A slip saved my ass in real life yesterday. On takeoff I didn't like the way the engine sounded so I decided to make a traffic pattern and come back to land. I ended up too high. Normally in that situation I would go around, but with the engine trouble I really wanted to be on the ground. I used a slip to lose the altitude without gaining airspeed, and I was back on glideslope and made a safe landing.

I've been using a sick with a twist for my yaw control for a few years. After seeing this, I think it's time to get some rudder pedals. Excellent video sir, much obliged!

If you have a racing wheel with pedals you can use that aswell. its much cheaper than rudder pedals

I used to fly gliders and we were taught sideslipping, in case we were in a glider with no airbrakes. Obviously in a glider, you can't hit the throttle and 'go around', so you always come in with tons of height and do a much steeper approach than a powered aircraft. Although it obviously works in the sim, I don't think you get any real idea of what it feels like. We used to kick the rudder pedal in fully and control the slip with the stick...looking down the wing that was going toward the ground. A great feeling once you'd mastered it.

You're a very good teacher. Thanks for the explanation.

Good stuff. Enjoyed your video, very well presented. Hope to see more of these. Thank you.

Great video. I slip to final very often when I fly a glider real world. Great way to bring out the "extra" spoilers if I come in too high (often due to concerns about the winds). My instructor assures me that an aircraft in a forward slip is less likely to stall than one in forward flight. Too much inside rudder is death, but outside rudder is somehow much safer he thinks. I keep trying to draw that out in my mind, but honestly I'm not sure I believe him. Either wing could stall, I think. This topic usually crosses my mind at 300AGL short final, fully embracing the forward slip :D. I then just make sure the nose stays pointed downwards :) Loving the channel. Keep 'em coming!

Awesome, I had no idea this was even a thing. Thanks for all your vids. What does a cross controlled stall mean exactly and why is it so dangerous?

@P Gatcomb At 6:52, that was as is commonly known as the Gimli Glider, a 767 that ran out of fuel!!!

Thanks for the explanation, I've gotten to use this technique already for Neofly!

Would it be possible to revisit the traffic pattern on your videos? The one you have is very basic and would be nice to understand more about the names used (base leg, etc.) and well, just go in depth. I know I can watch other videos but I like your style. Thanks.

When I first started playing fs2020, I was unintentionally slipping the aircraft thinking I was in a crosswind. Turns out, I wasn't in a crosswind after all. Didn't even know what slipping was until now

Righ rudder and left aileron down you said? Is it not right rudder and left aileron up? Crossed inputs?
@claudest-gelais84564 жыл бұрын
@Matt D'Rat He should have said left "wing" down. So, you're right!!! Used to do it quite often in real life, the best way to loose altitude quickly!!!

Can you do it in a Boeing? Real story search it up
@Jojos252 жыл бұрын
It's not really recommended in airliners as you can blow the engines out due to the excessive amount of dirty air generated by the slip.

@@Jojos25 Yeah but what if you're out of fuel due to a conversion error and you don't have any engine power?
