Ivey reviewed this hand in his MasterClass and he admitted he didn't know he mucked a winning hand. Quote: "...It was a mistake me not betting a turn. And when you make a mistake like that at that stage of a tournament, you're automatically irritated. And once the ace hit, I realized I lost. I didn't double-check my cards because of that, because I was frustrated I didn't bet the turn. Once the ace hit, I knew I lost the hand in my mind. And I didn't look at my cards. This is an error that people make all the time... ...And I've done this several times. This is just the first time it's ever been caught on TV..." There's more details he covers on this, the chapter of the MasterClass is called The Mental Game.

Yea it’s crazy that he didn’t bet that turn on such a favorable board for 88 in a 3bet pot and the other guy checking twice… sooo face up

So the dealer is now the regional boss of all Texas Card House in Dallas. He told me a few hands later Ivey sat up and asked him "did i have a flush in that one hand?" He said yup. Thats when Ivey straightened up and knocked the cobwebs outta his head and became more serious.

There was a lot invested from the preflop. And then he thought he was rivered after not betting the turn. He thought if he bet the turn, he would have turned his opponent away, this negating that ace on the river.

I did similar to this when a dealer didn’t control the showdown, and there was a main and side pot. Still as much my fault, because I mucked my cards out of frustration and could have had better focus. But the dealer did not ask for the hands to be shown for the side pot first (or at all), as is the usual way.

He stated that he was so upset with himself for not betting the turn that in his mind, he had already lost, so he just mucked when he saw the pair. He knew exactly what was on the board but forgot what was in his hand because he was angry at how he played the hand.
