FM sound can be great, but for this game, the regular music is so much brighter: the FM has this overly smooth quality. The sound effects, though, are mute-worthy.

I’m gonna give him another try because of your comment. I made it 5 minutes before I was gonna leave. Might be nerves. But the last like six sentences he’s started he hasn’t completed. It’s kinda unbearable.

Eh, I agree. I got 1:20:00 in and I felt kind of bad for him and shut it off. He seemed to alienate his couch and he was trying way too hard to be a color man rather than focus on the game and elements. I imagine this would be much better if people have seen this before, but for me, I was just trying to focus on what he was doing and heard 10 words of a joke and 2 words of explanation. Felt like I was getting half a run and half a comedy stand-up. Didn't mesh very well, and you can tell that from the silence from the couch. The moments that garnered the most laughs weren't from the 100 jokes he told, but from the 20 words spoken by the couch and the donations. Great runner, but he should've spent less time trying to grab the spotlight and realized he was already in it. Would've had more couch participation, more laughs, and ultimately a more enjoyable run. Plus, newbs like me would know more about the game than I do now.

It would’ve been better if the couch had people that actually played the game too and helped in explanations. So sad GDQ doesn’t care about the oldies like this. 😭

Wow! I played this as a kid, I rented it and never finished. As an adult, with emulators, 10 years later, I finally finished it, although it took months! Hats off to you man! I love this game!!

It’s tough. Easy to get lost, start with dead zones and mazes that got worse in the sequel. The equipment guide, fast forward, 4:17 map and quadruple exp/meseta rates help a ton. Sega genesis collection helps speed up and save states for this series with bad menus and is the closest the US will get to a remake. 14:28 lol ph-balanced game. 58:00 beginner’s trap uh oh. I didn’t know most of this lol

You just know a modern Phantasy Star would be soulless, tropey, and uninspired. These games really shine when they ignore common tropes of the era, get really wild with the locations and tech-whiplash (fighting killer death robots with boomerangs and knives) and creating simple, lovable characters. A modern take would add too much character interaction for no reason that would make them less likable, stick to the general plot of another game in the series, and you'd probably even have a slow ramp in tech from pure medieval (with the occasional robot or mutant) and end with high-tech labs and space stations. One of the coolest things was finding out what the next dungeon will be like.

@@ChargeQM You're basically describing the PS2 remake of this game with that first bit. It adds a lot of "character" to the characters that didn't do a thing at all for them, most notably turning Myau into a sarcastic prick who now looks more like an ugly dog than an adorable fantasy cat. It's also a lot easier (not a bad thing since the original is brutal) but they did it lazily by just making everyone's numbers bigger. It's insanely easy to powerlevel and even without it you'll still be ending the game with thousands of HP for those Reaper jerks in the final dungeon to ineffectually plink at only for you to heal it away by spamming Cure with your hundreds of MP. I was really disappointed in it overall.

Back on-topic: seemed pretty stressful, for ya, during the times where you had no one to bounce your jokes off of or to ‘keep you on-track’ with the subject discussions and your train of thought, given you had to focus on the game at the very same time. Well done, dude. Enjoyed your commentary and jokes plenty (though, like any “good Back-Seat Driver”, it’s a shame you didn’t have a dedicated co-host for the segments of your self-deprecating dark-humour). Hi. Im trying to find the aero prism in the dungeon around 1:02:00. However, first time around that dungeon, i fought the titan but was not able to keep the prism because of lack of space. Is there a way i can get that prism again?

I never had a Genesis but this RPG might have been an interesting experience if I could've played it. Final Fantasy Legend 2 on the Gameboy was my first jam. It took me more than a year to beat it.

Optimizations missed: You can theoretically manipulate luck in this game, though it's not easy. In the dungeons, you should walk backwards, which speeds up movement when you have to run. Probably faster to get an item to warp out of the Noah cave. MAYBE it could have been worth it to get the free light saber in casba cave? Why the fishmen? Because they're high-ish xp and guaranteed at that location?

Really hitting the bottom of the barrel using fast forward eh? Like, I understand it's part of the release but it's not a feature of the normal game more of a side effect of it being ported using emulation... should be considered tool assisted and not an actual run.
