I love Phil Keaggy, and I can't be the only one who can hear a similarity between the first couple of songs, and The Beatles.

That's the sound he was going for on a couple of albums in the late 1980s.

With guitar skills that are beyond the range of Harrison's: plus vocal range, and writing skill similar to McCartney: it's not hard to think Phil might have drawn from their music, but with so much performed and recorded that is uniquely his own, the Beatles wouldn't be a fair comparison, imho!

Phil, you might be the most underrated musician and song composer in this world, imho, and probably unknown by most people in the music world, but that's their loss. That doesn't matter because what you've done for the Lord will follow you into Heaven. And I've enjoyed your music, as so many other people have, for many years! I think, the first CD I bought was Sunday's Child, and then I proceeded to buy as many of your other CDs as I could, after that. *“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."* - Matthew 6:19-21

There was one song where your voice reminded me of Geddy Lee (Rush), and another of Paul McCartney. What a delightful and versatile voice you’ve been given... not to mention your guitar gifting.

What's Phil doing playing the Eric Johnson riff from Cliffs of Dover?! :-D Just drops in that gem casually. Awesome.
@CiscoDuck
@CiscoDuck 4 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe not so casually, if you know the story. Crimson & Blue sessions producer Lynn Arthur Nichols told me when he & Phil were selecting material for the album he called Phil one night and told him, "Why don't you write a new song based on the chord progression of 'All My Lovin'' (Beatles) with some fresh lyrics... we'll call it, 'Love Divine'. Whaddya think?" So, Phil descended down into his Kegworth studio and wrote the song and came up with a bare bones demo sans the guitar fugue. Phil asked "So, what do we do here?" A couple of days earlier he had been playing around with a stripped down version of Eric Johnson's 'Cliffs of Dover' and Lynn liked it. He suggested Phil insert it as a tip of the hat to Eric, he reasoned, "After all, we've already borrowed a bit from McCartney. Let's double-down and see what happens." After the album came out Phil did a video promo for it for Sparrow Records that was aired on a couple Christian TV new music segments where they sampled a few of the tunes and debuted the 'I Will Be There' music video. After playing a bit of 'Love Divine' he explained the marriage of the two bits, and concluded, "I hope Paul doesn't sue me. Or Eric Johnson for that matter." Check the studio version of the song out here on KZbin. It's GREAT!!

Of course, this is not anywhere near the entire concert. The ending section highlights the one weakness that crops up at times in his concerts: seemingly endless noodling, especially with the delay feature. I have seen audiences check out when he goes down that rabbit hole. When he sticks to songs, even with long instrumental passages, they stay with him.

Phil Keaggy comes from an era where ProgRock was very popular with bands like Yes, Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, The Moody Blues, etc. He enjoyed movie soundtracks as a teenager, along all the popular stuff on the radio. When he goes into that "zone," that's when Phil's unique creativity comes out. Yeah, sometimes, it's like, "Cmon Phil, how long you gonna drag this party out?" I don't think it's ego but that's just Phil being Phil. Not everybody likes that style. If you don't care for extemporaneous jamming & looping, Phil's not the guy for you.

@@ebnphlo I was actually at a Phil Keaggy concert where there was no encore because the audience bolted for the exits when the band left the stage. He was in a bad mood (we were told by other bands that his mood affected his concerts) and he just played endless, pointless solos. He came back two years later with his wife and baby in tow. He was in a good mood and put on a great show. With no long solos.

@@j40bob1 I'd be very disappointed if there weren't any 'long' solos.
