Phaedra (2023) by Tangerine Dream

Tangerine Dream visited us here in San Diego on September 18, 2023! This was their opener, a modern rendition of Phaedra...
Not only were the acoustics supreme and extremely immersive, the lighting effects became so intense, one could feel the music at The Magnolia in El Cajon! It was GREAT!
What is interesting is that I was there, I heard it, I saw it, yet I get something new each time I review this video. One does not necessarily see the full picture the first time through apparently!

I saw TD again in Leuven the 19.5 at The Depot. It was again amazing. Huuuge TD fan for more than 40 years now ❤❤❤RIP Edgar. Greetings Dirk Belgium

I get why people can be disappointed. The latest technology can be impressive, but there’s a reason they brought back modular analog synths: they sound great. Jean Michelle Jarre would never use anything but analog instruments because of the richness of the sound. I continue to listen to music created along the lines of original Tangerine Dream (as well as dabbling in creating my own) but I like the ambient music created by new, more powerful synths as well. The greater the computing power, the richer the sound. Eventually, all that will limit it is the imagination.

Great analysis and analogy! Analog was almost overwhelming to accomplish back in the 70's, but produced such a great sound! And today we have a modern sound created via synthesized instruments. Love them both!

That's nonsense. A quick search on here will find you numerous videos where Jarre says neither analogue or digital are better, they're just different, which is why he uses both. Shows how much you know if you have to lie in an attempt to prove your point.

Love your primary point about it’s about imagination! I would like to add that it’s also creativity coupled with imagination that makes the newer generation of Tangerine Dream so interesting and mesmerizing!

Phaedra is TD signature tune. There have been many different versions made and played but they all have the unmistakable silhouette of Edgar Frose's genius. Long may they play, create and extend into the Cosmos.

I’m seeing them London 8th November 2023. I was introduced to Phaedra and Rubycon in 1975 when I was 14 years old. Still amongst my favorites.

People need to understand that not all bands are "record players", especially TD. I mean even in the 70s their presentations were mainly improvs or recreation of their songs. If you want the same songs over and over, go watch a Kraftwerk concert, as they did not change their setlist for nearly 30 years

I missed out on TD in their heyday. Any chance to see them is worth doing. Admittedly the line up has changed, especially with Edgar's passing but they're trying to keep the spirit going so in a way they're quite brave, not everyone's cup of tea though. Yes, they're a tribute band too but fans still love hearing the old faves but they're using new equipment so the soundscape won't be the same. If you're that offended by Thorsten and co then don't go. Stay at home and crank up the old turntable/cd player.

This legendary band somehow, inadvertently and unexpectedly changed the criteria for evaluating all types of contemporary musicians of their time, cleaned up the then world sound iconostasis, to force these same musicians to measure their talents and irreversibly their ability to surprise their environment 🌖🌡🌴

I really feel compelled to share my experience at TD London Palladium 2023. To be perfectly honest pretentious was my first impression. You can probably tell wasn’t impressed at all. The violinist seemed a bit unnecessary. Didn’t do much and could barely be heard her when she did play. At times I felt like I was in the techno room at a rave. Maybe I’m just showing my age. I’m “old school” Tangerine Dream. The guest who joined in for the encore to play what looked like a Chapman Stick using some cutlery left me baffled. I left before the end and avoided the rush for the door and I wasn’t alone. Clearly disappointed. I'm sorry for being so critical.😞

I totally agree with you I’ve been a tangerine dream fan since 1974. This is basically a tribute that has nothing new to offer. If like me, you prefer the original analog, sounds, you should check out some of the many other original artists out there such as Brendan Pollard, free system project, Syn, Radiollari, radio, massacre, International, javi Canovas. The list goes on and definitely more interesting than listening to this poor rehash of classic Berlin school.

Edgar changed his version of Phaedra in 1988 and this is the version the band found more accessible to play (in Edgar's time with the band) as they had to fit in other tracks of their past catalogue especially from around 1997 onwards. Personally I wish Silver Scale got played more often!

It puzzles me why some people think they're a tribute band when Thorsten Quaesching has lasted longer than any other band member after Edgar and yet he's a newcomer? I think not. This band is still TD and they have gone through many changes. A lot of fans disliked the time they had the saxophone but they didn't rip the band apart like some do now and it was Edgar's wish they carry on in his band name so that should be respected or you're no longer a true fan!
