I really wish you had shown us how you strung it. I could use this on my Kenmore machines, but really would like to know how you tied it off, how tight it was, etc. Great video, though.

Its just anormal double knot , nothing special just tied it snug then used the tensioner to put more pressure , the pfaff is a fixed motor with an adjuster wheel , so tention can be adjusted if the sting stretches , dont overtighten though, you dont want to much stress on the motor bearings, hope that helps ....thanks for watching

Great video, great idea. I just saw that a guy is now making belts and he's got them on offer on Etsy for $35. And on top of that I just came across a whole discussion on a discussion board of a couple of guys who made these cleated belts out of either braided fishing line or builders line. One guy used the bottom pulley for spacing the cleats, installed them one by one and crimped them down with a pair of channel lock pliers. The pliers opened up so that he could grip both sides of the belt. The bottom pulley is steel so it didn't get damaged when he crimped down the cleats. I suspect that he crimped them down part way using the bottom pulley and then gave them a good squeeze when the belt turned to a position off the pulley. That would be a method to replace the timing belt in the middle of the machine without having to disassemble.

The timing belt is the one i do worry about , for 35 bucks id buy more then one , going to have to look and see , thanks for the tip . As for the motor belt i dont think cleats are really needed, i think they did a cleated belt so if it stretches over time it wont slip as well as the belt doesnt have to be tight so the motor bearings wont get stressed...just a theory. I had this machine sitting so long and thought hey lets try string , it worked for my treadle , it was fun to get to use this machine , did you get your pedal rewired ? I might fix mine now too ...

@@4486xxdawson Changing out the timing belt would mean dismantling the top of the machine and those belts are not available from what I can see. The motor belt however is available. Given your success with the motor belt, and given what I've read other people having done with DIY cleated belts, I'm no longer worried about the belts. I think your theory about the belts is right on the money. This type of belt was used extensively in industrial machines from what I can tell, so I think that Pfaff just went with that style. Thanks to your advice I got the pedal open to check out the wires and the capacitor. What a great thing to see those porcelain beads. Unique. I need to get to the hardware store to buy some wire, I'm thinking brown 16 gauge with SPT-2 insulation. Hoping to do that over the next few days and hoping they have what I need in stock.

@@4486xxdawson Just finished re-wiring the machine. It works beautifully. Surprising how quiet it is. Re-wiring the power cord takes a bit more doing than I envisioned, the connector at the machine end is quite a piece of work. You have to solder the connectors.

It does sound nice , cant believe i let it sit so long , the string worked better then i thought , what model of pfaff did you have ? Cant believe you would let one go , i dont see the old ones too often come on the market , maybe because the belts are so hard to get most people just shelf them . Thanks for watching....

I am sure I will be using this trick, for the belt. Thank you. Could you video document your modifications/improvements to the bobbin? I suspect I have some bobbins that may need the same treatment.

Nothing bugs me more then a machine just sitting there waiting to get working , i was thinking why not just try string since the original was just string with staples , what makes it work is there is a tensioner at the bottom of the machine that i was able to adjust to tighten the string , now i do have to keep in mind not to tighten too much so i dont put to much stress on the motor bearings so its a gamble i have to take in order to enjoy her , im still tinkering with it as we speak , its due for a full overhaul still . I plan on doing another video on her in the future...take care and happy new year to you as well ...
