As a proud pixel 5 owner I'm pleased to see the pixel performing admirably against a device that costs double it's price. S21 ultra is much more versatile and despite improvements in video quality it's clear Samsung are ahead here. Great comparisons as usual nick 😎👍

I'm looking at the Pixel 4a 5g. It's harder to find comparisons to that phone, but luckily Pixel 5 and 4a 5g share the same camera. I thought the Pixel 5 held it's own except when zooming. S21 Ultra can zoom farther than the S21 so it have been nice to see 10x zoom test. Both Samsung phones are to expensive for me, but the S21 Ultra with it's extra zoom capabilities is really tempting.

Both are great phones. For me, for most of the photos and several videos pixel did a better job on my 4k tv. The 108MP of ultra is not so good clearly. Given the quite different prices, pixel is the clear winner here.

Why do people think that a brighter images is some how the best image? Maybe you can argue detail and zoom but a true representation of the scene, the pixel cannot be beat. Meaning I am confident that when I show my pictures off I know what my eyes saw the pixel 5 captured it exactly how I saw it.

I agree. I own an iPhone 11 Pro Max and the s21 Ultra. My girlfriend has the Pixel 4a 5G. I personally don’t like how the ultra makes the image brighter. In many landscape photos on bright days it can blow out these areas. Other than zoom capabilities I prefer the iPhone and Google photos.

How would that be possible? For the last 2-3 years iPhones, pixels and galaxies have been shaded off from DSLR's. So if that was your expectation then sorry for the disappointment. The only place these cameras can go for improvement will be refresh rate, definition, zoom and control probably color science and stabilization. Now if price is important then heck pixel all day. That's the reason I'm on a S8 price and the fact that the details aren't too far behind.

I just ordered the standard S21 and am coming from a Pixel 3. I had my fair share of large phones and prefer the smaller manageable phones. I hope more Android manufacturers start giving us standard Pixel sized phones. Anyway I know the Ultra uses different sensors than the standard S21 or the Plus but it's nice to see Samsung fine tuning their imaging software. This comparison is much closer than I expected. I think the Pixel still has an overall advantage in still photography but I'm surprised how well the Samsung does. Particularly in low light the Samsung actually does quite well, often better than the Pixel. It's very close but the Pixel still seems to be a little better in most still photography samples shown particularly with human subjects. Video has been a Pixel weakness but it's also closer here than I would have expected. The Samsung does have a bit of an advantage visually but it's not as much as I expected. Although from an audio perspective for video I felt like the Pixel did a clearly better job than the Ultra which sounded a bit muffled or muted at times. It wasn't bad and in a vacuum probably wouldn't be noticeable but just listening to them back to back in the compared the audio seemed better on the Pixel consistently. But the video was slightly better visually on the Samsung but by a smaller margin. Overall I felt video to be kinda even with a tiny edge for Samsung. This is a lot closer than I expected. I think for me the Pixel 5 is still slightly better than the Ultra. Especially because I don't really do much video capture on a phone. Pixel still has a smaller than ever but noticeable advantage in still photography. Although I'm also glad to see Samsung improving and making strides, hopefully Google will realize they can't continues to sit on their laurels in photography department. Also makes me feel confident about what to expect photography wise from the S21 I may soon have. I really thought camera drop might be bigger switching back to a Samsung.

Returning my S21U as was disappointed with the camera. Samsung has improved but still lacks Google's magic image processing! Too many out of focus shots with smeared detail and weird colours on the Samsung in low light. Day shots are great on both but the pixel still crushes.

Hey Nick. Which phone do you always go back to? Are you getting any lens flare on your Pixel 5 when you shoot night shots at a lit marquee (like at the theatre)? Using the 4a 5G here, and getting that when I take nightshots of a lit marquee here, but otherwise it's fine.

Both are really spectacular camera systems but to be honest Samsung is now ahead of Google in photos and videos. I think Google needs to step up and should know that rely only on computational photography with old camera sensor of 4 years ago would no longer work on putting Google to be best of best in photography. Competition has really cut up. To continue to maintain the lead especially in photography that Google is known for, new camera sensor is needed along with computational photography. We hope to see this improvement in pixel 6 and pixel 5a.

Yes. I have both the Pixel 5 and S21 Ultra. When I take pictures with the Ultra the edges are not as sharp and detailed as the Pixel 5. I guess it's fine for posting to social media, but when I look at the pictures on a monitor, the Pixel is way way way better. I might return the S21 Ultra. Samsung needs to work on computational photography. Hardware has reached its limit.

