Genuinely feel bad for Winslow. The scene where he's in prison, shocked at having his teeth pulled, tugged at the heart strings a bit!
@ItWILLbeWONDERFUL_THERE3 жыл бұрын
I've always felt sorry for Winslow. Then I cheered when he kicked Swan's butt! Of course, the two scenes I cannot watch, aye, all these DECADES later, is the record plant scene (Tide won't get THAT out!) and the end, when he's dying and voicelessly pleads for help. I've watched this review and another one, where there is a brilliant video essay to the movie, character motivation and symbolism. Brilliant insights.

I love "the Phantom Of The Paradise", I think it falls in the same category as "The Princess Bride": cannot be classified into one genre. Like a platypus. Not exactly a mammal, but it's not a bird either: it transcends genre boundaries, making it a mixed bag of genre clichés in the exact amount to make it a fresh and quirky movie. In TPOTP's case not exactly a horror movie, not exactly a comedy, not exactly a musical, but to me the result is a perfect quirky movie, wonderfully supported by the catchy, similarly uncategorisable, soundtrack by Paul Williams. Add likeable characters, a decent plot, stylish visuals, good acting (the acting matches the style of the movie, but I can't tell whether it was on purpose or by accident) Which is exactly why I love this movie (and which is why I love the aforementioned "The Princess Bride", too) I think this is *the* reason why both movies failed at the box office, but gained a large cult-following: they're neither fish nor fowl. And then it's either marketing (the audience expects the wrong thing) or the audience doesn't *"get" * that the 'you can't put me in a box" is the whole shtick of the movie -and the quirkiness is lost on them.

I think this is one of the best explanations of this film, and a good reason why I still like it.
@poleaxed64476 жыл бұрын
I love the mixed nature of the film. Critically it bombed when originally released only to gain a cult following later on. It's most successful showings at the time were in Winnipeg in Canada where it became a run away success with annual screenings.

According to Science Netlinks..yup, it does. Does a platypus have three middle er bones? Yup . Do they have a lower jaw made from a single bone? Yup again. Body hair? Yesiree. A thoracic diaphragm? Sure do. A four chambered heart? Four yeses there. Viviporous? No. But it states" mostly", so. So, they are most certainly mammals. Weird ones, but, mammals none the less.

@tonymata80703 жыл бұрын
Ok I didn’t know that The Princess Bride is being planned for a remake, I have my doubts on that being good. But yeah, Phantom of the Paradise is a unique film and way ahead of its time and a remake would be kinda pointless. But I’ve been having a weird thought just now, I would love to see this animated in the style of anime. It would look striking especially the neon/gothic visuals but I’d keep it in the same time period it was made in… the 1970’s. But it’s just a thought I’m just having, I rather have this film be left alone and be rediscovered by new viewers.
@michaellangwaller7 жыл бұрын
Paradise is much like Rocky Horror Picture Show (POTP predates TRHPS by a year but was released a year after the premier of The Rocky Horror Show stage play), it was not popular when released but gained a substantial cult following later. In my opinion it is kinda like a horror/comedy/spoof/rock opera, sorta of a blend of Faust, Phantom of the Opera, Tommy (another movie POTP predates by a year but follows the stage performance/album), and Rocky Horror, a movie made for the sake of telling a story instead of making money. I was blown away when it first came on late night movie slot back in the 70's and have been a fan ever since. Of course there is Paul Williams, who is just always awesome.

When it comes to the book and most adaptions of it, I think Christine should either end up with Raoul or better yet, ditch both men and go off to have a fabulous singing career instead. But this movie? I'm like, "Winslow and Phoenix forever." Not only are they a genuinely sweet take on the Phantom/Christine pairing, they're presented as soulmates who are so in love they reincarnate to find each other throughout the ages, which is one of my favorite romance tropes. This was a fantastic review. I love this movie. And for the love of the gods, we NEED a "Phantom of the Paradise" stage musical. Seeing the story live would be amazing.

Dude you are funny. You remind me of Weird Al Yankavich without the glasses. Well I just had to watch your review on this movie because "Phantom of The Paradise" is one of my all time favorite Rock films. People talk about "Rocky Horror Picture Show" but The Phantom was the Rock film of the 70's. Though you look like you might have been a baby when this was released you at least have good taste in music and film. Paul Williams music in this movie and Album is brilliant. This is the movie that made me want to become a musician. I know I have probably seen this film well over a hundred times, and yes it did not have a great success in it's initial opening, but did you know it was re released in 1976 and found a much bigger audience? I saw it first time in 1975 a year after it's release, and at first was not sure if I liked it or not. But then certain points in the film kept popping up in my mind, I found myself humming the songs and wanting to hear them again, the characters were great, the battle between Swan and Winslow. The love triangle with Phoenix. Man this short little film packed a wallop! I think what you were saying if I am not mistaken is that you felt the same way I did about this movie. I am 60 yrs old now I was a teenager when I first saw it and I still love it. I've said it once and I will say it again The Phantom Rules!

