This was Dragonball Z at its purest when it came to actual martial arts. The weaker the characters were the more emphasis on martial arts, the more powerful they were the less actual great martial arts choreography. The 1st 2 movies Dead Zone and Worlds Strongest along with Fusion Reborn were the best movies to me. Plus this art style was excellent

And I think the problem with that as one of those “what a great problem to have” is that you need to put a lot of work into martial arts heavy work of any kind, regardless of medium and the better you get at it the more people are gonna expect and the worse it is going to get. Because now they want more being released on the same schedule. But damn is a good problem.

This was back when the fight choreography was centered more around the hand-to-hand combat, and the ki blasts were meant to be supplementary and/or finishing moves. By the time we got to the Android saga, the combat became much more focused on large ki blasts and explosions because of the power creep.

People forget Piccolo still got that demon king in him and has no problem killing an opponent. Goku kills on accident or after giving you a million chances. If you watched original Dragonball, youll understand how epic it is to see Piccolo and Goku teaming up and how crazy strong an opponent has to be to push them both to their limit. This was Dragonball at its finest. A martial arts anime with a touch of super powers. Not a super powers anime with very little martial arts as it is today.
