I'm sure all the Phil Collins fans who love this song are as surprised (shocked) to discover what this song isn't about....its a song about a man having to face divorce and the pain and anguish that ending a marriage entails....you question yourself ...you question every thing you've ever done, your mind tortures you and your heart feels like its been ripped out of your chest leaving only a gaping hole were it once was and yet you know you have to go on because if you don't......you will destroy yourself into so many pieces that nothing or no one can ever bring you back, you can see that even years later in this interview his eyes water up when he thinks of the great loss....Phil brought himself back thru his music and this song and as he says its just a song and now I'm known for it....these words remind me of John Lennon when he's talking to a fan who had jumped over the fence of his home in England the fan questions John about one of his songs and asks intently what does it mean like he's come to a sage and wants to know the meaning of life....and John with Yoko standing next to him says simply "some times a song is just a song".....

God the rumours that went around when I was in high school about this song and the back story to it were rife. We didn't have internet eccetera. Basically everyone was saying that Phil actually witnessed a drowning from a cliff and saw that somebody walked by on the beach and did not help them. Somehow Phil found out who that person was and sent him a ticket for the the front row of one of his shows and sang it directly to him and pointed him out and apparently that man in the audience cried. Good story but bloody bollocks. ✌

As stories go, it is a good myth of a story behind a song, and for a while, Phil did NOT deny the story. That didn't help to destroy the myth. Then again, what if it really is about the drowning and not the breakup, but he is just telling another story? People will believe what they want.

I have lived in Miami, FL all my life and in the mid 80's you could regularly see production crews filming Miami Vice in and around Miami. Back then they did a lot of on-location shooting and I used to cruise the city playing this tune and it never failed to give that Vice "vibe". I still sometimes take a ride at night and will play this tune and it STILL gives you that same same 80's vibe from yesteryear. The 80's drug wars was a bad period made just a little better by the greatest music of all time... and I survived it.

Although it's been 35 years, Miami Vice is one show that will never die and will always retain it's appeal for being the greatest show of it's time which defined the very decade it was made. Interestingly, in the episode his name was Phil Mayhew and I understand they wanted him to come back to appear in a second episode but Phil's touring schedule during that period was insane, and although he really wanted to come back for another episode, he just couldn't fit it into his busy schedule. I really wish he could have done a second one though.

I mean, you have a song like "Goodbye Norma Jean/Goodbye England's Rose" that taps into a specific mood about a specific event, but in general, the emotional life of humans is in themes; and music connects people by touching our emotions, by tapping into themes. This album happens to be about the theme of anger, disappointment, and a sense of betrayal. It's not about whether it's right or wrong for anybody to feel what they feel. I honestly believe looking back now I’m 44 and was a little kid in the 80’s of course I remember Phil Collins and Genesis. Now I look back and listen to the genius in the synth sounds and drums and drum programming. My Best Memory of this song was it was in late 90's Friday night I am staying at The Isle of Capri Resort /Casino in Biloxi Mississippi and my luck at the slots had not been all that good so I climbed in my PuddleJumper Pickup and drove down Highway 90 to Gulfport. It must have been about 9:30 and the Gulf of Mexico which runs paralel to 90 was dead calm and the mon was full and shining down. I enjoyed this, and to hear the brutal honesty of it all. I have that track on a 12 inch vinyl and it is still one of my favourites to this day. People may have got angry when Phil Collins produced this, but is not music, a form of therapy ? And far better to let it out through Music ! Than keeping the anger with in.

4:42 and if it was any other drum fill it would have been just as smashing because if it passed through his psyche and came out of him, through his body, and passed his muster, it would have been mind-boggling all the same. It came out of Phil Collins. We got one version of what he could have produced, but anything coming out of his body would have had to pass his standards and would have been phenomenal all the same. I’m sure of it. What an incredible body of recorded work he must have of the other fills he came up with for this song.

Two things come to mind when I hear this song. The Miami Vice pilot episode scene with Crockett driving through Miami, and Phil's appearance on totp, with a piano and paint pot. Great song, and i think it has the first recorded mainstream use of the 'gated reverb' sound.

Absolutely - was great mood music for Crocket and Tubbs going out to get the bad guys. Crocket was estranged from his wife in the series as well. Phil played in one episode and did a good job.

