Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst Newbie Guide

This video was made when a friend expressed interest - and subsequent trouble - getting started in PSO: BB. I whipped up this tutorial to go over some of the basics of the game, as well as some hints and tips for newer players.

Can’t believe private servers are still online, I still prefer the real legit servers all my items were on there. I remember getting this game in 2002-2003 and signing up for the forums of pso-world. Now forums aren’t a thing. They are mostly on discord.

Thank you for this video! Question, is there a limit on the amount of items I can carry? If so what are those limits? I noticed sometimes the character can't pick anymore drops of a certain kind.

@100Megashock I believe 10 -mates and -fluids, 10 moon atomizers, and 5 star atomizers? And I believe 30 items total on your person including equipped items. It's been a while since I played though. You do have item storage though so you can stash them at the bank, it's to the right of the shops (outside, by the big empty area)

Ephinea (the game server in this video) preserved them for the ultimate vanilla experience. I don't know about other servers though

I know it works natively with an Xbox gamepad, but I think you have to toggle that setting on first in-game. It should be under... I believe System -> Controls? I'll check when I get a minute.

Also if you use a bunch of different joysticks/gamepads/other input devices it's possible the game will just grab the first one on the list and care about that and ONLY that device regardless of if it's even actively plugged in, since it's using an antiquated version of Windows' gamepad handling systems. You might want to look into devreorder if that's a problem you might be having. I had that problem once when it was paying attention to the joystick on my Logitech G13 instead of my actual gamepad.

If you have a controller already setup and working on steam, you should be able to use it on Ephinea psobb. Just add the ephinea launcher to steam as a non-steam game and launch the ephinea launcher through steam. This is how I got my switch pro controller to work on psobb, and I didn't need to download any drivers or anything.

For the love of god, how do I put spells and such on the 1-0 on screen numbers?!

It's been a while since I played it, but I believe if you open your shortcut settings menu, put your mouse or cursor over whatever you want to assign to a number and hit that number, and it should assign it to that key. Same for the second shortcut menu (so you can have two rows of hot keys.)

@@sloppystyle Make sure keyboard controls are turned on then when you go into a combat zone you hit customize. Then click one of the nodes and it'll bring up all the spells and such. When that comes up, put your cursor over what you want and simply press the number you want it to coincide with. The number should show up just next to it and when you exit out it should now be on the number palette for you to press. Also, when you hold control there is a second bunch of numbers you can put even more on in this same fashion.

My antivirus detected trojan viruses from ephinea and ultima files. Everyone on both forums say it's a false positive and if you and others play it then i suppose im good to go... Just wanted to make sure if i should trust it. Thanks

Yeah, typically the code in patches and whatnot reads as false positives at times. If it's right off the official Ephinea website, you're good to go.

Spooky but it's a false positive. I had warnings for PSU Clementine as well, also false positives. Both communities are doing well in terms of numbers without a single complaint.

Thank you both! I decided to risk it and try Ultima and so far I've not experienced any problems (aside from the Anti Virus preventing me). Fun game but I'll forever have this paranoia that in any moment I'll get attacked 👍

I'm a bit late as an ephinea player for multiple years, I can confirm it does read as a virus but from deeper file inspection. It is 100 percent safe. Enjoyed it for years with no issues at all. Even adding the item reader and addons no problems

I know this is old but I'll tell you why it reports as a virus - your anti virus is basically just a database of identifiers, so when they update the game, the new identifier isn't in their database yet, so it reports it as malicious out of caution. And now you know.

Hahahaha, there is a story, it's just kinda like a souls game in the way that it's almost exclusively told through those data pods you see lying around as you progress. Some of the side quests you can take on have their own stories that get revealed as you play them, too.

@@SorarikoMotone i heard he used to be able to equip spread needle. That would be dope but still not worth the trouble of not having traps OR good techs. No shifta even At least my humar on ultima can get lv 7 shifta from macho blades (ultima exclusive weapon) but still he sucks 😂

Nah... I played a melee Fomar. That wasn't much better, though at least it's better support than a Humar. Dex stat was low as hell, so hitting anything on Ult was a sight to see (misses everywhere), and I used slicer mainly. I quite enjoyed playing PSO back then.

@@Jay6x on the ultima server you can pay to increase hit up to 80% but i tend to use fomarl instead of fomar because i dont like godricks cloak. it only has 5 edk if you equip red ring and megid be everywhere lol

I played as a HUmar back when I first played the game on GC in 2003. Big fucking mistake in hindsight but I played the fuck out that character. Fun times. These days I choose HUnewearl as my hunter of choice just because I like being able to support my team as well.

"Caseal" was the naming convention for female robots in the game - "casts" for men and "caseals" for women. HUcast, HUcaseal, RAcast, RAcaseal

How are the drop rates for rare items ? Are they modified so get easier drops for noice wepons ?

Been a while since I played it, but if you look at their website, I believe they mention if the drop rates were altered at all. I know they changed what sector IDs drop what items, but I'm not sure about the rates.
