How to replace the alternator on a Citroen Xsara with the 2.0 HDi engine.
This process should be the same on the 306, and generally most 2.0 HDi engined cars albeit some may have more access. The XUD should also be similar.
The power steering pump has to come out to remove the alternator so it is worthwhile buying a bottle of power steering fluid.

The alternators on some of these are Mitsubishi 6 phase 180A and can only be done from underneath. PS not all 2.0 HDI,s are the same you have DHX, DHY, XUD, based DW10 HDI,s

Hi my battery is flat and the key locks have seized. so I'm unable to get in the car, luckily we've been able to open the bonnet. so have been advised to charge from the alternator? would you know where to put the wires to charge using a battery charger. i would really appreciate your help. Thanks

I took my alternator off 2 years ago for the same reason but now I have to take it off again because the new pulley is eating through gates belts... I'm going to stick on a valeo pulley... Everything is in line but the Serpentine grooves have worn very sharp cutting into the belts... 1 each year ,

Hi there, check the tensioner pulleys also incase any have a slight amount of movement or play, not sure if the offending pulley can be rubbed down a bit with some sandpaper to make it less sharp, but if you have a softer pulley then it would be interesting to compare them.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV yes.... the problem was the alternator pulley is one of the aluminium ones... They wear down to a knife edge... which then continuously cuts into the belt

Unfortunatley i wont be making a clutch replacement video on this Xsara, its due to be replaced with a honda Jazz im working on at the moment (rust protection) then the xsara will be sold. It never had any clutch problems. I do have a video covering the clutch replacment on a 2.0 HDi 406 which had a dual mass flywheel. The process is mostly the same on the xsara except it has a simpler solid flywheel so that video may help

Hi, just about to take the power steering pump and Alternator of a car my friend has as it been in an accident and he's wonting to get rid of it, just looking at your video very handy as gives me some guidance. I would like to ask as removing these items how difficult is it to do the timing belt as taking this parts of gives more room as only requires removal of water pump as will change this at the same time can you give me any guidance as this was very useful thanks again.

Have just done this bit now belt is sqeeking loud and belt feels loose ? Could I have stretched the tensioner?

You've probably not tensioned the second manual tensioner. Take wheel off, pin the tensioner on the first hole that lines up when you begin releasing it. Slacken the nut on the manual tensioner just below (with the square or Allen hex hole inside it). Put it under a little tension and tighten the bolt back up. Remove the pin on the other tensioner and you're good.

Thousands thank you for this video, I stuck with my car behind polar circle in Norway and I am about to replace alternator which arrived from Germany in last days. My big problem is that I don't have garage and outside is a lot of snow and more is coming :-( . Maybe I will have opportunity to use one hall as a shouter and I will try to replace it during next weekend. Right now I went to dig my car out of snow and check if the motor parts matches yours and luckily YES ! . I hope I will find all necessary tools and keys for replacement and I wont screw anything :) . Maybe I will need some help, if so, I will ask in comments below. By the way... I want to replace auxiliary belt in the same time... is there something tricky or not ? ... My costs so far: remanufacture alternator from Germany 170€ (Norwegians don`t keep spare part in Norway warehouse) + customs clearance fee 46 € + deposit for returning of old alternator 60 € + post fee about 40 € DHL and if anyone ask why I want to do this work alone is because garage service ask only for work 800€ . Which I consider for a unbelievable crazy investment into 15 years old car :-) . One more time thanks a lot peugeotCitroen2CV !

Hi there Thanks for your message. Regarding the auxillary belt, there is nothing particularly tricky just have a copy of the routing diagram to hand as it will save a lot of time trying to figure out how its supposed to go on. Access is a bit tight on the Xsara but its not impossible to get to. Initially i thought €170 was high although new/refurbished alternators over here cost £110 which is about €125. I went to a scrapyard for this alternator which is why it only cost £25, although a local auto electrician will rebuild it for the same amount. Its definatley worth doing this job yourself if this job has been quoted at €800.. Definatley give it a go yourself.

Are you asking how to remove the injectors in a Xsara. Is it Petrol or Diesel, if diesel is it the XUD or later HDI? Generally with the injectors they are screwed directly into the head, if the injector feed lines are removed, the electrical connectors disconnected in the case of the HDI and the return pipes disconnected then a 27mm socket should be able to remove them. On the petrol engines i think the injectors are clipped into the inlet manifold in some way.

I did not remove the hidraulic pump just de alternator.

Energia Solar Celsat Fair enough, seems very tight to get it out with it in the way? I have to remove more parts generally to show the area clearly in the video

Job for tomorrow for me. So can this be done from under the car, dont fancy taking power sterring pump off lol. Not sure if the 1.6 petrol 2005 are any different

@@kieranmcgarvie2902 yeah I got a 2006 that I use as a run around the pump is at the top of the engine so you can to the alternator easy enough without doing what this guy did and take half his engine apart. Its 4 bolts just drops out dont even need to de tension the belts. When you undo the bolts the belt becomes slack anyway then just slide it out. Easy enough