When "In the Air tonight was released I was picking apples and on the way to work the radio in the car was playing the song and they had it on repeat all day. I always remember because I was going through the end of my marriage . On repeat ALL DAY! It was so significant! That was 30+ years ago I love that song.

Phil is still "the man", but in the early 80's he was "THE MAN". Who knew that Genesis would produce not one, but two of the greatest voices ever to grace the airwaves.

I bought this years ago when it was on Cassette . Could only have been 21 or so . Loved it . One of my all time favs . Years later there i am at 315am rushing into Hospital 30 minutes across Town as the Nurse has called my Sister " he is on his Last breath " . Guess what comes on the radio while the roads are empty and before My Dad died ?

I know exactly how he felt. None of the family around that you were there for and tried to be there for, though work and necessity took you away from. The empty nights filled with far too much time on your hands. The nightmares, worries, fears and regrets, the bottle ever-present, keeping you awake because you’re too afraid to confront the dreams and nightmares of your deepest fears realized. I know one or two creative people like this, where a rainy day or a bad mood can turn into a song. At least he didn't write about his failed marriage specifically, just how it left him feeling. It's funny how the mood which inspired the impromptu creation of this huge hit song just came out of the situation, and that iconic drum fill was just a lucky take, not planned. I guess it helps if one is a prolific genius sitting down to create even when one feels down.

One of my favorite moments in the Gary Numan - Cars interview on this channel, similar to this, is when he admits that the iconic extremely long synth note, with the little kind of step off at the end, happened when he couldn't figure out what to do next, and was just holding the note, thinking. It takes a certain kind of genius to invoke such prolific impromptu moments.

DrQuizzler the synthesizer bit at the end of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer’s hit “Lucky Man” was also a genius stroke from Keith Emerson just fooling around with his new synthesizers. Greg Lake said (Emerson verified) that it was the first time Emerson had heard the song recorded earlier by Lake. The song was too short as recorded by Lake so Lake asked Emerson if he could add anything to it. The synthesizer riff was recorded on the last bit of recording tape they had at the time (they were still unknown musicians recording their first album at the time).

Most, not all , bands from the 70s / 80s could really come up w come good songs. They wrote most of their own material and it came from a phrase, a mood, a feeling etc. Take the eagles for example. Some of their songs came from a guitar riff only that was just a guitar finger exercise warm up. “life in the fast lane” came from the riff Joe Walsh was doodling around w waiting for the other guys to get ready to rehearse. Glenn Frey heard him doing it and once he played it they had a song from it. They were sitting in a bar one night and saw a woman talking to a guy she had met. Glen said she must be cheating because of the way she looked and her eyes were lying. Right then they came up w the song “lying eyes”. Same is true w “sweet child of mine”. Slash was warming up and just made up the famous riff we all know. He said in an interview he wishes he had never played that riff because he hates it. Lol Once music became more about machines than actual live instruments the songs were pretty much written by someone else and bought by the artists. So it has no feeling or emotion from the artists like the songs written from experience like Phil Collins. Chris Stapleton, country artist, has written tons of songs for other artists over the years. He writes them and another artist sings it but that song has no emotional attachment to the singer. There are a lot of reaction videos done by younger folks. Well younger than me about in their mid 20s or so. They react to the 70s, 80, and 90s songs that have actual guitar solos In them. Nearly all of them say they wish songs today had actual musicians w solos and songs written by the band other than what is out today. Music has changed and I don’t even listen to current songs. There just aren’t any that float my boat so to speak.

Shawn Oh, yeah, I completely agree with you on the state of music today; it’s written to conform to a “hit” formula, not from something deep within the artist. I think most chart topping singers today are merely “entertainers”, not really musicians. Many of their “concerts” are in reality, just Las Vegas shows taken on the road.

Absolutely. It's remarkable to think that so often a classic recording of a song just happen to be one of many takes, and when the artist was recording it they would have had no idea that was the moment where something timeless came into being. I'm fascinated by the gestation of songs and the often little things that lift them from the ordinary to the sublime. I love hearing early versions or demos that are included as bonus tracks on albums. Most fascinating is when you hear a song that used to have different lyrics or, say, an entirely different chorus, from the version that became a classic.

In the 90s, I remember it being a tough time in my life. I was adopted, their were alot of days when I thought maybe I was so bad I would be taken away the next day. Nostalgia, I still feel like something bad is on the horizon when I hear this song.
