As much as Mikey Madison's performance is the centerpiece of Anora, I still think Demi Moore has the narrative and moment going for her. And honestly, I'm still hoping for that Moore win, because that performance feels like lightning in a bottle; it would be a win that would be both fully deserved, and also work as an acknowledgement victory for Moore's career.

Well deserved Sean! My favorite Baker film is still ‘The Florida Project’. I don’t recall the last time I was looking forward to the Oscars! Keep the chaos coming. I’m a huge Demi fan but saw ‘I’m Still Here’ yesterday and Fernanda slayed it beginning to end.

I saw I'm Still Here, and believe the screenplay was its best trait. Fernanda was a bit miscast, looking too old to be the mom of such young kids. She hit her stride later, but the earlier scenes were not well played. Also, she has no "moment," like Demi's mirror scene - which is by many people's account THE scene of 2024 in cinema. That said, it is great to see the attention on Brazil's worthy film industry, and its stars.

But on the other hand, the AI affected only about 1% of Adrien's performance. It's probably not enough to merit disqualification.

Thanks Brian for your great reaction and insight into PGA and DGA! Anora remains our frontrunner after all the drama over the past few months. Things feel right again thankfully, immediately after CCA BP was announced actually i screamed so loud for my own reaction video, the microphone cut off! Now for my in-depth in analysis: 1) Ok, so my thoughts for BAFTA in response to DGA/PGA wins for Anora, it might be possible. to win but they haven't awarded a "comedy" film which lead to Best Picture since SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, unless you count THE ARTIST which was a very "weak" year technically. In terms those that went on to NOT win BP, then LA LA LAND (which previously was leading that season all around) and then before that THE FULL MONTY. 2) BAFTA ignored Everything Everywhere All at Once, CODA (not comedy, but much less serious than Power of the Dog), Green Book (categorically according to GG), and even BIRDMAN. So I am not quite sure about it's chances at BAFTA. 3) Look at what BAFTA has awarded over the years: Oppenheimer, All Quiet on the Western Front, 1917, The Power of the Dog, Roma, The Revenant, The King's Speech, The Hurt Locker, Atonement, The Queen, Brokeback Mountain, The Pianist. With the only BP winner there being last year, Oppenheimer. and then a british film The King's Speech and then randomly The Hurt Locker which I was shocked by! 4) The only film that feels "similar" to ANORA in terms of a super fun, crazy narrative that was more of a "dramedy" is SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE from the past 20 years. Danny Boyle is British though. 5) as for SAG, I think it's between Anora and Wicked, with a possible Conclave upset. Idk rn I'm predicting Wicked there I don't know why! I wanna see what BAFTA does first to cement my prediction, tbh. I6) n terms of DGA, I still think Corbet has a chance. But Sean Baker just feels more "right" at the Oscars. The Original Screenplay/Director categories are becoming extremely weird to predict now, for me. I7) I don't think Mikey Madison is going to win Best Actress at OSCARS or anywhere else except possibly the Indie Spirit Awards. It just feels like Demi Moore is going to sweep, although I know Mikey has been campaigning hardcore in the UK. Maybe I will be wrong. But at BAFTA I see a split between Mikey and Marianne (as at CCA), and at SAG between Mikey and Cynthia Erivo, possibly.

I watched Anora yesterday and it was great. The directing was fine and good, but someone has to explain to me how the direction in Anora beats movies like Dune or Brutalist? The story and performances in Anora were great, but the direction is not what I found to be the greatest achievement in the movie. Did I miss something??

i don't know if this helps but to me it's like with books. i can read a perfectly crafted historical or science fiction epic and think yep, that was masterful. then i read a contemporary book with first person narration that is explosive on the page and has a gut punch of ending. it makes me feel more. films work for different people for different reasons. i really responded to anora and a lot of the film's power is in the direction and the script. fully deserved recognition for sean baker 💖

I'm definitely on Team Anora, although I haven't seen I'm Still Here yet. In fact, I am such a fan of Anora, that after watching it, I decided to stream anything I could find by Sean Baker (Criterion is a good source). He is the master of the gut punch ending! Just finished Starlet last night - an unappreciated gem. It stars Mariel Hemingway's daughter Dree and an elderly woman "discovered" at the tender age of 85, and of course, Karren Karagulian plays a supporting role.

If Demi doesn't win Best Actress we will riot in the streets of L.A.!😮 I still think that not alot of Academy voters are sitting through The Brutalist and I think The Substance has a bigger opportunity especially, with the controversy over EP. Well, The Oscars should be pretty interesting this year. I haven't seen Anora, but I'm looking forward to it. It sounds a lot more like my kind of movie than Conclave or The Brutalist. I really hope that either it or The Substance wins big at The Oscars.

Well I guess I ought to rewatch Anora. I saw it back in November and my first impression of it was positive and I've grown to really appreciate Sean Baker's style. He's certainly an acquired taste, and I think in general, this Best Picture lineup isn't your grandma's Best Picture lineup. That said, there are still movies I like better and that resonated with me more personally. In any case, I'm tickled to see Anora suddenly emerge as the David to Emilia Perez's Goliath. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I was blown away by "Nickel Boys" on so many levels. So far NB and "Sing Sing" are my favorite movies of 2024.

A curious reversal: like you, at the start of awards season I figured Anora would end up with Actress & Original Screenplay at the Oscars, while losing Picture & Director. Now it looks like the opposite may happen. Anora's not my #1 film of the year but it's easily my favorite among the award contenders. I generally prefer it when my choice doesn't win (as it means avoiding the predictable wave of post-Oscar hate), as long as the film that does win is also a film that I really like too. As I'm tepid on The Brutalist and The Substance, I'm hoping for Anora to win (though I'd be fine with Conclave, but that seems very unlikely now).

Looking at the big industry-centered precursor awards (Globes, BAFTA, DGA, PGA & SAG) and how well they've predicted the Oscars, every Best Picture since 1996 has won with at least one of them, and usually more than one (the average is three). Five films have swept all five, before winning the Oscar: American Beauty (1999), The Return of the King (2003), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), Argo (2012) & Oppenheimer (2023). At the opposite end, six films have taken Best Picture while winning just one of those precursor awards: Million Dollar Baby (2004, won DGA), Crash (2005, won SAG), The Departed (2006, won DGA), Spotlight (2015, won SAG), Moonlight (2016, won Globe) and Parasite (2019, won SAG). I'm still waiting for the SAG Ensemble prize to be handed out in two weeks before becoming sure of Anora taking the Oscar; as the above paragraph shows, if a movie pulls a surprise Oscar victory it can usually be spotted by a SAG win.

Well well - things looked all sewn up for Oscar's night. But as we've all seen, things can change quite suddenly. I always look forward to the Oscars but the last years, big suprises have been few and far between. I'm really excited about the Oscars now, especially with Anora doing so well at these two awards. It would be great to see Anora win at least one of these big awards. A while back I was thinking Anora for Original Screenplay, The Brutalist for Film and Dune part 2 for director, but that's not happening obviously. I hope Anora does well - it deserves to, it's a special movie with a dynamite performance from Madison.