Overall I find I looking at your images I prefer the Pixel's photos (with the exception of the telephoto images, digital zoom never looks as good as an actual telephotoo lens) and the Galaxy's video. My videos are all edited at 4k/30 so there's no sense in recording at 4k/60 unless you want darker video all around. Also, both cameras are not able to switch sensors while recording in 4k/60, forcing you to stop recording, switch sensor and ten start recording again. I would definitely not recommend this to anyone. I also do not shoot zoom or macro shots when competing devices do not offer these same sensors. There is nothing to compare in those situations. I did show the 10x zoom for reference.

Halve the price of the samsungand you've got a compelling argument. If we were to have that argument though, I would say the 4a would trump it with the same camera set up. Samsung are struggling to justify that price with what I see here. Both great cameras. Only one with a great ISH price.

The Pixel 4a 5G in comparison with the 5 ... does not wireless charge; smaller battery; less RAM and display not as good. The 4a 5G is slightly bigger. I had a faulty 4 XL which they replaced with a 4a 5G and I was not happy with it (no wireless charge was issue for me) and they swapped it for the Pixel 5.

Nice Comparison, though I wish you had taken 10x telephoto shots on S21 Ultra . I know Pixel 5 can't go that high but this comparison seems almost a duplicate of the S21 comparison. A 10x telephoto would have showed more of the S21 Ultra's strengths and differentiate a bit from the S21 test.

I've noticed the when you switch to 3x zoom it still takes picture from the main 108mp sensor and when you switch to 10x zoom that's on the 3x zoom sensor. I put my finger on the lenses while switching them and it was weird

I just ordered a standard S21, essentially because Google didn't give us a true flagship this past year. I'm upgrading from a Pixel 3. I agree the Pixel still has the better camera especially in still photos but I'm impressed how well the Samsung does. It's closer than ever. I hope Google realizes the advantages it's phones offered in the past are disappearing. Software is becoming more of a matter of taste now that phones have processors that can handle most things and companies have had time to optimize their skins. And other manufacturers have made large strides the past two years in photography realm whereas Google has only made pretty minor improvements. I really enjoyed my Pixel but am pretty excited to spend significant time with a Samsung again. I always felt Samsung does hardware right but Google does software right. Those lines are getting blurred. Competition is great, pushes things forward.

I was thinking, why do both of these look so bad? YT was streaming at 480. I think it's interesting, the digital zoon on the pixel looked much worse, but one benefit is the image stabilization. If they were to upgrade the sensor and add some optical zoom they could split the difference and have a better quality zoom with frankly impressive stabilization. From this it's hard to choose a P5 over a P4a

Samsung might have the edge on a technical level, but I really like Google's approach where texture and exposure is better handled, especially when using Night Sight in any lighting condition. Google would do better if they went with newer, better 12MP sensors to reduce noise and purple fringing.

Google's computational photography can only get better is used on a better sensor, just as long as they have time to fine tune the performance. Keep in mind that Google has used this same sensor for multiple years, allowing their engineers to get to know the hardware extremely well.

@@ssaini5028 Size isn't the only thing that has improved in terms of sensors. Nor is it a guarantee for improved image quality. The IMX sensor in use by the Pixel's main camera has rather outdated deep trench isolation and exhibits purple fringing in de shadows in very high dynamic range scenarios. Using a sensor that isn't 5 years old would help with these issues since Sony has improved raw output in those areas. Having a bigger sensor on top of that would mean having to use a lower iso which helps with noise in low light. This would influence Night Sight capture times.

Pictures that are closer look clearer and cleaner than pictures that look far. Samsung main lens is wider than the pixel making the pictures on the pixel to look better than the S21 Ultra. I don't know why Samsung did it that way understanding that they already have an ultra wide angle camera, 24 mm on Samsung vs 27 mm on the pixel is too wide for a main lens camera

@@phandroid I just see the pictures clearer more detailed I see 4d ,the angles and shapes are just better in my opinion ..

@@bhsurgical2005 Oh really? I see more details on S21 Ultra. S21 have less noise and Pixel dont do a good job with sharpness overall.

You can download the Pixels camera in apk form and have the same processing. I own a galaxy s21 ultra and that's what I did, so technically I have both.

Except it's not specifically fine tuned for this sensors in the S21 Ultra.

@@phandroid not yet. Im using one version that worked on my s10 That was a recent updated one. It works on the ultra, it works on the 3 cameras, ultra wide, main and 3x telephoto . It freezes sometimes. But it definitely works

S21 ultra has the all around useful camera. Great quality especially if you plan to edit. Hopefully pixel 6 has something new.

I have an s8 that cam is way better than mine. Hell my girls A51 gives it a run for its money.
