Phase DJ Review - Why it's finally worth it in 2020

I have them since software V2.0 and I love them since the beginning. V5.0 just came out and they are better then ever. Basically ditched the needles completely except when playing real vinyl. There is so much space on my TTs. No accidental touching of the tone arm and such. And it is a breeze to work with. You only have to plug the tone arm contacts for the needles or they will corrode which will be a pita later when you try to use needles again

Great video Si. I've been waiting to take the plunge. Considering the price of needles these days the pricepoint isnt too crazy. Going to wait to see how well the hid mode tightens things up. (I do wonder if there might be an updated unit on horizon...?)

Hmm yeah that's the trouble with these things, you never really know what's around the corner. Seems like it'd still be a nice unit except without all the RCA cables. But yeah, no one wants to be the person who gets it brand new then something else comes out! That's happened to me more times than I'd care to remember hehe

Thank you for the review. I have a pair of 1200's that have RCA issues and possible tonearm tracking. I'm really thinking of Phase as a "workaround" from fixing the tables since now prices on 1200 parts are so much. Since I'm not using these in the professional setting I think they should be great, also I just happy to get away from needles.

Hi, thank for doing this. And for clarifying there isn't a Phase 2.0, it's the firmware that's updated. I have a question would appreciate help if possible.. Looking for the cheapest way to get my brother mixing in Serato. If I get Serato dj pro, and MWM Phase, is a DVS enabled mixer still needed? Aim is to be able to use Serato with his current setup, Technics 1210s, unsure of his mixer. I think it's a behringer with a USB port. All the best

@@PatrickTT it only works in relative mode - you'll need to use a separate midi controller to track through the record / load cue points.

The idea behind these is really cool but using two devices that rely on batteries and wireless sync seems like adding multiple points of potential failure which makes me wonder if it's really worth the convenience or novelty factor. Bad phono leads are cheap to replace, I suppose a bad stylus is less so but at least you could quickly borrow one from someone else :-)

I don't see it that way. I see it as an extra you can add to your set up to mitigate potential problems. Say you get to a venue and the TT's have bad leads, whatcha gonna do? Also good for at home where there's nothing at stake... You can save some wear and tear on your needles and records. Deffo a good option to have in your bag!

I would be curious to know how long the batteries will last before they are just worn out and need to be replaced. It's too bad they didn't build them with replacement in mind, there's nothing on their website about it. So I guess you're stuck paying another $400 down the line when they fail.

Great vid! But one thing that I don’t see anyone explain is, how does it read the vinyl grooves without spinning or hovering over the grooves? Do you download the digital version of the track first and it merely acts as a position tracker?

Yes, exactly. The tune will be playing via your computer, the Phase maps or at least tracks where that tune is on the vinyl.

Ya. The high pitched noise was the timecode that you only heard if you played your serato record in phono. You don't even need a record for phase to work

It's just how strong the signal is. So for traditional dvs that goes through cartridges and crappy turntable cables and stuff you could end up with a dodgy circle. That essentially meant you were going to have a bad night DJing. So seeing a perfect circle every time just signifies the end of an those kinds of woes!

Not at all. You could use it without the turntable plugged in to the mixer actually. It's sending the signal wirelessly

This will make it easy for every wanna be DJ and will not have to work hard to acquire skills at their craft. I've DJ'd since the late 70's and i know this is motivated solely by greed. Urban american started this Art form and Corporate American will destroy it. Mark my word....
