Sublime Frequencies is honored to present the first-ever retrospective of Phương Tâm, the groundbreaking Saigon teenager who became one of the first singers to perform and record rock & roll in 1960s Vietnam.
By chance in early 2020, Hannah Hà (USA) learned that her mother, Phương Tâm, had once been a famous young singer, performer, and recording artist at the heart of Saigon’s music scene in the early 1960s. The family had heard some mention of their mom as a singer at the time, but the extent of her legacy and the many songs she had recorded came as a big surprise. Further investigations soon led Hannah to producer Mark Gergis, compiler of Saigon Rock and Soul (2010, Sublime Frequencies), enlisting him to join her on a journey of discovery and recovery. The result is this essential document of Phuong Tam’s brief but prolific career, and at the same time, reuniting the long-lost music with its singer.
The unique strengths and qualities of Phương Tâm’s voice, coupled with her commanding stage presence, had swiftly elevated her to top billings on Saigon’s nightclub stages. Parallel to the brutality and uncertainty of an already protracted war, South Vietnam’s music and recording industry was developing at a rapid pace in the early 1960s. Globally, musical trends with wild, ephemeral dance crazes were being thought up weekly; the twist, hully gully, the mashed potato - none of them a problem for Phương Tâm. She soon caught the attention of Saigon’s leading recording companies and composers (Y Vân, Khánh Băng, Trường Hải, Thanh Sơn, Y Vũ, and Mặc Thế Nhân, among others). Her energy translated unsurprisingly well in the studio, backed by electric guitars, contrabass, drums, lush brass sections, saxophone, piano, organ, and rich backing vocals.
Between 1964-1966, Phương Tâm would record almost 30 known tracks, released by the three main record companies in Saigon. The teenage starlet became a vital centerpiece of pop music of the time, and one of the very first singers to perform and record rock and roll (known locally as nhạc kích động, or, action music) - though as you’ll hear, she could also transform a jazz ballad into something otherworldly. While these musical styles were undeniably influenced by contemporary trends worldwide, the musicians and composers worked to localize the sounds, incorporating linguistic adaptations, lyrical content, and past artistic traditions into something all their own.
In 1966, as Saigon’s music scene continued to evolve and escalate, Phương Tâm walked away from her singing career without looking back - marrying the man she loved and beginning the next rich chapter of her life. But her recorded output had laid the stylistic groundwork for the following generations of singers, and many of the songs she first sang would later be further popularized by others. Her impactful, but short-spanning career has seen her legacy remain historically understated until now.
Due to the lack of master tapes or documentation from pre-1975 Vietnam, and the scarcity of records and tapes that had survived the war, it was difficult to grasp the extent of Phương Tâm’s discography. A collective effort was required in sourcing materials and information to compile this record, involving key collectors and producers internationally (Jan Hagenkötter - Saigon Supersound, Cường Phạm, Adam Fargason, Khoa Hà - granddaughter of composer Y Vân, and researcher Jason Gibbs). As the veils of history were slowly lifted, the genuine thrill was witnessing Phương Tâm herself, hearing these songs for the first time in over 50 years - sometimes since the day she recorded them.
At the heart of this project is a family story - Hannah Hà’s dedication to recovering and sharing her mother’s musical legacy is helping put Phương Tâm back on center stage after 55 years. But it is also a story that adds critical context to the fragmented understanding of Vietnamese popular culture during the 20th century, particularly after so much has been lost to war and dislocation.

The music has been forgotten. Few older Vietnamese like Kich Dong Nhac, action music, preferring the slow ballads or Bolero. The young Vietnamese living abroad and in Vietnam don’t know this music existed. That is why it was critical that this album was released with the writings, lyrics, images and context so we can understand a little bit of Vietnam’s vibrant musical past…And Argentina rock music ROCKS.

Có lẽ mình là thế hệ trẻ duy nhất ở đây, khi mình nghe đc album tuyển tập này, mình mới biết đc âm nhạc nước ta rất đa dạng kể cả cho thời gian, chiến tranh, chính trị nhiều khi ngăn cản dòng nhạc này phát triển (bây h thì bỏ r)... .Nếu thời điểm bây giờ đây các dòng nhạc sôi động hoặc mang tính đại chúng cao (trừ bolero) đc gọi chung là V-pop và nó đang phát triển mạnh cả về chất lượng - phong cách và cách thu âm gần như của thế giới thì từ trước đó ở miền Nam đã có cái gọi là "Kích động nhạc". Đây dường như là tiếng nói của thời đại, của tình yêu, của tuổi trẻ và cả nhưng niềm đau mãnh liệt. Dù là cả 2 dòng âm nhạc cách nhau tận 60 năm nhưng với mình khi nghe lại thì nó lại rất hay và có những nét riêng của nó Nhạc của cô Phương Tâm đây nghe rất Mỹ, đặc sệt lối đánh và văn hóa trong những năm 60's của Hoa Kỳ nhưng lại phù hợp với dân ta với những lời tiếng Việt rất hay ho và uyển chuyển. Mình đến từ Việt Nam 🇻🇳 và mình biết Album này thông qua Spotify và Apple Music

Nhờ xem Jimmy show mà mình không ngờ thần tượng Ca Si Phương Tâm của mình là đây. Mấy chục năm về trước gặp chị thường xuyên mà không biết, chi biết chị là vợ BS Ha Xuân Du vì các con của mình được BS Du chăm sóc từ nhỏ đến lớn. Sau này có đi party vài lần có gặp vợ chồng BS và chị đã lên hát rất nhiều bài ngoại quốc và VN. Khi chị hát moi người đều im lặng lắng nghe vì chị hát hay quá. Thích nhất bài “Quê hương tuổi thơ tôi” khi đến điệp khúc “ ngày ấy đâu rồi… ngày ấy đâu rồi? Cho tôi tìm lại một ngày ấu thơ…. “ lúc đó giọng chị ngân vang làm mọi người xúc động. Ôi lúc đó ngồi gần chị mà chị không nói chị là Phương Tâm, bởi bản tanh’ của chị rất khiêm nhường. Chị còn nhớ và hỏi thăm mấy đứa con mình nữa. Còn BS Du hát và bình luận về Bóng đá FIFA năm đó. Mình rất tiếc không biết tin BS Du đã qua đời. Cầu chúc chị Tâm luôn mạnh khỏe và hy vọng có dịp được nghe chị hát nữa ❤❤❤

I've been listening to this album on repeat for almost a year now. Old school rock has always been my favorite musical genre, and my wife was born and raised in Saigon. This collection has allowed me to understand a piece of history of my wife's (and daughter's) homeland and gives us a cherished connection. The music is superb, Phuong Tam's voice is non-pareil, and the rich historical and cultural tapestry this album weaves makes it essential. Ah!!!thật là tuyệt chiêu của Cụ Diệm (!!!!!!) khi chọn Thái bà bà P.Tâm trong (biệt đoàn văn nghệ!!!!)& trên là ban nhạc (Khánh Băng(??) như thế ,chỉ 1 đêm tại phòng trà (??) & các chiều -tối khác(??)xin mời các Anh -chị (năm 1960?????)thích nghe p.Tâm(xin lỗi Thái bà bà P.Tâm!!!)…đến tại ..đó…đó (??) nơi mà Thái bà bà P.Tầm làm văn nghệ :Biệt Đoàn văn nghệ của cụ Diệm(??) & cứ thế …khi âm nhạc đã nhập …thì…(???) Bắc tiến lúc nào chả biết (??) quả là tiếc …cho cụ Diệm ..nên chi CS Tàu-HCM phải dứt điểm …cám ơn chị Hà nhiều nhiều ..
