This is a great piece to play at any time. But on a truly grand organ like this ... by candlelight ... in the run-up to all the silliness of halloween ... it feels epic!
I hope I have a few years left before I start looking like the thumbnail ...

i want to be in the shire presence of one of these. i want to smell the dusty smoke that comes out off there, i want to feel my body vibrate from the the bass pipes. it seems like it would be a surreal experience

Yes, they breathe and they heave and they bellow! There be dust and spiders. It's great to stand inside them when they're being played - things do rattle and shake. Smoke would be a worry, though. 😉

Yes, it's not at all like you to be lost for words!! 😉 Many thanks for commenting, I'm really glad you enjoyed this one. I change between manuals (keyboards) for the different sounds, but I also change the stops on each manual at different times either by hand or using the combination pedals operated "under the waterline" by the feet. So there's plenty of variation in the sound throughout the piece. Of course, pretty much all the stops are out by the end!

Hi Dietmar. Many thanks for your encouraging comment. The tutti you hear at 1:41 is just the Great and Pedal on their own, but I've got everything going by the end. Unusually for Christ Church, I was sweltering during this recording - those candles make a big difference at the console! I suppose one day I'll look like the thumbnail ...

Hello Wolfie. Many thanks for commenting. I very much enjoyed putting this arrangement together. Someone bought me a monster mask to wear for the recording but I quickly dropped that idea for three reasons: (1) I couldn't see the music out of the tiny eye holes; (2) the rubber mask was very hot and comfortable to wear, particularly with the candles being so close; (3) it looked absolutely ridiculous. Anyway, thanks for dropping me a line!

Just go for it! Wanting to learn a particular piece is a great motivation to sit down and practise. Work on it one line at a time. Short practice sessions, but often, can work really well. Good luck!
