But the one that I love most is Ramin Karimloo's reaction he is the only one who really reacts when she touched his deformity. He immediately grabs her hand and holds it there. I think that is a very realistic and beautiful reaction. No one ever touched his face, and if they did they never touched it like that. I really love how Ramin did that. Thank you so much for this.

John Owen Jones has a special place in my heart anyway cause he was my first phantom, but I can pick apart why 33:43 (even though you can barely see it) is my all time favorite version of the kiss. 1. He has easily the most physically dramatic reaction of all of them, but it somehow comes across *less* melodramatic because his acting is so good. You feel like he reacted that way because he's genuinely overwhelmed, not because he's an actor playing a part. 2. instead of going for a second kiss, Christine ops to just... hold him instead, and that's still played as just as significant as a second kiss. This is such a beautiful change because it reinforces what the actual focus of the moment is meant to be. It was never about a romantic/ sexual act, it was about being touched with kindness for the first time in his life 3. There's a moment where you can see he's so conflicted and trying to decide whether or not to hold her back, but get's so overwhelmed by what's happening he literally *shoves* her away. It's like he's hyper aware he doesn't deserve her kindness and can't bear to take advantage of it for a second longer.
@Niniane174 жыл бұрын
I agree, it seems like one of the most realistic reaction a person could have. He's never been loved, now suddenly someone is kissing him on the lips? It's more than enough to make him feel dizzy. And I love that Christine doesn't get scared and just crouches and hugs him. It's a nice touch and different from other productions.

@rhapsody7104 жыл бұрын
Just a reminder: Why does the Phantom not know what to do with his hands? The following reasons: 1) He wasn't expecting that kiss, and it hit him like a sucker punch. 2) When a person has spent so much of their life being told that they are not worthy of love in any form, it can be hard for them to let go of that and finally believe that they deserve it. So even while Christine is kissing the Phantom and he clearly *wants* to touch her, he doesn't know what to do because part of him still believes that he doesn't deserve it.

+Meadow Peace Late to this, and to take your rhetorical question seriously - I imagine with all the makeup they have on, the Phantoms don't actually feel much. (Ah, deformity makeup - ugly as heck but protective in its way.) I remember an interview between Gary Mauer and Beth Southard regarding the kiss, and Mauer said that with all the makeup on he really can't feel anything. Also, IIRC Beth Southard added that she preferred the kiss with Raoul because the Phantom tastes like glue due to the makeup.

8:33 I’m skimming through some of these, I’m bored and lazy, but I’ve never heard a Raoul yell for Christine or even try to protest to the kiss really. (Maybe there’s more in here, I’ll have to see XD) That is a nice change tbh, I know Raoul is trying to escape but him acknowledging what’s happening and trying to STOP it just warms and breaks my heart more for Raoul’s character.
@PrismsofGlass2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Raoul yelling during the kiss is an old-school thing, removed quite a few years ago. There's not many videos of it happening, but I've heard it on several audios. I like it quite a lot too, but I imagine they took it out because it distracts audiences from the Phantom and Christine's kiss, haha.

For me it is one of the saddest scenes of the play because Christine is desperately trying to save her lover's life by kissing the Phantom and trying desperately to make it seem like love for him. The arm failing by the Phantom upon being kissed by Christine to him took him off balance and was unbelievable. He couldn't hold her because he knew he didn't truly have her love. Great play and wonderful scenes, music, lyrics and should never end. Thanks for the comparison.
@alexiaelenamocanu93155 жыл бұрын
Yeah I would have agreed if there was only one kiss BUT There's a second one afterwards. She didn't have to kiss him twice to save Raoul, once would have been enough. There was something that happened during the first kiss and she felt that spark. Christine was not in love with Raoul, she was pretty much just using him to get over the stress having to deal with the death of her father at last and having no angel of music brought onto her.

@bawoman4 жыл бұрын
I think you missed the point of the ending. She didn't kiss him, twice, and embrace him just so he would save Raoul. Raoul would be saved as long as she said she would stay with him, that was pretty clear. No full bodied embraces or full lipped passionate kisses needed for that. The point is she kisses him out of compassion (and maybe a little curiosity, as he had stirred feelings in her she never got to explore, but that's more my take) because she realized how starved this man was for love and affection. Listen to the lyrics she sings before she says it. That is what breaks The Phantom's heart in the end, and why he lets her go. Her's was an act of pure compassion, which is what made him truly love her. And the moment it hit him how much she loved her, he knew she would have to let her go to be happy. He let her go because he loved her, not because he realized she didn't love him.

Wow. What a great comparison of the differences. It's interesting to see how it was played in the various areas. In some, he holds her and kisses back with passion. Some, he just touches her hair. Some, he wants to hold her so badly but can't. And some, he's almost playing a song with his hands - music of the night. There are various reactions to the kiss from him - a feeling of passion, a sense that she pities him, the sense that it’s a “goodbye,”... And a difference in interpretations as to why he had to cut it off. Some interpreted it as hearing the mob’s coming for him, while others reacted as if they suddenly remembered who they were and why kissing her was a mistake. It's also interesting to see the various costuming. There are a few where Erik's make up isn't quite as professionally done. And others where it's flawless. Thank you for posting this. It's terrific. I have a hard time picking my favorite!

