No joke, Tomb Raider gave me a sense of mystery, dread, danger and thrill when I was a kid that nothing else gave me, and it still gives me to this day, thanks to the tombs feeling like truly nobody had stepped into them for thousands of years, and absolutely amazing music that exhalted the gameplay and level design.

@@GameDawgsthe remasters are amazing but you have to keep in mind how more isolating the original game was. There were no light sources like in the remaster where to make it more realistic they opened up parts on the ceiling of caves and tombs. It really was very creepy. Needless to say, the remaster was well worth my money. I would have paid 70€ for them that's how amazing they are

Hey, I liked the character too lol. It was awesome as a chick playing a chick and feeling like I became her with every move she made and every problem I solved. Her design was no more exploitative than the comic book heroines of yesteryear. And I liked that she wasn’t even really the hero, just the one who landed on top every time lol.

I've talked about it a lot before with friends, but Tomb Raider's subtle horror is incredible. The focus on ambiance, unique musical crescendos when a certain point is hit or a discovery is made, traps and nefarious creatures that could be around any corner alongside the sheer desolate landscape. Being left with only the sound of your steps echoing as you traverse monstrous levels really tops the whole thing off. You have no idea what you'll encounter, and you have to keep pushing ahead despite the constant looming threat of death. I've always thought about doing something, but I'm so glad I never did because there's no way I could of conveyed it in the manner that you did. The transitions especially? Dear gosh, they're unreal. You feel the amount of time and effort put into this project, and I thank you so very much for that.

This is seriously top-drawer quality. I've been playing Tomb Raider for 22 years now and I've never seen anything remotely close to honoring and acknowledging these gargantuan, beautifully unforgiving lost worlds. So often I've tried to explain, though not as eloquently as you, my undying love for the original series but often falls flat due to people in question preferring more action-dominated titles. Tomb Raider is just further straying from its source and it just seems like devs and suits don't believe the original character and her content could translate to strong sales... But I'm really optimistic with a resurgence of classic Tomb Raider content being highlighted online will eventually bring this Lara Croft back. Thanks for making this, you did a great job!

WOW. This is absolute perfection. It perfectly lays out why the classic Tomb Raider games are my favorite video games of all-time. The sense of isolation, the unsettling tone that's established at the very beginning, the complexity of the puzzles, the unforgiving nature of the traps, the rich mood and atmosphere that comes through despite the pixelated textures, the unnerving ambient sounds/music, the fact that the game rewards you for exploring, the complete lack of hints OF ANY KIND, and the systematic way Core Design teaches players to learn from their mistakes and become a better player as the game goes on. Classic Tomb Raider is absolutely a cerebral experience; you're forced to use your brain if you want any chance of succeeding at the game. Those elements are what made Tomb Raider so unique, so scary, and so much fun. They're what I've missed from Tomb Raider since Tomb Raider: Legend was released, and something I thought would never return after the 2013 reboot. Some of those elements made a much-needed return in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which was largely developed by Eidos Montreal. My hope is that the developers (especially those at Crystal Dynamics if they continue running point on the series) see this video and finally realize what their Tomb Raider titles have largely missed, misunderstood, and ignored. Anyway, consider me a new fan of yours, PGunnii. It's always a pleasure to come across someone who truly GETS Tomb Raider and looks beyond the character design, outdated graphics, and primitive control scheme to see what a one-of-a-kind gem the classic games in the series were. Haha, sorry for writing a whole freaking essay; I can talk Tomb Raider for hours!

I was pretty impressed by the Underworld and later Anniversary still. They were my first entries ever to this series, never played the originals - but came to watch this video anyway _because_ these are the exact same vibes that I got from Anniversary! These weird almost incomprehensible underground cities and structures, eeriness and surrealism, shitting my pants over the dinos etc haha. So I'd say they did a pretty good job with the remake, if I was nodding to this video THE WHOLE TIME like yup, yup, yuuuuppp having played only the remake ❤

@AgentX7k2 Yep. And as you play you get a hang of her jumping distances and heights so that you can judge by looking at the height of a platform or its distance from you whether to do a hop, a grabbing hop, a running jump or a grabbing running jump. Meanwhile in the newer games you roughly aim at the lighter rocks and hope and that you jumped at the right time and that she grabs onto them.

It's almost a movement simulator, unrealistic in many ways of course but the player is responsible for all movement, as opposed to just "pushing left" and the computer fills in all the gaps. Not saying it's better but i think it's actually a really impressive system, there are even animations for walking up and down steps, in a world years before inverted kinematics came and, again, filled in the gaps.

