I just texted my 29 year old, guitar playing son, and said, "Guess who played the guitar on Tarzan"? He replied, "Oh you're kidding". We're both huge Tim Pierce fans. I'm a guitar player and I have seen every Genesis show in LA since Selling England. I met Phil at the Roxy and at Tower Records. My son was 6 when Tarzan came out and it was the only CD in my truck for a year. His Mom passed the next year and "You'll Be In My Heart" was our solace. Tim, it's like you are part of our family. Thanks!

I just want to acknowledge the zen-like humility of Rob Cavallo... you could argue that he made the project a success (from picking the song out of 8, fleshing it out and even saving the sudio session after hours of bad takes)... but all he talks about are the great people around him (crediting the Stones for the influence... giving Phil Collins props on the piano... ) and talking about the good fortune that smiled upon the project. Beautiful.

I'm so glad to hear that Tim is a huge Genesis and Phil Collins fan. These guys catch a lot of shit because they went pop in the 80s, however real musicians and real music fans know that Phil Collins and Genesis are incredible musicians and songwriters. Loved your stories about hearing Phil's drums in person. That is something I've always dreamed of experiencing.

What a charming video this is. I too am an insane Phil and Genesis fan. People have no idea how good these musicians are. Guess why the best hire the best and why the work turns out SO good. It is the collaboration! Sadly it sounds the music industry has move far away from session players and the inspiration revealed here is lost. And who cares? 'Disturbed' cares, hence their amazing cover of S&G 'Sound of Silence'! Listen to it with the idea that music and creativity is being destroyed because it is being silenced for quick profits.

Besides being an excellent musician, being a sober, respected, patient, confident, creative visionary, psychologist, mediator adds to your success. I'm glad Phil was receptive to ideas, didn't fly off the handle or just disappear like some artists do when things get tense. It sounds like the people ingredient is the X factor that makes or breaks the hits. I love your videos Tim. You always smile at the beginning like a kid that learned to play his first song. It seems many artists use somewhat completed songs from songwriters, change a few things and share credit instead of creating from scratch like Phil does.

Always interested to hear these stories. It's fascinating to hear that you would turn down touring with Phil Collins at the height of his fame because the money is so much better as a session musician.
@IndigoJo
@IndigoJo 3 жыл бұрын
Session musicians will often do that. Neil Young had to get another drummer in for his Harvest tour (the original songs for which were released on Time Fades Away) because Kenny Buttrey demanded huge fees to cover the lost Nashville session fees. Some musicians have a totally different group of musicians to tour with than appear on their records (Richard Thompson in the 80s and 90s for example).
