Kitty Flare Christine's biggest character trait is her compassion, even for a rage-fueled killer like Erik. Man, this scene always gets me - because how awful for Christine, that she can no longer think of her father without the Phantom trying to corrupt it, trying to insert himself and his manipulations into it. He uses the memory of her father against Christine, and just... how awful, because you know later, after it was all done, she would have to carefully set those memories aside.

I know they had Raoul win the fight and be in a position to kill Erik and then have Christine step in to protect Erik all to prove that through it all, she still cared for Erik, but I think it would've been much more powerful (and much more compliant with Erik's character) to have Erik and Raoul's positions reversed. Have Erik win and be in a position to kill the man who he knew all along would take Christine's love from him, but have him spare Raoul for the sole reason that Christine wanted him to. He would've had every reason to kill Raoul, would've been mere inches away from doing it, but realized Christine would never forgive him if he did it and therefore let the boy live. Idk, I just think it would've been much more poignant and thought-provoking. Also Erik is supposed to be good at everything, a true unearthly genius, _especially_ in the art of fighting and killing, so it also literally just doesn't even make sense to have him lose to a boy half his age lol

That's actually kind of how the ending of the book goes. The Persian and Raoul are done for as they drown beneath the house in the lake, Christine pleads to the Phantom to spare their lives, out of his love for her and the joy that has accepted to become his wife he complies to her wishes. Then as he is weeping at the hem of Christine's dress she cries with him and lets him kiss her forehead, something no one in his life had ever done and that's how he decides to let Christine free with Raoul and even gives her the ring he bought for their wedding (Erik's and Christine's) and tells her "this is your wedding gift, for you and for him, from your poor unfortunate, Erik"😓

It's perfectly fine to root for the villain, or to like the villain more than the good guy, but those in the comments who are literally denying that Erik is the bad guy.... He literally murdered two people. The stage manager and Corlotta's lover. You don't have to like Raoul, but he is for sure a better person as he hasn't killed anybody. Also Raoul is a far better suitor for Christine considering Raoul doesn't pretend to be her father's ghost, kidnap her, or threaten to kill a person to make her his girlfriend. . Long story short, you can certainly prefer Phantom over Raoul or even root for him to beat Raoul, but saying that Erik is the better person or partner is delusional.

Funnier still when you consider ALW actually massively downplays the extent of the Phantom's murderous insanity in his musical versus the book. He kills a bunch more people, attempts to cook alive Raoul and the guy who raised him for trying to save Christine, and also tries to blow up/burn down the opera house while it's filled with hundreds of people. And then you get demented loons being like 'oH thE PhaNTOm IS so rOMAnTIc'

@@Blisterdude123Tbh the musical meant to be more romantic compared to the book, and honestly yeah no The Phantom is a manipulative killer, though I think people like him more, or at least I do, because in a twisted way, he did it all for her, because even in the first scene him scarring Carlotta away made a spot for Christine to shine, in his own way, he showed his love for her, and I will point out, he has a compelling backstory, being a monster to everyone since birth, he just embraces what everyone makes him out to be, he plays the part of the monster, not as his true artistic self, it’s still fucked up what he did, considering he has at least two confirmed kills, maybe perhaps a dozen from the chandelier, and terrorizing a whole Theatre, but we feel for The Phantom because many can relate of wanting to be loved, only to be turned away, and he’s even more tragic when you also consider that his mother gave him a mask as his first piece of clothing. TL:DR: He’s a incel prick, with a tragic backstory, and a very (*TWISTED*) yandere-like love for Christine, and we honestly feel for him because he had a tragic upbringing that we can relate. And also because he’s cool and angsty.

Erik is a complete *genius;* he can fight sword (the novel doesn't say that, though), he's an architect, musician, 100% artist, and a magician. Besides that he's intense, lovable and gives his soul to EVERYTHING, including loving, protecting and raising Christine. The problem is that anybody gave him the chance of showing his genius because of his deformed face; he was abused by everyone, including his mother. Minus his "insane moment" in the ending, which was cured by Christine's kindness, he was OBVIOUSLY the best choice. And his cave isn't dirty, he was planning to buy a house for them as in the novel. Well, anyway 😂

One question. Why is this comment section (as well as all others of this movie): 45% people loving the version and the actors 45% people hating literally everything from Gerard's voice to the fight 10% people throwing random facts or comparing the musical/movie to the book And I am just confused, still trying to enjoy stuff tho

For anyone who thinks Erik would not have lost this fight, I fully see where you're coming from but A. Erik probably hasn't fought against another person in awhile and B. He had Raoul on the ropes for pretty much the whole fight. Raoul literally just get lucky with being strong enough to disarm him.

