Podcast is Called : ASN Humans Are Space Orcs , HFY and other stories
--------------
This Story is Classified as HFY or Humanity Feck, Yea , but what does the Mean?
-------------
HFY is a story/series that takes a “human element” in either humanity or an “other” (race/species or object) that exists in a “setting” (future or other world/universe) with varying levels of culture, technology, society and history that help show in some shape or form the potential good or bad for humanity’s race/culture. In These stories Humans are often referred to as Human, Humanity, Deathworlder, Hellwolder in reference to the human planet of origin , Earth. This planet is seen by most of the universe as a place where only death and chaos can survive.
-------------
Taken from the FAQ of the r/HFY subreddit.
Humans Are Space Orcs (HASO) or Humans Are (Fantasy Race) Are used as a guide when writing.
In these Stories we normally View humans like the other races view orcs in a Fantasy Novel. We (Humans) share the same characteristics and personalities as orcs. Humans are normally treated as the outsiders and barbarians. Humans tend to be underestimated as well in these stories. Unlike Humanity Feck Yea , these don't always put a positive spin on humans\humanity sometimes looking at the darker side of human and humanity from the perspective of aliens.

Story is definitely a 1 of xx chapters, since there are way too many unfinished threads here. Mostly just want to know what moron think shooting "naked" anti-mater projectiles is a good idea since while space is "mostly" empty, it is still filled with particulate matter. Imagine a speck of dust just floating inches in front of the barrel or whatever they are using to push those projectiles. **Kaaabooooom!**

Greetings Mentlegent! for the Rhyhtm that is Algo Er, pretty sure that is EXACTLY how FTL works, except for the going through planets part. That said, this is the beginning of a story, the antimatter attacks are not explained. If it's the beginning of a series, well and good, but it doesn't stand on it's own.

So... no real conclusion? Just the mystery of someone shooting antimatter at the sun, and then finding out where they might have come from, and then nothing? Did this author work at Bad Robot or something?

The problem here is that nothing in the story title indicates that this is a multipart story. Without such indicators, the default assumption is that the story is a stand alone

@@azurah2751 Then why isn't it labeled "Part 1"? Why is it being read here in this video by Agro without the usual indicators he places, i.e. "Ch. 1" or somesuch? If there's gonna be a part 2 you need to TELL people it.

My guess would be that antimatter was more a scanning method, perhaps they could discern something by the interaction of the particle with the Sun

The sheer improbability of putting 2 PARTICLES on a collision course accross hundreds of thousands of kilometres is the one thing that makes it really difficult for me to suspend my disbelief. Honestly, as far as hypothetical science goes, this story is far from the best.

There's also the fact that if they're all going to hit the sun in sequence the grains wouldn't even be on the same path to ball up. Fortunately that bit is completely irrelevant to the plot and can be ignored.

@SoMuchFacepalm
@SoMuchFacepalm Жыл бұрын
@@katzeletsplayxx6651 How is that different? You're still moving the field or space or whatever, at FTL in order to achieve FTL relocation without moving FTL in real space or using dimensional travel. Unless OP meant warp in the 40K sense.
@katzeletsplayxx6651
@katzeletsplayxx6651 Жыл бұрын
@somuchfacepalm8451 the 2 field warp drive, uses gravity fields to do so, which move you like riding a very very large wave. So you would probably be going FTL in real space
@SeedlingNL
@SeedlingNL Жыл бұрын
A warp drive distorts space, whereas a phase drive ignores it entirely. Everything within the field is rendered almost entirely massless from the universe's perspective, so any application of momentum has a huge effect, while being all but undetectable to until you drop the field. The only issue I have with this concept, is that any straight photon would have you bounce all over the place... and a massive gamma ray burst from a matter-antimatter annihilation would kick you 1 AU...
@SoMuchFacepalm
@SoMuchFacepalm Жыл бұрын
@@SeedlingNL "whereas a phase drive ignores it entirely" Isn't that the FTL from mass Effect? Also it would only allow you to move at lightspeed IF you negated mass completely. You still can't go faster than light, for the same reason light can't go faster. Also also, light wouldn't have that much effect. Assuming that a photon only carries the same momentum as a massless atom (it should be a lot less) then each photon of CMB would confer 299,792,458 divided by 8491 x 1022000 meters per second of delta V, assuming your ship was about one ton of iron, or the same number of atoms as a small car.

Hmmm, I don't think the antimatter was an attack, if it was a series of single particles aimed at the sun, it would have done very little to the sun while creating a series of flashes pointing to their origin system, giving us a way to know that someone is out there.

Hell of a way to say "hello". The drone reported "weak" in-system signals in the originating (note, unnamed) system suggesting to me at least that the senders may not know Sol system is inhabited. They may just be dickinng around (doing what they consider valid research), seeing how much antimatter it takes to destabilize our kind of star. Why would they want to do that? Artificial supernova instead of star lifting maybe, could be weapon research, could be their version of "Hold my beer".
@SeedlingNL

@@markfergerson2145 it's possible the aliens mistook matter/anti-matter interaction in our atmosphere for communications. Some lightning bolts carry so much energy that anti-matter can form, but is immediately annihilated by the atmosphere.

So many physics issues in this.... Either they have diffrent fundamental laws of nature or the writer made minor mistakes that when taken into affect on the larger systems that depend on them result in horrific things... Like the idea that you can engage an inertial dampener to such an extent as to lock your physical location in the universe.... without realizing that the solar system is also zipping along at tremendous speeds and would immidiatly shoot away from you... would be wild to see. Also the particles would not hit each other and stop, unless they were able to somehow shed their energy.... If they couldn't they would bounce off of each other.... if they could.... Then they wouldn't move as a clump, one would come in and the last atom on the opposing end would launch leaving the other two still... Like the table top cradle thing with the steel balls on string.

The point is phase drives are magic. They allow FTL without needing actual spaceships, and then (in a moment that somehow completely surprised the physicists and engineers who designed and built the things and worked out how to get them right) they also let you pass through matter with no ill effects whatsoever. Whew, dodged a bullet there. Also they're basically perfect shields, as a station took a direct hit from an antimatter projectile and survived. It's sure a good thing space travel is safe!
