A lot of the first wave of punks were glam fans, particularly of Bowie and Roxy Music. The only other red Gibson Firebird VII I've seen belongs to Marco Pirroni (early punk and later on, Adam Ant's right-hand man) and he has it solely in tribute to Mr. Manzanera.

I love 801 live, only a few concerts, one recording, a 19 year old drummer, the best bass player in the world, Eno and Phil singing Miss Shaperio in perfection. And I could go on and on. But here, he doesn't talk about. Don't get me wrong, this is hands down the best interview I've seen. Such a humble, transparent, interesting etc person. IDK I was hoping to hear something on 801. Roxy VIVA, 801 live, Seconds out -Genesis, my favorite albums.

Phil is easily the most overlooked British guitarist of the last fifty years. I don't ever recall his name in any polls for great guitarists in the 1970s. He is up there with the very best: "Remake/Remodel", "Do The Strand", "Amazonia" is a fabulous reminder of his talent. The withering solo on John Cale's "Gun" beggars belief nearly five decades later. 1975's "Diamond Head" remains an overlooked gem. He is a class act.

I wanted to ask Mr Guitarissimo, Phil's got the BOAC StarCruiser, the bug-eye glasses, the Firebird guitar- did he have a copy of that gun he held from the revolutionary guard whilst in Cuba ?! Love Phil- I found out about Roxy after first listening to Phil's solo Diamond Head! My first Roxy show was at a Community college in the Philadelphia suburbs; It was April,1979, Manifesto tour. After the show, some wag got through the security, and made off with one of Phil's guitars ( NOT the firebird!). As he tried to get away from the security posse, he realized he wasn't going to get away. In a moment of insanity, he threw the guitar to avoid capture, and the guitar landed on a rock, breaking it. Later, it was revealed that guitar was a loner that Phil had borrowed from Graham Gouldman of 10CC ! ( article appeared in Rolling Stone, later that year!)

I never seen a better wind playing instrumentalist than mackay in his heydays.. haunting melodies.. Phil Manzanera,must have one of the coolest names in modern music history.Besides his groundbreaking and tasty inventive axe histrionics with Roxy ,Look on the credits of his solo albums and collaborations. You can map out a who is who of the prime artists that Often changed and shaped the music as they went along.The classic Quiet Sun and Diamond Head records are of course a Main example of that.Very well conducted and excellent interview with personal takes which brought me great insight and context on how Mr Manzenera eventually became the exceptional and original musician he still is today.

Bowie name-checked Roxy Music on the Dinah Shore Show (aired March1976) after performing Stay. Seems he genuinely did hold the band in high esteem. "There's a kind of European wave happening"..."I've got a favourite band and song writer back in England called Roxy Music"..."a character by the name of Bryan Ferry"... "spearheading some of the best music coming out now." Later that year (Sept/Nov), Bowie was in France recording the 'Low' album with Brian Eno.

I can honestly say that "Diamond Head" is my number one desert isle disc. I've had it since it came out, and still listen to it at least 3 times annually. If its original multi-track tapes still exist, it would be wonderful if it could get a deluxe modern remastering some day, and issued on Blu-ray audio. (A guy can dream can't he?)