All of my friends and I saw a lot of the not so mainstream films and stage performances in the Los Angeles area. We saw the Original "Kentucky Fried Theater" on Pico, before they ruined it by making it a film. However, the studios did an okay job making the Stage Musical "Rocky Horror" into a film, other than the fact they shrank Meatloaf's part. Phantom will always be Phantom. This is one of my top 20 favorite movies of all time, and my favorite De Palma film (yeah, even more than Scarface). You had it right...it's one of those rare films that's hard to categorize, which is part of what makes it so wonderful. My aunts used to play the soundtrack for me when I was a little kid, but I didnt actually see the movie until I was 14. The music was great, the casting was perfect, and the cinematography is amazing. I loved the use of split screen to do 2 one-shots at once, and that the overall feel of the movie was dark, like someone's bad dream. My favorite character is Beef, he cracks me up, and is the only thing that keeps this movie from being truly dark and depressing. I've been hoping for years that this would get remade somehow, only with a different touch to it (Swan as a hip hop mogul opening a club?). The campy feel in some of the shots is great also, because it adds almost like a graphic novel or comic book feel to it. If you look at a lot of the shots, they look like comic book panels. Great job on your review of this, and great choice. Thanks for doing it.

I'm just like Decker about this movie. I saw it once when I was a kid, and it was decades before I ran into anyone who had even heard of it, let alone seen it. It's a beautiful mix of genres, styles, tropes, classic fantasy, and tragic love stories all set to Paul Willaims music, who most people have forgotten he even exists these days. Its like Faust and the Rocky Horror Picture Show had a love child raised on 60's and 70's pop music culture instead of RKO and Universal horror movies. It's one of my favorite movies for a lot of reasons, not the least the trippy visual style that De Palma never topped, IMHO, that compliments the demonic fairytale like story to a T.

Not a word about Led Zeppelin and their production company that did everything to sink the movie ??? Because if the movie did bad, is also because of them....

loved this movie the first time i saw it, and more even afterwards. made a much bigger impression than other musical dramedies of the era like Little Shop of Horrors for instance. the fact is, the acting is overall not impressive and forgettable, except for Paul Williams'. And actually, if it were not for Paul Williams score on this, i don't think the movie could have stood the test of time for so long, despite the cool camera shots and angles by De Palma. For the funny story, for a long time i thought Paul Williams and John Williams (of Star Wars fame) were one and the same, i have a good excuse though 'cause i'm not a native english speaker....just don't tell anybody.

I LOVE this film - I only discovered this movie last year (and this channel like a few months ago which is why I am commenting now and not when the video was published), but I am so glad I bought this one sight unseen. The crazy thing is - I never even heard of this film. The ONLY reason I found it was because I was looking up a completely different movie on Amazon, and it suggested it under the "more titles you might like" category. Decker - love the review as always. Gotta say - I have had better luck showing this film to others - so far, everyone I have shown it to, has loved it as well. Of course - that might just mean I have really odd friends :D

Man, that was the most thorough and incredibly entertaining review I have ever witnessed. No shit brother, you did a Great Job! I too grew up with this movie.Even owned the album and blu ray (although I lost them in a fire many years, smh, which was a real bummer) Ive seen several times.Memorized the soundtrack when I was 6. The music Was hypnotic.It’s just something about the ambiance of the entire production the resonates something cool I guess. Anyway dude, you are so much on point with your perspective from what I truly believe is an immensely underrated timeless classic. Keep up the good work man, Peace

I understand your observations about this movie. I was fourteen when it came out, and (somehow) I saw it. And have been a fan of the movie, and the soundtrack ever since, and I'm not really sure how to explain why. (Especially the end song.) As always, thank you so very much for your video.

I bought and watched this movie on a whim well over twenty years ago. I dislike musicals but something about this movie I greatly enjoy, especially the crazy dance vibe of the ending.

Very Enjoyable. I've loved this movie since it's Premiere! To correct you, Phoenix was one of the painted face "nurses" building Beef (I think the middle seamstress). I always wondered how she got the paint off her face so fast. Black and white pancake takes awhile to remove!
