When the violin came in at 28:30, my heart broke and I immediately thought of this quote from the book: "Poor, unhappy Erik [the Phantom]! He had a heart that could have held the empire of the world, but in the end, he had to content himself with a cellar."

+MJR Taurus Indeed. :( I for one do. To me, "Phantom" is a cautionary tale about a child who grows up to inherit the role of the monster people first assumed he'd be. And, while I love a lot of the films and the musical, there hasn't really been a version that captures that, in my opinion; everyone treats it either as a love triangle story or, worse yet, a straight-up horror tale, playing off of Erik's deformity, which totally misses the point of things.
@magorzatadawidowska6288 жыл бұрын
+TheaterRaven Thank you, how nice to meet someone who can look deeply and sees the things at the right side. I can't agree with everyone who writers about Erik only: monster, stalker, murderer, psycho, obsessive man and others. Just thinking like a mob. Any kind word? Try to live like he must have to live and then try to say something about it. If people want to see someone worse , it's hard to believe that is not the truth. Erik deserves to get love , happiness and acceptance. Like many others.
@Qamila17 жыл бұрын
So relieved to see someone else sees this story differently than most have. But I don't see him as a monster at all. I see a man who's too passionate for this world. A man who's been judged not by his heart but by his appearance.

I've been reading all of these comments about how beautiful 28:00 was, but I didn't expect how emotional and breathtaking it would be. I honestly thought it would just be another part of the arrangement, but I actually just started crying out of nowhere. Maybe it's because it reminded me of growing up around the musical, but it was the biggest and most painful wave of nostalgia I have ever experienced. I don't know how I feel right now.

Omg i never knew a musical for POTO existed, yet good gracious i was blessed with ALW's generous soul last week! Although i'm lowkey upset many aspects of the rendition was flawed or incomplete, it's pretty amazing to see how musicals can incorporate both plot and sentimental dialogue so conveniently. Hats down! The musical deserves mpre than just praise! Overall, the music and acting was the best and both were able to translate the atmosphere of each scene of the story. Never have i ever been so immersed by such a profound melody, and never was any 21st century film able to capture the intricacy of the intellectual dialogue and expression of 19th century classical stories, of which is prominently the fashion of their climax. It's proved futile so far of any cinematic film adoptions to incorporate the dramaticism of 19th century classics without unnecessarily having to abbreviate their significance of speech for the sake of a fast-pace narrative; that would, essentially, obliterate the moral of the story.
@williambillings69723 жыл бұрын
The point-counterpoint of the two instruments is fascinating, and easily conjures images of the characters' performances. I first saw Phantom with a woman with whom I was very much in love. That love, and the Phantom's love for Christine were indistinguishable, and Lloyd Webber's music is, more that 25 years later a revisiting of the agony, and ecstasy of such love.