Great video! My biggest annoyance with modern adventure games is the auto grabbing... Or just pressing forward and X all of the time, Takes away from the overall gameplay and immersion! Tomb raider was almost a survival sim for its time with all of the separate movements as well as hints of horror and of course action adventure. Classic style TR can't be touched. Uncharted should be it's own thing not a gameplay style

I think the only way the series has a shot at going back to its roots is if a different dev team gets its hands on the IP. The closest we'll probably get with CD is probably a TR2 remake in the vein of RE2/FF7. (5 years ago I would have said Anniversary/REmake; but I don't think the staff at CD would be able to resist the urge to significantly remix and modernize the game)

I struggled to find something reminding me of OG TR, and the closest to the feeling I had was when playing Quake and the maps for single player Quake 1 by the community. Firstly, MAJOR props for the editing and work that went into this video to get custom footage. Absolutely loved it!! I always wondered if anyone else felt the same way about this game!! I first played Tomb Raider in 2010 when I was ten years old on the Playstation 1 console. At the time, I noticed that no matter where I was or in what level or what I was doing within the game, it left me with this constant feeling of loneliness. It makes you feel isolated without really having to try too hard. There are no humans around, no companionship to lighten the mood. No helpful comments or any dialogue from Lara while playing other than a rude "NO" when you use the wrong key or her scream as she dies. There is no ambiance like the buzzing of bugs or the chirping of birds. It's dead and quiet. For that reason, it feels more jarring to come across packs of living creatures somehow thriving in these environments. As a kid playing this, I'd overthink everything lol. How did the animals get there, what is their lives like there? How do they survive? And somehow, that also adds to the strangely supernatural feeling this game had. And then you would get to places like the garden in Palace Midas and start to feel kinda safe and at peace there, at least until you climbed on top of Midas' hand for a rude awakening lol. Where the environment and enemies weren't freaking you out, the music certainly was. Nathan McCree did a phenomenal job composing for this game. This game scared the shit out of me as a kid, and admittedly now as a 21 year-old, it still scares the shit out of me. It is really, truly a masterpiece for what it was able to achieve. Tomb Raider II did not carry the same feeling for me. With more human enemies around than animals, it lost its charm of loneliness. It had open skies and a more comfortable feeling to its overall design compared to the first game. All those feelings and the ones you mentioned are definitely present in the Floating Islands level, though. Enemies appearing out of nowhere, an unusual and unfamiliar level design with the new danger of falling into oblivion, coupled with the ever-present ambiance music where you can hear what sounds like whistling or a whip. Its unfamiliarity and my inability to place what was making the sound freaked me out lol Absolutely awesome video!

The remake was an insult, not to just Tomb Raider, but Lara herself. Heights didn't bother her in the classics, but she whines and moans about climbing a tower in 2013's. Lara was made to be your beacon of confidence, you are her guide, she trusts you to make the decisions. And she never complained before. Ever.

Tomb Raider Anniversary 2007 was the remake of 1996. 2013 was a reboot. I enjoyed all Tomb Raiders (mostly) except for Angel of Darkness and did not care for Shadow much. It just bothers me that there are 3 timelines so the continuity is messed up which kinda reminds me of Spider-Man, but I guess they went with the multiverse thing.

KZbin just recommended me this video and I gotta say: WOW! The amount of effort into all the editing is insane, let alone all the texture and model work for those set pieces, let alone the script you had to write and record! I really enjoyed the way you verbalized your thoughts and the way you "romanticized" all those memories. As a 22 year old myself, I grew up into loving gaming as a whole because of the PS1, thanks to my older brothers, and I definitely relate to what you're saying. The mystery of putting in the CD for the first time, hearing and seeing that classic PS1 boot screen, not really knowing what to expect, the resolution and primitive graphics made everything just a little bit abstract, enough to make you feel like you were in some kind of fever dream. The expressions in the characters faces and those FMVs also made it a bit eerie with just how uncanny everything looked. It just felt like somehting wasn't totally right! I remember being super creeped out by a lot of games because of that (my older brothers still make fun of me for some of those moments, haha). I feel like you absolutely put into images and words what I remember so fondly about those times, the sense of mystery, secrecy and discovery that shrouded the PS1! Looking forward to your next videos, you totally deserve more views, not only because of the sheer amount of effort you put into this, but by the quality of the content itself!

I'm a fan of Tomb Raider and I don't know how I forgot subscribing to your channel when I saw your Petscop video (which was really good btw), now I regret I didn't before. I know that maybe I'm being so biased because I love the Tomb Raider games made by Core Design, but for me this video is a f***ing MASTERPIECE 👏👏 How it's edited (it's so beautiful and pleasing to the eye), the jokes (which I think they're cute with the original low-poly 3D models) and the detailed analysis you make, and what I think is most important : the fact that your videos show how really passionate you are about the games you choose to discuss about. The quality of this is mindblowing, no wonder you take a long time to release a new one. I really wish that if Square Enix ever decided to remake / remaster TR 1, TR 2, TR 3 or TR 4 that they took a look at this video, you perfectly nailed what Core's TR games were about in the 90's P.S: Btw, I'm glad that KZbin's algorithm did something good by recommending me this video

I played through Tomb Raider again a few years ago and all the horrors that my childhood brain tried to bury away rose again. The t-rex scared me but childhood me was completely terrified of the mummies and.. whatever the fuck those last things are. One of the scariest moments in all the Tomb Raiders for me, however, has to be in the second game, with the big stompy guy with blades for arms (and 6 arms) chasing you around the room.

