Good stuff Rick. "For No One" is another w that melancholy vibe. Fun factoid -- back then, no one had "stereo systems." For most regular people their 'record player' played only in Mono. The first record I bought with my own meney was Beatles 65.... $1.99 for Mono, and a whopping $2.49 for Stereo. And even if I had the extra .50 cents ... I didn't ,... I wouldn't have heard the difference cause the family's 'console' record player could only produce Mono.

I think AHDN is the perfection of their colaboration in writing and singing. Most of the songs on are John's but Paul always put in some ideas as well and you can hear it. For me it is still the best Beatles album, the only pity: why 13 songs? They should have included This Boy as well, as it appears in the movie as Ringo's Theme. Why did they leave it out?

Finally, I have the opportunity to say... "I'll Be Back" is (likely) my favorite Beatles song. No kidding. Heartbreaking story about Lennon's dysfunctional relationship with his dad; two amazing bridges, lean production, perfectly sung and played in 2 1/2 minutes. "I thought that you would realize that, if I ran away from you, that you would want me, too, but I got a big surprise." Maybe I love this track is because it is, in fact, so different. I never get tired of listening to it because it changes about every 20 seconds. Anyway, it's good to get this sentiment out there. ☺A+

Another interesting thing about I’ll Be Back: In the verse, someone (George, or maybe Paul overdubbed) holds the high E harmony throughout the entire thing. A fascinating song! In Revolution In The Head, Ian McDonald describes it like this: “The most unorthodox thing Lennon had yet written. It has no real chorus, being constructed as a twelve-bar verse in two equal sections (shortened to six bars in its final reprise), a six and a half bar bridge, and a nine and a half bar middle featuring a characteristic chromatic descent. Despite all this, and as so often with Lennon’s more bewildering contributions, the whole thing rings totally true, being his deepest emotional expression to date”

The two part harmony is a classic representation of the Lennon McCartney blend. Not to mention the guitar work between John on rhythm and George playing lead just shows how great their ability to compliment each other really was. Massive inspiration to our band from lyrics and attitude to experimentation and arranging.
@Maltloaflegrande
@Maltloaflegrande 14 сағат бұрын
I agree the harmonies are fab, but It's not just John and Paul. George is in there sandwiched between them and in fact is louder than Paul meaning that on the surface it sounds two-part, but that beautiful McCartney top line is like a polished finish. They were ludicrously good.

As much as I love them, their amazing catalog and etc...while the harmonies here are (as usual) Great but... where exactly is the outstanding to the point of being noteworthy LEAD GUITAR WORK interplaying with the rhythm SO IMPRESSIVELY that it stands out as a "highlight" example of John and George's Rythm/Lead interplay? Come on man... I get it. It's the Beatles. They are legendary geniuses. But if you think there is any SERIOUSLY NOTEWORTHY LEAD GUITAR WORK in this song... 🤔...🧐...I'm looking for it man... I have listened to it many times...can't find it anywhere... the lead work in this song is literally nothing more than a few arpeggios and single notes plucked out of what is basically a case of BOTH OF THEM PLAYING RYTHM GUITAR. The beauty in the interplay of their guitars is in differences of how they BOTH approach playing Rythm guitar; as there is no real significant "lead" guitar work in the song. I don't want to be rude or anything but this is just a matter of fact. There is nothing subjective here... if I am wrong please let me know WHERE EXACTLY IN THE SONG DOES THIS IMPRESSIVE "LEAD GUITAR" WORK HAPPEN?
@Maltloaflegrande
@Maltloaflegrande 12 сағат бұрын
@@coreyjsilva3534 He likes the way the guitar parts work together and that's pretty much what he says. I don't think it's unreasonable to label John's playing as "rhythm" and George's as "lead", but I can't see anything in what was written as implying that there's some monster shredding about to be served up. Some of the best lead guitar is basically layering over the chord work with the occasional counter melody tossed in.

Since they didn’t have much, if any, formal training they were probably comfortable just trying out a bunch of random stuff and seeing what sounded good. I respect your opinion, but I personally don't see how they can be compared. Beyond their respective personal stamps, they both had excellent composing and lyric-writing skills as well as arranging skills (by that I mean the chord progressions they devised to show their melodies off to maximum effect). If Lennon has one obvious (to me anyway) superior trait, it's his quality control lyric-wise: McCartney's bar was just as high, but he let himself down many times, especially once he didn't have his mate there to veto the dross, but that doesn't mean that Macca wasn't just as able.

@@Maltloaflegrandeexactly, you nailed it. Paul on his own without Lennon wrote some atrocious lyrics way too often. To the point where it diminished his music which was still usually good. But for chord progressions I would take Lennon as he brought out the unexpected much more often. Paul was more traditional but with beautiful melodies. Definitely a match made in heaven those 2, or specially those 4, 5 with George Martin

I've been listening to The Beatles, my entire life, and I never really paid that close attention to that three against four strumming pattern! I literally had to go to the song in my music collection, and listen for it, and I'll be darned... It's in there, buried under all the other rhythm going on, but if you know to listen for it, you can't un-ear it. 42 years old, been listening to The Beatles for probably 39 of those years, and I'm still finding "new" nuance in their music, almost every time I listen to them.

You say it’s only had 16M plays but that’s kind of irrelevant. It’s been playing in my head since I first heard it. I was 6 when it came out.

The use of that C natural (flat 13) in the melody ("I'll") on the E7 chord is a really nice surprise as well.

Being a lifelong fan of The Fabs, this is one of my all time favorites from what I consider their early years. The sound of the acoustic guitars always gave me goosebumps and I don't know why. They sound so great, But then you have the vocal harmonies on top and it's just gorgeous. Love that you're covering this tune. Maybe you can explain my fascination.

Another interesting fact about "I'll Be Back" is that, according to the Anthology 1 CD, it was supposed to be a waltz in 6/8, much like "Baby's In Black". But when they got to the second bridge, John deemed it "too hard to sing", and then they switched it to a straight 4/4.

If my knowledge serves me well, the parallel shift between major and minor chords originates from traditional English folk songs, which were quite common in the 17th and 18th centuries. Over time, the theory of European music evolved to include the concept of relative major and minor chords.

Lennon said he came up with this song by reworking the chords from "Runaway" by Del Shannon. I never realized that it doesn't have a chorus! Absolutely brilliant.
