Can we appreciate the cinematography in this scene? The spinning paired with the phantom strangling the stage hand, and then after that first spin, the next shot is the head of the dancer. Each spin emphasizing the strangulation going on in the background. Makes it feel so much more tense than it would've been without those shots
@pillypuppy666 Жыл бұрын
Another thing that makes it so good is the use of dramatic irony, which is when we (the viewers) know more than the characters do. In this case, we know that the Phantom and the stage hand are both up there, one of them in BIG trouble, but the characters (apart from the Phantom and stage hand) are unaware. This keeps us waiting to find out, not what will happen, but when and how the characters will learn. Here's a link to a video about dramatic irony for those who want to know more. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIupiqiObZmhZ7c

Any musicians out there to appreciate the whispers of "What measure?" at 1:45? LOL so accurate Edit: Also, Carlotta may be a diva but she knows her music. "Tutti, Da Capo" she says, and I _believe_ she adds "for the second time" (I'm guessing that's what that means?) Funny thing is... as a musician I can say with confidence that that is exactly where they're starting again - at the tutti, the second time through, headed for the coda to this particular song.

...... You know what? Schumacher ACTUALLY translated this scene to the film medium rather well. He gave us a possible explanation for Carlotta losing her voice, implying that the Phantom messed with her stuff. He showed that actually shifting the performance to a ballet scene that occurs later on is a backstage nightmare while providing some genuinely funny scenes with the mastero, people scrambling to get ready and making fools of themselves and showing that the managers are rather incompetent. Meanwhile, we get the buildup with Piangi's death as he investigates, sees that its the Phantom and panics. And then Christine getting ready and noticing the rose left in her dressing room, realizing that the Phantom orchestrated the entire thing, justifying her panic to grab Raul and get themselves to safety. From humorous and terrifying in a film adaptation im not fond of... ...God, it almost hurts to contemplate looking at this movie again with older eyes...

The stage hand had found out about the Phantom. Erik realized this after the stage hand told horror stories about the Phantom to the ballerinas (At least, that's how it was when I saw it in the theatre. I haven't seen the movie). Erik didn't want his mystique to be shattered so he decided to silence the stage hand. Permanently.

How could the Phantom not give himself away in the shadows with that streak of white across his face?! Looks like music wasn't the only thing he mastered living in the opera house.

Before the death: Christine: Something feels a little...off, but I can't put my finger on it. Carlotta: What happened to my voice?!?! Maintenance dude (or whoever he was): I can't let him get me. If he does, I'm dead. The Phantom: Looks like my work here is- hang on! That's the man who saw me, and it seems he's going to tell everyone that I am here! I can't let him get away with this... After the death: Christine: I knew something was going to happen! Carlotta: OMG, what just happened?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I just realized why Erik kills the stage hand. He was peeping on Christine and being creepy with her.
@0rchid714 жыл бұрын
I feel bad for Erik and how he was treated as a child, but uh? Kidnapping a young woman trying to force her to fall in love with you and strangling and hanging a man right in front of a huge crowd? I feel like that’s taking it too far. I get he has terrible social skills due to being locked away from everyone since he was a child, but I feel like Webber could maybe not make him kidnap and manipulate Christine, and maybe not dangle a dead body over innocent people. It’s just too far
@fionarayward3173 жыл бұрын
I get what you’re on about, but the whole Christine thing happened in the book, which this was based on, so it’s a little unavoidable

Correction, Gaston Leroux wrote the book and Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music for the production.

@@pillypuppy666 i completely forgot about this comment. I hadn’t read the book at first, so I didn’t really know much about how the adaptation worked back then. I just wish Webber kept Raouls brother in, and also kept in the fact that Raoul knew Christine had something wrong with her. Still hate the phantom to this day though.

It shows how far someone is willing to go to be loved....The phantom is just madly in love... People do crazy things, when they're in love.
@0rchid71 Жыл бұрын
@@ingridmay66 oh yeah he was definitely madly something. My opinions of POTO def changed in the past three years, but I think it’s more obsession with Christine than love. He could’ve loved her a little, yeah, but he was way more obsessed with her just to be obsessed with her.

It's a cool scene and the sense of dread it creates is amazing but from a story standpoint... Why kill the guy? He basically murdered Christine's career in its crib pulling that. The guy wasn't even antagonizing him, he just did it for ego's sake it looks like.
