Hey Tyler, I like your videos. I like the format you use and your analogies. I do have a suggestion or two. First, you say that you add or remove "heat": what you really should say is that you add or remove "Thermal Energy". Technical and a bit nick picky, I know, but there is a difference. Secondly, not sure if you know about PhET, but they have a great simulation that you could work into your video. The thing I really like about the simulation is that is shows exactly what happens to water as it freezes that demonstrates how/why water actually expands when it freezes. The particles arrangement is the key. It is a little different than the one you show. Here's the link if you're interested. phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/states-of-matter
@tdewitt45110 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. "Thermal Energy" is the correct term. But these videos are designed for the most basic learners, such as the middle schoolers that I teach. I made a conscious choice not to use "Thermal Energy," because I've found that jargon is one of the fastest ways to make kids hate science. "Heat" is something that students have real-world, previous experience with, so they can build mental models with the concept of heat. "Thermal energy" doesn't mean anything to a 12 year-old, so they can't immediately connect the concept to something they already know. You and I may disagree on this issue, and I respect your opinion, but for me, I'll always choose the quickly understandable, relatable explanation above the more obscure, 100% technically accurate one. At least when I'm teaching young learners. If you're interested, I did a TED Talk about this concept: you can find it on the TED.com website under my name.

Sorry, I am not trolling anyone here, because I am just taking Chem II right now, but I am thankful for +Tyler DeWitt style of teaching. These videos are what help me grasp the concepts and help me pass my chem exams, instead of the actual instructor that is teaching the lesson and writing the exam. I have to say this is my favorite part, "If you're interested, I did a TED Talk about this concept: you can find it on the TED.com website under my name." "Under my name" LOL But in all honesty I see your point +Colleen Windell, I am assuming you don't want us to water down the subject, but instead raise to the occasion and understand it on a very technical level, but not all of us are trying to become Chem majors. P.S. I love the PhET simulation.

Just in case some of you didn't know, the process of a solid phase going to a gas phase is sublimation. From gas to solid it is called re-sublimation.
