Here's the last block on the 2900 road unit. Last day of cutting and the first day of trucking. I got close to getting done before I fouled everybody up with my gates on the road, but not quite close enough! Some cutting and thinking out loud to go along with it. Hope you enjoy it!

Another awesome video… we never use the gates here. Sometimes there’s 4 bunchers on 1 block.most of the time I’m ahead cutting new right away, out for the up coming blocks, after I get ahead I start leveling the block, when the crew arrives I go on to the next one. We usually have 4 bunchers 6 grapple skidders 948L and 8 processors. Blocks consist of 400 to 600 7 axel loads. You may wonder why we’re cutting roads out so far…this is so it can freeze in Keep them coming Jason Love it Craig bc Canada

Holy mackerel Craig, you should be putting together some vids! I sure would like to see some footage of your show. That's a lot of iron. I hear you on the freeze up, then it's a mad race against spring break up right? Appreciate your support, be safe out there!

Hey Jason, Great video, great topic. So many chances for things to go bad in this type of situation. What I tend to do is start cutting after the first round of trucks have left and cut later in the day when everyone has left. I find this means I am not slowed down too much and I do not have to worry about the trucks. Have a great weekend !

Yeah, that sounds like a good solution. Doesn't always work, just like for me in this case where I did what I could to get the road side knocked out without log or rock truck traffic but still ran into it with this last little block. I agree though, it's worth avoiding the conflict whenever it's possible. I think the best solution is to get ahead on the phases, so the cutting, Bunching or hand falling, is done done separately and finished prior to logging. Even the phases of the logging can benefit from it. We are working toward that with the involved parties, I'm looking forward to it, it's a long process to get there.

Happy '23 Mr and Mrs Jason! Safety is a fickle thing no less than money...........everyone wants it, few have it, and it takes an incredible amount of time to get it. A few overlooked decisions and poof, you no longer have it. All parties involved also have to buy into the idear and share a common discipline to maintain it as well. Safe cuttin pard

Well said! You might be able to get away with an unsafe practice once, maybe twice, maybe more times. But sooner or later its going to get you or somebody around you. The common discipline you mention as well, absolutely critical to maintaining safety. It's also critical in that the burden of shouldering the costs of being safe be shared by everyone involved, not just the high profile players while allowing shady outfits disappear into the shadows because they work cheap and make the numbers look good for the powers that be. Thanks for the comment, I agree! Happy New Year to you, hope it's a good one for us all!

Working forests.... that's an excellent comment. I remember a job I did skidding through a cattle pasture and having to open and close a fence gate every skid!

Thank you! Had to slip a little bit of that in for those folks who think 2x4's come from Home Depot and paper towels from the grocery store! Every turn, wow, that would be a lot of opening and closing! Sure beats chasing the cows around though, right! Hope that cold weather is heading your way, it's funny how cold it sounds down south and east and you're being shorted on the freeze up in the north. Good cuttin to ya!

Thanks. I can't help repeating some important topics sometimes. Logging rates, externalized costs, the importance of the timber industry, the contributions of working forests to everyone's lives, all stuff that bears repeating. Thanks for the comment!

Same deal in Coastal BC, Van isle. Our mainlines you sometimes will have 2-3 active falling zones to pass through. The “gates” here are simply a sign strung on two ropes across the road. Reads “active falling contact … for clearance”

Copy. Yeah, down here it's an OSHA reg, up your way I guess it's L+I, same difference. We're on Weyco ground so they of course are quite specific about safety, which I totally support. I am going to have to do a segment on the gates I cooked up for closure, like I said in the video they are the best solution I've come up with so far. They're really easy for me to jump around as I move through a unit, which keeps them close for positive radio communication. And even though it still requires a driver getting out to swing them open and shut, it's a pretty slick procedure. Not that it doesn't mean that some of them still bitch about it though! Hey, better than wearing one of my trees on their cab right? Thanks for the comment, be safe!

Very good video. I was wondering if the antenna works better under the boom rather than in the cab where mine was installed. Thank you Jason

Hey thanks! I have been really happy with this antenna mount I set up. The antenna, the mount and the coax have all held up to the abuse the best I've ever had and still gets out pretty well. I'm not a big talk on the radio fan myself, it's useful on occasion and required for truck comm and this does the trick. I've been told that you don't want to have the antenna in the cab because of the microwave radiation that it puts out when the radio transmits. Don't know if that's true or not but I recommend the under the boom setup! Thanks man, good cuttin to ya!

That's a good question. These trees were planted in a tree farm and are about 40 years old. They are a crop, and are mature, so we are harvesting them for the landowner. They will be used primarily for lumber, but also for fiber used for paper products. The timber harvesting process is heavily regulated, so all aspects of it are designed and implemented in a way as to reduce the impacts of it on the soil and water. After the timber has been harvested the site will be replanted and the cycle will begin again. Replanting, and adequate, healthy stocking of the site are required by law to ensure that the working forested landscape will remain productive, and will continue to contribute to the clean water, carbon storage and clean air that healthy forests create. When implemented in this manner, responsible, sustainable forest management like this also supports the economies of rural areas throughout the U.S. and around the world. Thanks for asking, and for watching, we appreciate it.

It's funny you should ask, we've got one that's just pure gravy train, nothing to be said, the wood and the ground speak for itself - keep an eye out for it! Thanks for the comment and for watching! Be safe.
