. In this lecture we discuss the most important (and perhaps most complex) set of ideas that Kant introduced to the philosophy of Aesthetics. Here Kant distinguishes between free/pure beauty and dependent/impure beauty. The basic distinction is that free/pure beauty is a beauty we can appreciate entirely with the senses, it is not an emotional beauty, and it cannot be explained in concepts. In contrast, dependent/impure beauty is a form of beauty that comes from the close link between the ideas in a work of art and the way in which those ideas harmonize with aesthetic qualities of the art. We explain and illustrate these ideas with several examples from painting, music, sculpture and photography. This lecture also discusses disinterestedness.
