Great teaching man, and I love that you use notation too. So many drummers today can't read sheet music, it's becoming a lost art.

I really like the way you showed whats really going on ! Its not just a lick! There are musical ideas! Your not making this rudimental in thinking ! Very well done.... I can use this one Idea just as a grounds for starting a solo a nd just with the way you broke this down, there are several motives that can be repeated and mixed and expanded on! Thank You Joe! Teaching us ways to think!

Hi Joe..Thanks for this, great video as usual!. I love your Vinnie licks explained videos. Your 'Don't ask me' Nik Kershaw fill video being one of my faves. Talking of Vinnie licks: I would pay a king's ransom to see you do a video explanation of my favourite Vinnie lick: (I'm surprised you've not done it already..there's so many, I know;) It's from the Allan Holdsworth album 'Secrets' and it's the unreal drum intro to the track 'Spokes'.

Cheers for the response Joe. My point was that I don't agree with the way the guy is playing it..I feel he's 'cracking a nut with a Sledgehammer'. I hear it as Vinnie playing the hi hat part with a splashed left foot?,some other people have pointed this out and I just wanted your take on it;) I think maybe I should make my own video of how I hear it eh?..;)) Keep up the great work Joe,It's so appreciated. I teach Drums as a peripatetic and your lessons inspire me in my lessons. Many thanks:)

I posted this - (put the youtube bit in front) v=UIHG46Qr7SE. I reckon that's what's going on with the extra hihat at the end. I didn't have the tom mics on when I recorded it.

Nice breakdown. I've listened to ur play repeated times, u need to adjust it more bit on the "paused" triplets on the 2nd bar. The feel was just slightly different with the original. The snare on the 2nd beat, feels like it is too rushy for me... :) But overall idea is already correct, thx...

ps..You'd also be settling a running argument I have with a guy here on youtube who's made a video of his version of the 'Spokes' intro(check it out). I've been debating with him that Vinnie plays the hi-hat part with his foot splashed open during the fill, while he says it's played with a stick..please can you back me up on this one Joe?. I can't ask Vinnie himself!..so I'm asking you, because I know you have great ears and an awareness of musical nuance and detail . cheers:)

I'm convinced that drummers are actually aliens. I'm a guitarist with fifty years experience. I can sight read music. And if you hand me any musical instrument, with a little time alone with it I can coax sounds out of it that won't cause people to run away in horror. But drums? Forget it. I've played with some very good drummers over the years, some who taught drumming as well as playing in bands. They tried their best with me, but no way could I ever get the hang of it. I can get hands going okay, but feet? Nope. It all falls apart when I try to combine feet and hands. Aliens. They're all aliens. 😁
