I love that your first episode goes after Chris Horner "of a generation that we know about". Keep on keepin' on Phil.

Current generation of World Tour Pros. Of the last 25 TdF winners in Paris (before getting yellow taken away) only 3 riders have no record of banned PED use. Many legally used with a TUE. 1 of those winners had a teammate using banned PEDs and so benefited while not breaking any rules.

Strava live segments doesn't need cell reception. It just uses the pre synchronised GPS co-ordinates of the segment and the pacing at intervals along it.

Phil, loved your #1 book and love the worstretirementever for the same reason - honesty and bikes. You tell an honest story, with or without 8 seconds or $10 a day, and its about riding bikes. Riding bikes clean. We all get on the same bike and pedal - you tell us what it's like to be a regular guy in the world of elite riders. Thanks.

Strava KOM tip: add your smart phone Strava device and app to your current Garmin (or whatever cycle-computer you use). The margin of error in the devices you use to track time is probably greater than 8 seconds over that time, and one of the devices may get you the KOM when the other doesn't. I don't think it's cheating, it's just a second sampling of the effort. I started doing this to avoid the dreaded KOM attempt that shows you in the woods next to the road when you know the effort would have gained you the KOM, but the segment didn't record.

But the weight of the extra device would cost him over 8 seconds over the course of a 51 minute climb.
@experiment547 жыл бұрын
gamin records at 1 second intervals with a power meter. can be set to record at 1 second intervals without. smart phone records every 3-6seconds. Thats how people get KOMs cause the recording fills in the blank and assumes you were somewhere when you may not have been. Only a garmin with a power meter is legit.

This whole idea is just awesome bro, Im a real fan of pros showing that they aren't cyborgs. Keep them coming, cheers
@conneeps7 жыл бұрын
Enjoy the idea but constructive feedback that will help future episodes; you're telling a story, so set the stage with some context. Where is Palomar? How long is it? Avg gradient? What makes it special/why is it hard/why is it the focus of the episode? I believe I read that you are doing these episodes to help with some future/regular job, so treat the viewer like a regular person who needs the table set before they can enjoy the meal you've made. I personally know how tough Palomar (and any of the other climbs in this series) is and how significant and amazing hitting that time is....so present it in a way that draws the non Strava/non-SoCal native viewer in.
@fathersha0617 жыл бұрын
that's very sensible advice, if you want to have a webseries that goes beyond the incrowd. I'd suggest adding a small animation that shows the climb would be awesome too. Some added features would take this series global, cycling community is huge.

Palomar is a brute. I've only ridden up it as a race (time trial), and only the last 7-8 miles (the part with the switchbacks). I think it was 1985, and I was a junior. Yeah live segments are nice, although not always completely accurate. I have been "ahead" and then wound up actually slower. when I uploaded the ride. But it helps. And what is this plugged into a laptop deal- you don't have bluetooth and auto-uploading? Also, thorfinn keeps following me, then unfollowing me, then following me again on instagram. it's creeping me out.
@kevinative7 жыл бұрын
Wondering why your coach missed the part about charting out the course and setting some timing benchmarks, so you'd have known if you were on pace...., then again strava segments are always subject to GPS inaccuracies, a few meters on the wrong side of start and finish points can make a meaningful difference.

This effort can be done again I'm sure. Taking some of the tips from others below regarding live segment devices etc. should help. But most of all, was that you said that you thought the climb was longer and that you would have paced yourself better. So there's obviously more time you can shave off right there. I'm sure you can *probably* knock about another *40s* or more off the time knowing the climb better. Good job! Oh and another thing, get a shave Hippy!! (less grams!!!! :P )
