The top of the big 10 can compete with anybody any year. Whoever comes out of that conference on top is one of the best teams in the country. The middle of the big 10 generally get demolished by middling SEC teams. The bottom of the big 10 generally get demolished by the bottom of the SEC. Outside of the top few teams it’s truly not competitive at all.

They won't because those easy 4 wins are what allow them to have a majority of their teams in the top 25. Which then allows their top end teams to rise in the ranks quicker when they beat each other. It's a sure-fire way to get 1 or 2 teams in the playoffs.