So interesting how different they really are; many end up paying homage to Crawford and keeping their arms wide before eventually curling them. However, Peter karrie (for example) touches his face and then rushes back to examine her face, as if to see if he has hurt or changed her. Nicholas Saverina actually holds her and lets her hold him up. Franc D’Ambrosio goes in for another kiss before she offers it. Paul Stanley touches her with the back of his hands and then shoves her away. Howard McGillan traces her body over and over, wanting to touch her. Zoltan Miller straight up makes out with her. Atilla grabs her super intensely. James Romick shakes his head as if realizing this is never what he wanted. Tim Martin Gleason starts teasing at her hair. Matthew Camelle’s kiss was very tender and sweet and she jerks back in shock from it. John Owen Jones also had a tender kiss after initially jerking to shove her away from him in fear. Earl pulls away immediately when she touches the open wound on his face. Cudia drops to her height and locks his arms around her waist. Jennifer Hope Willis rolls her hips against him. Ramin covers both of their faces with his hand to hide from the audience. Gina Beck withdraws in digust, touching her mouth but goes back in after composing herself. The variety is fascinating.

I like 19:38 - both for reaction and make up design. 32:08 - I LOVE the way he takes her hand like that against his face. Sorry to bring a completely different fandom in here, but all this reminds me of when River kisses the Eleventh Doctor on the show Doctor Who.... no idea what to do with the hands - Oh i know, wave them around like a beached octopus!

I love how some of the Phantom's hands just freaking *spasm* because they're THAT surprised when they've had their first kiss with Christine.

I saw phantom in Denver a few weeks ago with Erik being played by Chris Mann and when Christine kissed him he fell to his knees, it was the best kiss I've seen by far

- At first: Awww five minutes later: This music is killing me!! x_x - Oh God, how the hands are shaking from the Phantom! :D haha every time the hands^^ - 9:00 we see all perfect the kiss ^^ - I understand a "my" every time by the german vids, but I know the lyrics are "Das lass ich nicht zu!" o.O ..... (fifteen minutes later) Only now one can hear the "zu". But I still hear the "my". What's wrong? :/ - Too bad that Valerie link doesn't occur with Mathias Edenborn. They are currently playing in Hamburg, Germany and for me with Ramin and Sierra on the first place.

As explained to a previous commentator on this video, I picked clips based on actors and trying to get as many in as I can without repeating couples. Since I already had one of Sierra Boggess (with Brent Barrett's Phantom) and one of Ramin Karimloo (with Leila Benn Harris's Christine), I thought it redundant to include another of Ramin and Sierra. It would mean having to include every variety of actor pairings ever, which would bloat the video to several hours, likely.

Glass Prism Yeah, but, you put the Phantom with a lot of diferent Christines...
@PrismsofGlass10 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, because sometimes the ONLY video of a Christine is with that one Phantom, and better to leave that in than kick it out because, oh no, that Phantom's already there! As an example, the only videos of Sarah Brightman and Mary D'arcy are with Crawford, so that's the Phantom that's there. It's similar with Christines - Rebecca Pitcher shows up a lot because the only videos of, say, Ted Keegan, or Peter Lockyer, or Stephen Buntrock, are with her. Yet you should know that she's ALSO with Phantoms like Brad Little, and Hugh Panaro, and Howard McGillin, but she doesn't go in there with them too because I have videos of Little/Panaro/McGillin with other Christines. I could go on and on, but variety was key here.

Legit all of these are 1,000,000 times better than the movie. Eric isn’t supposed to act all sexy! He’s supposed to be shocked that anyone would ever show him love! Love these clips.

I actually love when he knows what to do with his arms and grabs her tight. It’s so sweet, what would be the best would be him being shocked and freezing for a second, and then as soon as he can think he grabs her and kisses her back firmly, that would be perfect

I agree. The second kiss should be his opportunity to hold her and kiss her properly

I wrote my comment here, but can't find it, strange. I wanted to say: I love Earl Carpenter's face: You see hope, surprise and incredulty all together or one just after the other. And when he covers his face again after the kiss, like he forgot to look that way for a moment and then suddently remembered it again.

When you see how the Phantom shakes during these passionate kisses, you should be feeling compassion the poor guy.
@PrismsofGlass11 жыл бұрын
Because that's how it's done in the UK tour. I suppose it might be from the shock of the kiss. I think it might also be an allusion to the original novel, with the Phantom falling at Christine's feet and such.

Since I already had a kiss scene with Ramin (with Leila Benn Harris) and a kiss scene with Sierra (with Brent Barrett), I thought it would be redundant to to have one of them both. I applied this rule with all Phantoms and Christines. If I had put every pairing ever, the video would probably be four hours long or something!
