Phantasy Star IV - Any% Speedrun (

AKA Reset Star IV: The End of the Sethlenium. Igglanova Count: 73. Good execution on the glitches, varying luck, and some nail-biters - gonna call it a speedrun. Word out to my boys Mor_mot and Veo for their work on this of course. And a shout out to my favourite monsters the Imagiomages, not today old friends.

Wow. So ok, speedrunning this is a thing... One of the first JRPG's I ever played, destroyed in half an hour, using glitches I never imagined existed.

Having just beaten this game again for the umpteenth time, I decided to check out a speedrun of it. I got to about the 25 minute mark and then was laughing so hard I was crying. Even if I were a speedrunner I would never be able to any% this game. I'd be laughing too hard to see what I was doing.

I've beat this game many times. My favorite rpg. I've never done any glitches. Not even the shadowblade glitch. This friggin blew my mind.

How does that glitch that changes the menu work?

Basically ingame collision and trigger box detection is disabled for optimization reasons while menu is visible - it would slow down everything if it would be enabled at the same time as the costly menu is rendered. A glitchy menu is still a menu as far as the game is concerned, so it allows unrestricted movement. And the menu itself is glitched once several frame-perfect inputs of "Select" / "Go Back" are performed.

I'm guessing it's some sort of memory glitch. He seems to be able to manipulate the macro screen until it corresponds to a value, then saving and loading the game makes him be there.

i think it might be but if you have a computer you might as well just find another way to emulate it since it’s fairly old at this point, it’s a great game I can’t recommend it enough
