To be able to pull that kind of crew together. ICONIC. If you haven't watched, Miles Electric - A Different Kind of Blue, I highly recommend it. They actually interview Airto and several others from that time period of music.

Davis had written simple chord lines, at first for three pianos, which he expanded into a sketch of a larger scale composition. He presented the group with some "musical sketches" and told them they could play anything that came to mind as long as they play off of his chosen chord.

why not 6 tubas and 14 vibraphones all playing free with periodic blurps and bleeps of a few trumpet notes?

I'm trying really hare to appreciate this, but it's really hard for me! My overall impression is of a song that's been pounded apart and thrown back down; and my job is to accept the musical outcome. Why is it so discordant? I can hear that every member of the band has talent, but they only showcase the one note at a time! PlwAW Mow mw understand what I'm hearing!

Well its a very overrated album from a very overrated player. Honestly I don't think you are missing anything! If you want high level examples of this style, gravitate towards Charles Mingus, especially Black Saint and the Sinner Lady imo. Cheers!
