I've performed with many great musicians over the last 50 years but I'd give my left "funsicle" to share a stage with Leland Sklar, even if only for a few numbers! My first gig as a lead singer was nearly 50 years ago at the tender young age of 15, but man, could I *ever* belt 'em out back then! The lead singer of a band called The Tempests heard me singing along to one of the other bands at the event (grand opening of the Nepean Sportsplex), then explained that she had terrible laryngitis and asked me to fill in for her that night, and voila...my first gig! My first gig as a lead guitarist was 9 years later, and things just kind of "took off" after that. I never "caught a big break" or made it onto any great records, but I played for an awful lot of crowds in Canada and Europe, and had a ton of great times along the way. I could drop a ton of famous names I've shared a stage with, but Leland Sklar? Man, that's some *serious* rock royalty!

Except for the vocoder part behind the vocals. One of the first uses of it.
@That70sGuitarist8 ай бұрын
@@MarkLindell Yes, they used a vocoder, but the vocoder is sequenced from the keyboard player's vocal mic and into the keyboard, all of which was done in a very fitting and effective manner. It serves the song very well, which is a kind of "cardinal rule" among working musicians; "Don't add anything that doesn't serve (or 'enhance') the song." For a great example of "serving the song," I recommend you check out a Guess Who song called "The Key," from their album "Canned Wheat." They used a simple studio trick called "panning" to add greater depth and layers of complexity to an already skull-busting number that runs a little over 11 minutes in length. I recommend listening through headphones to get the greatest possible benefit of what is essentially a simple bit of studio magic, but again, it serves the song *very* well indeed!😉

I’m now almost 70 yrs old and 1st heard an earlier version of it by Phil Collins when I was in my (early?) 20’s. It’s been a favorite of mine ever since then (when I was at a ‘Club Med’ in Paradise Island). It’s an ‘all time’ favorite, along with some done by others (i.e. Purple Rain, Whiter Shade of Pale, etc.) from around the same time period. This is one of those great, classic songs that NEVER gets ‘old’ (as people do - lol)! 👍 to the music we have from the past❗️

What do you admire most about Phil
@elainemeyer5062 Жыл бұрын
@@MarcosBryant-lj8zi I can’t honestly say that I ‘admire’ ANYTHING in particular about Phil Collins (or others who I’d put into this category/genre of music). There are just too many different musicians and songs that have been around for decades, and that I grew up listening to! For certain reasons I even enjoy some more now than I did when they were first released. IMO it’s a combination of multiple, different things that would make me consider a person, band, song, etc. a ‘great classic’, vs having a ‘take it or leave it’ attitude towards them. Hope this answers your question though? *** To use the word ‘admire’, I wouldn’t use it in the same context as you did in your question, but rather in evaluating the overall talent/skill of someone who’s playing/singing I believe is excellent in every aspect. This mindset comes from having been a classically trained pianist and organist since I was 5 yrs old, and being taught a different meaning and understanding of what it is to ‘admire’ an artist.

The best live version of this song by far, and the guitarist is fantastic too 🎸

did u you see the one from 12 years ago. with the blue lights on the stage and the lang beard bass player?. haha sorry didnt know how to tell which one. but to me that one is the best. and its the same guitar player. but if u have seen it and u like this one more...he its all subjective...just maybe i thought u should see it if u havent. anyway. have a good day and this song will never die.

The one from 2004 (I think) is the most epic! My favorite is the one from the “No Jacket Required” HBO Special.
