess.

Why can't a van like that be fitted with a genuine 250 mile battery? There _must_ be room under the floor for one. Many van drivers around here (Lincolnshire) clock up about that mileage in a day. That capacity would suit them to a T. Charging can be done overnight back at the office or at home, with only the occasional need for an en route top-up, or maybe one mid-point charge per day for those who make longer runs. Three or more charges per day is ridiculous. Nobody with a diesel stinker needs to refill several times each day.

Interesting Video. I've got a long journey coming up in a Smart ED (London to Cornwall). I'm a bit nervous as I've never used any of the charging stations on the route before and the Smart has quite a short range. Could you tell me what speed do you (did you do in the Smart you drove) drive at on the Motorway? A long time ago I borrowed a Leaf and in an attempt to nurse it home had to drive at 50mph on the motorway (quite a few people took exception to that ;-).

These (and Berlingo) are almost impossible to find, when I phoned up dealers, they either didn't know they made them, or had never had one. Never did get to see one, and had to buy a Nissan E-NV200, which is okay in some ways but has many design fails.

As a tradesman I am thinking of getting an EV van but atm the range is holding me back -50 miles range is just to low. I mean when it's fully loaded and with a roof rack, ladders etc how much will that reduce the range?! The Nissan e nv200 supposedly has a range of 110 miles but like I said that is unladen and on a good day? Maybe someone should test these vans with a full load and driving local roads with hills etc. cheers

I'm with you there Phil. EV van releases and real world road tests have been slow in coming. Couldn't buy one until 2019 though - at least not from that dealer!

The 40kw nissan is out now but 22k + vat is a killer for a sole trader like me, I'm based in London and there are loads of charging places so I'm thinking even 50 miles range would probably not be a problem. Whats the life span of the batteries though does anyone know?

Do you ever do any mental calculations regarding speed/no. of stops required to charge? (Presumably driving slower gives you more range, so might get you to your destination quicker if you need one less charge?)
@Jamesandkate7 жыл бұрын
James Knight yep, I do often ponder the figures but on the one occasion I decided to extend to the next charger I nearly came unstuck. Scotlands landscape isn't the best place to test an EV's range 😳 as I found out

I drive a Kia Soul EV. On the Soul FB world page I pondered this exact question. Of course there is always someone that has done the Maths. This guy apparently tests lots of EV's for this. He has tested for instance a RAV 4 EV. He calculated that the sweet spot for speed + Charging times on Chademo to 80% each time. Worked out at 72mph. This was based on covering 500 miles. You would reach your destination the fastest driving at 72mph.

London Bridge to Aberdeen Railway Station by Google map 538 miles. Which should take a conventional car full loaded at motorway speeds around 9 hrs, with 2 drivers thats with stops 10 hrs with each driver doing about 4.5hrs. How long did you take, and were you running loaded or light?

Penrith a bit hilly - understatement I'd say. I haven't managed any long motorway trips in the Zoe yet. I am guessing the best compromise motorway speed will be 56 mph slipstreaming trucks at a safe distance? I will obviously adjust my speed if my target consumption of 4.5 miles per kwh isn't being hit. The idea is to stop for 1.5 hours total on a 300 mile journey (leaving fully charged would be 185 miles range and then an hour and a half on rapid chargers would give me another 75% charge (138 miles). My car only charges at 22kw so I'd probably stop at Leicester where Ecotricity have 22kw chargers. All a bit scary because I haven't used any pay to use chargers yet and don't know if my cards or apps work! I find it reassuring that you go there given that the van isn't really designed for road trips. I guess doing the triathlons helps with the mental strength to do this sort of thing?
@Jamesandkate7 жыл бұрын
Robert Smith Hi Robert, I think it's down to lack of planning and not over thinking it, and that I've reliably used the network for nearly 5 years and it's always improving. I think your Zoe would be perfect as you have so much redundancy built in to the bigger battery on your 40. I meant to ask how you've been getting on? When you're next doing a road trip be sure to let us know how you get on, and if you're stuck you can charge at ours. I've fully charged 2 Zoe's on our Tesla wall box, 1 22KWh and 1 41kWh, both problem free 😊👍🏻
@robsmith1a7 жыл бұрын
James and Kate thanks for that. my Zoe is doing a bit over 200 miles on a charge if I take it easy in an urban environment and otherwise aboyt 185 miles in mixed driving and quite often doing short bursts at 70mph. it seems the way to get max regen is to brake moderately rather than coast, I now wish they had set the car up to allow heavy regen on lift off. I did one seven mile trip where the consumption suggested 240 miles range but that was basically 35 mph with very light traffic. I still like the car a lot.
@Jamesandkate7 жыл бұрын
Robert Smith I drove one for a few days and have to say, it grew on me. It's definitely more refined than the older model, quieter and obviously goes further. I was aware that the q90 isn't performing to its max, so you probably made the right choice with your option. That's some really impressive range there, imagine it with a 60?? Thats would be some serious range 😊👍🏻

jur4x no keyless option, just remote, but as you said, not over engineered and not over complicated. Tradesman aren't going to be keen on complications

I'm not exactly a tradesman, but I like things simple. My car is 14reg Seat Ibiza 1,2l TSI manual. It has aircon and cruise control and automatic wipers and lights. But rear windows are not electric, and aircon is manual. And the only problem with it - it's not EV. My first car was Seat Mii (which actually is available as EV, but under slightly different name), and it was pretty basic as well. And you know, for £8000-9000 you can find quite a lot well-equipped second-hand cars out there. And I don't see anything wrong with a physical key that has to be inserted into "ignition" (yes, I know it's wrong terminology in case of electric car).