...the original Tomb Raider was special; I had that shining pearl in my possession, as part of my Sega Saturn library of gold, and man, was the thing constantly spinning inside that black box of magic! ...coming from the Mega Drive, to the absurdity of what 32bit rendering and its possibilities had to offer, was... Extraordinary! My mind was blow to say least, and experiencing such at the time's quite difficult to put onto words; Maybe nearly indescribable... really; As for the game; The thought put into its level design was of such high tier and intricacie for such an early 3d game it's ridiculous. Tank controls, for one, ridiculed by many these days, were too, part of what made my jaw drop back then; Movement felt like it had real weight to it; Which ozed a striking realism I had never before experienced in a game. Actions such as climbing, holding onto or grabin' things required a combination of button presses at specific moments; Its interactivity made me feel in control; I felt in control! ...but in a way modern automated 3d extravaganzas cannot replicate. Admitidily, they were not fit for combat, and it shows; Reason I could never have enjoyed the second game nearly as much; The sequel was good in its own ways, that much is true, but, for it's detriment, focused a lot on something its controls were never meant for, and worst, most combat in the sequel was done against hitscaners... Tomb Raider 1, from 1996, was that special, it was that good! ...and still; Not much can hold a candle to it; No matter how big the names attached, nor how fancy the visual shine... Now, is the game a product of its time? Yes, in many ways it might as well be; And that's good, as in current days, such could never be replicated... not now, probably not in the next decade... ...the trilogy that came after, the classics, starting with Legend, was fun in its own right too; Combat heavy an simpler in design, but did its job, and only got better with each sequel. ...2013's reboot and the tryhard fest that came after in the other hand; Are but absolute disgraces to the originals legacy, and the new characterisation of Lara is quite the reflection of that; The original's the definition of someone whose a natural at being her self, what one's capable of and making the most out of it! ...as for the newer interaction? ...but a twisted version of what that idea is, a reflection of what someone that's not such, pretends, way to hard, to be... It's forced and an annoyance... I honestly dislike the modern version of the character; It is bad, molded by a generation brainwashed by terrible ideas and ideologies, insecurities, and all the bs, plaging this industry and many others... ...and don't get me started on the abusurd, brutaly watered down level design, and near automated, fail safe gameplay, what a catastrophie this franchise turned into...

I am glad to be not the only one disliking the Reboot. They just should had stoped with the first one. THe original game had a manual explaining Laras Badass origins on two sides. Surviving in Himalaya, learning all that stuff by her self, getting disowned by her family and so had to survive on her own in the wild AND modern world. Not that pampered Lara Croft cosplayer.

One thing tho... not everyone goes straight into the story mode. I don't know if the Saturn version or other ports of the game had it, but the PS1 Tomb Raider had the tutorial mode in Lara's Mansion. I know I did that first and learned how to play that way before going into the scary lonely cave. But good job pointing out how the actual game in TR1 differs so much from the sexy persona and reputation the series had built in the mainstream and by the way the current devs wrongly talk about the old games. I love how the silence only gives way to music whenever Lara comes upon something significant. Personally, my vote for series that is scary but isn't meant to be goes to Metroid, but yeah this game has unsettled/ruffled me unexpectedly a bit here and there for sure. Some of the animal encounters scared me a lot in the early days, especially the gorillas, lions, dinos, and of course T-Rex. And if you don't already have it, you can probably develop a fear of heights from this game. Probably the scariest thing I remember from TR1 is if Lara accidentally touches the Midas statue... I never wanted to touch it again, so in subsequent playthroughs I feel the need to be extra careful when I enter that room. And yeah, modern "Tomb Raider" and "Lara Croft" are like totally completely different things now compared to their origin.

Holy smokes, you did a fantastic job on this video essay. I'm so glad there are still people out there that can understand why the original Tomb Raider is such a classic. It was about the isolation and you getting to explore every inch on your own. It actually felt as if you were doing the exploration yourself. Sometimes you were wondering if you were still going the right way or solving the puzzle correctly, but those moments of doubt made the progress in the game that much sweeter. It made you feel so accomplished and like a frikken genius when you finally figured out what goes where. The newer "Tomb Raider" games never felt like Tomb Raider to me. You didn't even need to raid tombs, cause they are optional ffs. If you make the very thing your whole game concept is centered around optional, you've got problems. I didn't mind them telling the origin story of Lara in the 2013 version, but she never evolved out of that whiny, insecure, hyperventilating stage. Do you think that the 1996 Lara would be pressed against the jungle wall covered in mud, praying the jaguar would just leave her alone, like in Shadow of the tomb raider? She would probably do a graceful leap from its head, do a back flip and turn mid air and pop him with her dual 9mm. OMG I miss the old Lara 😢

I am such a die-hard fan of the original Tomb Raider, and I have to say: this is one of (if not THE) best, most spot-on analyses of what made Tomb Raider so special. I’m still a fan, 23 years later - and it’s due to the formulaic approach to isolation, confidence, mystery, and thrills with which Core created the original. I’m stunned by your level of detail and I love your love for this title. Thank you so much for giving this to us. Well done.
