A playthrough of Sierra's 1995 PC game, Phantasmagoria.
*This recording has been replaced by a newer, much higher quality recording. Please watch that one instead: • Phantasmagoria (PC) Pl...
Please note that the game is being played in the uncensored mode, and though it's nothing worse than a rated R horror movie, there are a few graphic bits if you're sensitive to that kind of thing.
Also, you might notice that there are no prompts in the video to switch discs: I copied the data from each of the discs to the hard drive before playing, since switching seven of them gets tiring after awhile. Especially when the point of CD #2 is to buy drain cleaner and to have an interminable chat with an old woman about antiques (which is not even necessary for finishing the game). The game is amazing, but really Mrs. Williams? Did this really require seven entire CDs? At least the entire seventh disc consuming finale makes up for this... ahem oversight.
The game is so much easier to playthrough like this, though I must admit - the lack of a "Please insert Disc 7" message when you click on the dark room door for the last time does upsettingly enough rob the start of the finale of a bit of the tension! (/end nostalgic geek out)
If you want to see a specific part, the chapter start times are below:
Chapter 1 - 3:29
Chapter 2 - 44:12
Chapter 3 - 1:13:16
Chapter 4 - 1:39:07
Chapter 5 - 2:16:11
Chapter 6 - 2:48:16
Chapter 7 - 3:26:26
Finale - 3:36:49
All of Carno's wives' deaths are shown throughout the video, as well as the majority of the scenes that are available in-game; if I had done the quickest path from beginning to end, the video would have been nearly an hour shorter.
I've been on a Sierra kick lately, so if there are any of their classic adventures that you'd like to see, or if you have any comments on the playthrough, please let me know!

A friend brought this over in 1995, I was blown away it had seven discs. We stayed up all night and beat it, it was pretty epic. Full motion video was still a new thing for computers/or consoles back then. My computer at the time was a 486dx and it handled it pretty well.

My brother had this game. However, there was a game that came a year before this of a very similar style. It was called: Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon. It ran on very similar hardware, came on several discs, and also featured FMV. I thought it was pretty amazing for the time, but I suppose the novelty of it all, soon ran thin.

+Akane Murasaki , nope, it's very pixel and, besides, almost third of the screen is covered with that huge and unnecessary menu. In visual novels and The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery it's not bad because these menus contain beautiful arts those change during the walkthrough but this menu isn't good at all. Even in A Puzzle of Flesh they've removed it in a black line under the screen and it looks much better. And the graphics from A Puzzle of Flesh were much better than Phantasmagoria, though.

Something about the sincerity of the acting (cheesy, yes, but sincere), and special effects actually makes this game more horrifying than many modern games called out for such things. I've played the Bioshock games, Doom games, Souls games, Resident Evil games, and none of them disturbed me like this. I've always had problems with "80s gore". Old R rated movies from the 70s and 80s tweek me out more than almost anything but blatant gore porn made today. Not sure what it is about it that effects me so.
@hannable70
@hannable70 2 жыл бұрын
Except it was the 70s and 80s that brought excessive gore to the mainstream with such movies as Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Nightmare on Elm Street. You know the kind. A group of innocent teens get together in some remote place - and the **ENTIRE** purpose of the movie was to see how creative and gory each successive death could be - sans any real plot to speak of. I can watch violence and gore all day and not be bothered. But these "body count" movies do disturb me. For one thing, they're semi-Biblical in the sense that one would think these poor kids are being butchered for underage drinking and sex before marriage. What disturbs me about those gory slaughter-fests is the fact that the victims are truly innocent. They're not criminals, they're not escaped prisoners, they're not terrorists, they're not secret enemy agents, they're not insurgents or partisans in a war. No, they're just a group of kids doing what most kids do at that age - and to watch kids that young be butchered for no real reason ... to me ... it's not something I feel comfortable doing for entertainment.

@MrGencyExit64
@MrGencyExit64 9 жыл бұрын
Luke Cloud I know it's going to sound weird, but... part of the "true 1995 experience" was the sound of your CD-ROM drive seeking. That's missing from all of these FMV games you can pickup on GOG these days and it kind of makes me sad :( After investing $500 in a CD-ROM drive and sound card to hook it up to, that unique sound was somehow satisfying. You'd only hear it in games that absolutely required a CD-ROM, and weren't simply packaged on CD-ROM for convenience.

+Ophiuchus123456789 Everything has to rely on the plot, especially in horror movies. With CGI today, everything is possible, and life-like. It takes the sense of danger out of it. Back when I was young you didn't think something was possible without being cheesy. So you were always amazed by the advancement of SFX. And, didn't expect what was coming, because it wasn't possible. But, it was, and how it looked scared the crap out of you. Like this game.

Back in the mid 90s my friend had this game. We hung out in his room taking turns playing, trying to figure out what to do next. I remember being just absolutely thrilled with the FMV scenes, the music, the way the story unfolds, and feeling so caught up in it. I loved point and click games like Space Quest, King's Quest, Maniac Mansion and stuff, but this game seemed so much more than those because of the real actors and serious tone. I loved the spooky horror mystery of it all. We spent about a week of beautiful summer days just cooped up in his room playing Phantasmagoria. Two dumb kids completely engaged in a silly PC game! It was bliss!
