All the endless Phantom adaptations were worth it at the very least for giving us Lindsay Ellis. Would she have embarked on the same intellectual journey if not for her Phantom phase where she met Elisa and Nella?

Right? It managed to cram in more Leroux-faithful references into a half-hour kids' show than most 90-minute, made-for-grownups film adaptations. If only they'd managed to include Daroga, it would've been perfect.

I've read the original novel in French (I have no merit, being a native French speaker) and I'd tend to think the less poetic translations might be the more accurate ones. Leroux was a former journalist turned crime fiction writer. His Phantom was pretty much a mystery novel with gothic elements and no truly supernatural ones. In many ways it's a speudo-documentary.

When I read Phantom, I didn't get a sense of romance at all. I felt it was more a crime drama than anything. It's written as a police report to me. So the fact that an academic translation is more accurate to Leroux makes a lot of sense. I still love her passion for the series even if I've never been much of a phan. I just like seeing people passionate about something. It's just nice to see

Too many years, fighting back tears, why won't the past just die! You know, the song "wishing you were somehow here again" reminds me of extinct animals. I think of that one Hawaiian bird, which is the last of its kind, and will never see its bird friends again. Just as Christine wishes that her father, once so lively, now surrounded by statues, we lament the deaths of animals like Dodos, Baiji Dolphins, and extinct birds, who now dine with fossils and are the roommates of skeletons.

For anyone curious, I live in Korea and the production here is actually just called "Phantom" (팬텀) and it's the Yeston & Kopit version, which I find interesting! I think that ALW's version is still more well-known here, but there are some big names in the Korean entertainment industry starring in this version of Phantom. Side note: One day, I must buy the Anne Bachelier illustrations - they're so unbelievably gorgeous!

If you want to check really good Phantom "phanfics", try Beyond the Masque by Kae Jacobs and the 8-book series Through Phantom Eyes by Theodora Bruns. Six of the books were already published, volume 7 will be released in the near future. Those are books worth buying and reading.

Oh. My God. I recently discovered your Phantom book collection from 2019 and I've been watching and rewatching it religiously for a few weeks now. It's inspired me to start my own collection, for which I'm several books in, and the very first one I got is the one you're holding at the beginning of this video. As if that weren't enough, I literally just got two published books of phanfiction in the mail right the heck now, and here this video is, tempting me further! I'm going nuts, I feel like this is fate, my brain is Phantom salad, I'm never going to escape this.

I have the copy of The Phantom of the Opera by Lisa! It was the first copy I bought while at the store with my dad. The Dracula x Phantom of the Opera book sounds interesting. XD I grew up watching Phantom of the Paradise! It was my dad's favorite movies he watched it in theaters when he was a teenager. I actually played, "Old Souls" during my first dance with my husband. Robert England as the Phantom is a favorite too. :) As much as I love Julian Sands as the Warlock... his role as The Phantom creeped me out. -_- Oh! I found a cassette tape of the original Broadway cast!

That '86 animated Phantom was actually my second exposure to Phantom. My aunt and uncle are both music teachers and were pretty big Phantom fans. So, they played the highlights from the Webber musical form me, explained the story, and actually made me a copy for my own. Which I eventually wore out. My aunt then took me to Blockbuster one day and rented the animated film for me. Specifically because it was a more book accurate version.

Oh I'm so glad you've done this sequel video to your first Phantom book collection video! I've been a Phan for years now, but your collection definitely puts mine to shame. Thank you for doing these videos and sharing your collection with us!😮🙂👍🏻🙏🏻💙💜📖📚💿 I very highly recommend the Phantom (romance) novels by Michelle Rodriguez (the author, not the film actress). She's written and self-published a number of them, and I absolutely LOVE them. If you're a hardcore Erik/Christine shipper, then Michelle's books are a must-read! Start with her novel "The Opera Ghost Unraveled". I've been able to purchase her books from Amazon. And while her retellings of Erik & Christine's romance do lean more towards eroticism, her stories aren't nearly as graphic and erotic as those of Colette Gale. Michelle's Phantom novels are written a bit more poetically, and her portrayals of Erik and Christine are powerful and poignant and deeply passionate. Well worth the read!🥰👍🏻💖💕📖📚

Ooh, a book with a ribbon it! That's what sold me on a fancy-pants edition of The Secret Garden. I had a regular paperback of it when I was a kid - still have that same copy - but it got so battered by the time I was grown (literally, the cover was coming apart) that I hunted down a beautiful hardback version that had a ribbon attached and I love it. I don't know that I read that version very often because not long after I got a kindle and started just getting public domain copies of as many childhood classics as I could. Ironically Phantom was not one of them lol. I was curious enough to read it after the 2004 movie came out, but I thought it was just ok and didn't ever read it again. Granted, it was a library copy and probably therefore most likely just the public domain one.

