Phar Lap was the combination of Seabiscuit, and Secretariat. He was bigger than Secretariat, standing tall at 17.2hh, and he was, to some, much more red than Man O' War. Unlike Secretariat and Man O' War, however, he was called the Red Terror

Secretariats heart was a bit bigger than Phar Laps and proved his tremendous ability in the Belmont beating his strongest opponent by over 30 lengths and the world record time for the distance. He showed the ability that he could flat sprint for 2 miles which is incredible in ANY time period. But Phar Lap was by FAR a much tougher horse. He won his races sick, injured, run down and carrying great weights most or all in very decent race times. There will never be a horse like either of those two

As for the Aqua Caliente, it was supposed to be a match race between "the Red Terror" (Phar Lap) and "the Chocolate Soldier" (Equipoise). Equipoise did not compete, but absolutely thrashed Gallant Sir who won the race for the next two years after Phar Lap. Another notable Seabiscuit broke Phar Lap's record in winning the Aqua. Great times. That was a time when there were real champions around. As a New Zealander, Equipoise is every bit as good as Phar Lap.

Everytime I go on utube I play this video, a stunning tribute to one of the worlds greatest racehorses.....well done to you. Although I can understand why they stuffed him and put him in a museum, I cant help thinking that an end most befitting of such a racing great should be to be buried in first place at the finish line as that is where Pharlap spent most of his time....... there, and in the hearts of the millions of people whose lives he touched with his courage and presence.

@rscarbro100 Phar Lap's Caliente Handicap, William Robertson wrote, "Phar Lap broke well as his trainer predicted. However, he went immediately to the outside for an inspection tour of the 1 1/8 mi. chute which slanted into the track a furlong farther on, and passing the grandstand the first time around he was fully 50 yards behind the pack. Having satisfied his (or his jockey's) curiosity, Phar Lap then bounded into the lead."

@rscarbro100 Longden's recollection is almost correct - after a quarter mile, the big gelding took the lead and simply never looked back, winning with contemptuous ease by two lengths from Reveille Boy with Scrimitar another two lengths back in third. Despite never truly extending himself, Phar Lap set a new track record of 2:02 4/5.Without forgetting his cracked hoof.

Phar Lap is the best race horse flick to be made so far. No disrespect to Seabiscuit fans but I think Phar Lap is a superior movie, even now, considering it as made in the early 80's. I think the makers of Seabiscuit might have ripped their ideas from Phar Lap. Gotta see it if you haven't already!

For 'Stalga3' Phar Laps record for the AJC Derby was actually broken by Tulloch, no smashed by Tulloch who took 2 seconds off his time. The same Tulloch who set a worlds record time for a mile and a half when he won the Caulfield Cup as a 3yo. Tulloch was the most dominant 3yo ever to race in Australia wining 14 of his 16 starts in his classic year. If it weren't for the fact that he missed 18 months through illness where he nearly died Tulloch would certainly established a record unprecedented

Ron Turcotte was 130 pounds when he rode Secretariat to the Triple Crown. Phar Lap's jockey in the 1930 Melbourne Cup weighed 138. Do you think Big Red cared about 8 extra pounds, that it slowed him down so much LOL. Phar Lap took 3 minutes and 27 seconds to cover 2 miles in 1930. Secretariat ran a 2:41 1-5/8 mile (Canadian) and would have finished 2 miles in around 3:17. Secretariat's son has the track record at the Melbourne (3:16). Sec would have blown Phar Lap out of the water, no matter what distance they ran!

Phar Lap (NZ) is a New Zealand bred racehorse, and American owned. He is only famous, as he was the only horse racing in Australia that got anywhere near America. Horses like Northen Dancer, Secretariat, Eclipse and Man O' War are better known elsewhere. A race was set up with Equipoise, the Chocolate Soldier. If Phar Lap had beaten that one... He was unproven against the greats. He came against his famous brother Nightmarch in the Mebourne Cup, and was beaten.

That's not what happened. In Mexico, the expert trainers there told Tommy Woodcock to change to different shoes (because of the track serface difference). Tommy didn't do it and phar Lap caught a stone in training, which cracked the hoof wall. So get the right info before trying to answer. Phar Lap is a Legend- and the correct story should be told...

Equipoise? Both he and Phar Lap had 51 Starts, Equipoise won 29, Phar Lap 37. Equipoise only rated 21st on USA all time list. Phar Lap, saw him in Melbourne, 2006 and some 20 children no older than 10 all burst into the room fighting for a glimpse of Big Red. His feats speak for themselves and his legend lives on 70+ years later in the eyes of those not yet old enough to wager a bet on this argument. He's always the benchmark and any modern day champion is always "the best since PHAP LAP!"

@rscarbro100Phar Lap came to North America well in advance of the big race (he actually landed in San Francisco before journeying south),most knowledgeable horsemen scoffed at the way he was prepared for the event. None of the usual training methods were used for the Australian superstar. Instead, he was ridden by Tom Woodcock, who was training him for the Handicap, and at that seldom on the racetrack itself but rather over the local terrain including uphill over sandy knolls.

@rscarbro100 His next race was the Agua Caliente Handicap at the Agua Caliente Jockey Club near Tijuana in Mexico. With Tom Woodcock as trainer, Phar Lap traveled to America by ship, with his own exercise enclosure and sand-box. Despite his long sea journey and a badly injured hoof, Phar Lap won the race, in record time for the track.

@rscarbro100 As a four-year-old Phar Lap won fourteen consecutive stakes, including the Melbourne Cup under 138 pounds. In the century-plus history of Australia's greatest race, only three times has it been won under higher weight. At five the big gelding was eight for nine, his sole loss having been in the Cup, in which he carried 150 pounds and the winner 98.

Amazes me how few people understand that virtually any horse racing in Phar Lap's era was being fed tonics that included arsenic, along with other ingredients that are still, to this day, used in homeopathic remedies. The most common ingredients were used to prevent or minimise colic and cramp. They were legal at the time, and cannot in any way be accurately compared to performance-enhancing substances like the use of anabolic steroids in human athletes.

The great thing about Phar Lap was that they just could not stop him winning. They handicapped him again and again, with more and more weight, but still he kept winning. If he wasn't murdered by the gangsters, he would have proved his greatness beyond a doubt. And, Junmai, if you're talking about a career, then Kincsem craps on Man o' War. 54 starts, 54 wins.

Phar Lap & Nightmarch were not brothers, they shared the same sire, in the game of racing thats not the same thing. Nightmarch was another grand Kiwi racehorse yet not in the same league. Yes he beat The Red Terror in 1929, but Phar Lap was only a 3 yr old running in the cup 3 days after smashing the race record for The Derby. In 1930 he won on all 4 days of the carnival, inclusive of the cup, anyone with half a nut will tell you this feat will never be repeated. He was the greatest bar none.

You can not compare horses from different eras. Phar Lap dominated the tracks in the 1930s, whilst Sec was a star in the 1970s. That's a 40 year time gap, a huge amount of time for horse racing and technology to evolve. A horse in the 30s would have never had access to the medical practices, balanced feeds, training techniques, farriers, racing surfaces, jockey riding styles etc that a horse in the 70s had. What would have Sec been like in the 30s, or what would have Phar Lap done in the 70s?