Here’s the thing though…Erik would NEVER put himself into a position to lose to Raoul, NEVER, he is way too smart for that. Erik uses his brain to gain the advantage not his muscles, hence him fooling everyone into thinking he’s an actual Ghost…he is a master magician, and a genius. And second a sword fight is frankly too ‘normal’ for him, this Man is the very definition of THEATRICAL, and a physical fight is how normal guys deal with their differences, Erik is not a normal guy, he wouldn’t even bother with that crap. Erik would either have Raoul at the end of his noose in the blink of an eye like in the final lair, of he’d make a big show of trying to intimidate him with something dramatic, like the fireballs in the Stage Show. I feel Schumacher wanted the sword fight more for Raoul’s sake, to make him into more of a Romantic Hero, but it completely undermined Eriks character in my opinion.

+Emii64 True, but he shouldn't have been chosen for the role if he had never had singing lessons. POTO is a musical that can't afford mediocrity. Gerard was chosen for sex appeal, not singing talent. Sure, he can carry a tune, but you have to be able to do more than that if you're playing the title role of this musical.

This version of wandering child will always be better than the 25th anniversary one. Adding Raoul in just made no sense and it didn’t sound good at all, it sounded so messed up, I couldn’t tell what was being sung, the only good bit was Ramin coming through at the end with that low note. In this you can actually hear what they are saying and it focuses on Erik and Christine
@mieshocked1450

I can't hold this scene of the musical, i found it kinda nonsense because Leroux Erik would never pretend being her *father* (the angel, yes, but father? Nope). But, i understand what both Christine and Erik feel on this scene, and i hope some annoying brainless people can understand that Erik is not "perverse", evil or anything like this. Christine lost her father, she is sad because of it. She is alone. Erik loves her more than anything on his life, and no, it is not "obsession" or false love, use your brain a little and try to understand the message of the Final Lair and how much noble Erik always was. Erik pretended to be her angel of music because he was afraid of showing himself as a normal man, he was abused and shunned for years and he just... doesn't feel worthy anymore. Only at "The Final Lair" is that he understand how much human he was and let her go because he loved her more than anyone did. Anyway, he wanted to protect Christine. He HATED to see her sad, defenseless, lonely... he saw himself on her. Being her "angel" would protect her, but once he falls in love with her and shows himself as a mortal human (and the feared The Phantom of The Opera), Christine started to feel uncorfutable at his side. It is not her or his fault, she was only scared. Erik thought "so, not being her angel but a man scares her? So i'll be a pathernal figure". The musical is veeeeery poetic and romantic, so no, i do NOT believe he was literally pretending to be Christine's father, he tried to be some kind of pathernal figure to make her happier, and then he could marry her. He had a horrible life and his father didn't love him, it is not his fault that he doesn't know how to deal with emontions. If you blame him for this, you're a jerk. The same way Christine was scared and sad missing her daddy, Erik was abused all of his life and he couldn't adapt 100% to a normal life. Both did wrong things based on what they lived, if you blame Erik and defend 10000% Christine... hipocrisy, is that the name?

Because - as much as I love this movie - it was poorly done on many levels. See Lindsey Ellis' video on the Schumacher version. A lot of it was ALW's meddling tbh. I think the cast did their best with what they were given. As far as the disfigurement, the mask he wore for Don Juan just physically wouldn't work. It just doesn't cover it all. And when she takes it off, you can see just before that there's... something there underneath, and a wig/hairpiece comes off with it, but still. In the 2011 stage version (might still be on Netflix?) he's wearing a completely hooded cowl for Don Juan and it just works much better physically speaking. I mean, obviously the Phantom is not Piangi in this version, but with the hooded cloak, there's a lot more anonymity.