46:00: In the score of the Collector's Edition, I might be mistaken but I believe Quebec soprano Claudine Cote sang the roles of Carlotta and Christine. The production was done circa 1990 in Montreal, the film was showed to the public with a live orchestra (I Musici), then aired on television. (Oh and Claudine used to be my opera teacher.)

about the yeston and kopit musical, I absolutely adore the takarazuka version of it from Japan. They do the musical in their own style and make it a spectacle, which is just beautiful and the cast is all female, which is so cool like these ladies are sooo talented. My favorite part is that the Phantom hides in the orchestra as the conductor during Christines performance and he takes the chandelier down with a gun shot. It's definitely very unique overall but I love it. I just think it’s beautiful

I've been a lapsed Phan for a few years (I've been discovering other fandoms) and watching this video just brought my love for the story roaring back. I've read the book, have seen so many of the films, made lots of friends because of our love for the story. Thank you for this trip down memory lane and for the revival of my "Phantom" obsession. :) Also, have you read or seen any of the movie versions of "The Man Who Laughs"? It's a novel by Victor Hugo and is similar to "Phantom" in the "Disfigured guy finds romance and has to battle the world's prejudices against him" plot. If you haven't, I highly recommend it.

I LOVE THE MAN WHO LAUGHS!!! Honestly, the 1928 film with Conrad Veidt and Mary Philbin (both of whom I absolutely adore) is probably the best silent film I’ve seen (but, of course, Chaney’s 1925 Phantom will always be up there, too). The book was also really good. And to think, if I wasn’t such a phan, I never would have watched the Phantom Reviewer, who introduced me to this. Phantom is still better, though. Sorry for being all over the place; I’m just really excited ;)

@@anastasiavaganov8831 Nice to find a fellow "The Man Who Laughs" fan! I, too, love the 1928 film and the book. I'm even working on my own play adaptation of the novel. As for deciding which is the better story, TMwL or "Phantom", I guess that'd have to be determined by what someone means as "better". Personally, while the stories have similarities, I don't think they should be put in competition with each other. Both have elements that make them great tales in their own right.

You know what? You’re totally right! In all honesty, I wrote that comment last night, and I was so tired, I really should have been asleep. I’m usually good about going over my comments a few times before I send them, and when I reread my comment this morning, I was like “ooo did I really say ‘better’?? *cringe*” That’s totally a matter of opinion. What I meant to say is that I, personally, like Phantom more. The thing is, Phantom gets so many adaptations, so it’s already kind of unfair. Both stories are absolutely gorgeous, and I think that The Man Who Laughs needs a lot more love and attention. I personally like it more than Hunchback, yet it still remains pretty obscure. I’m glad to hear that you’re working to make it more known! I’d love to see it when it’s finished

I have to say it, to me at least the definitive movie version will always be the 1925 Lon Chaney film, yet it's a movie that is meant to have an orchestral theme, not a rock-techno-pop soundtrack. Still, I find one of the greatest tragedies in horror films being that Lon Chaney Jr was never allowed to play Erik, the role that made his father a legend

"The Shadows of the Opera" is basically the Phantom has a girl accused a crime she did not commit help him fight Professor Moriarty, the Black Coats (Victorian Era Mafia), and the Countess di Cagliostro (Enemy of Arsene Lupin). Lots of cross-overs abound.

You know how people told you about different Phantom books that you didn’t have after your last video? Well it’s about to happen again. 2 books, one out, one upcoming: Muppets Meet the Classics - The Phantom of the Opera, by Gaston Leroux and Erik Forrest Jackson (the cover is hilarious - Kermit appears to be playing Raoul, Miss Piggy is Christine and Uncle Deadly is the Phantom.) The other one is another graphic novel by Titan Comics - but this one is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom, rather than the book. It’s coming out on November 30, 2021. (Supposedly - it’s been delayed multiple times before, but you never know.) Enjoy!

That really horrible musical I mentioned that people always mistakenly thought was ALW features him heavily. The Phantom of the Mall features a modern teenage character in his role, but he's whitewashed (and played by Pauly Shore).

@@MavenoftheEventide I'll check out the play. I watched Ruddigor with Vincent Price. Comparatively how bad could it be?
